What comes after SWG?

I've been playing star wars galaxies for a little over a year, and I like it.  However, having long ago mastered my chosen profession, piloting, changed profession a few times and completed countless quests I found there just isnt anything left in the game for me, hasnt been for a long time just been hanging around for the community.

This isnt an NGE rant, but my guild has gone from 60 members (about 1/2 active) to the core of 5 diehards since the NGE and any new players we recruit seem to disappear althogether within a day or two of gameplay, personally I dont hate the NGE but I did prefer it pre NGE and pre CU.

Star wars galaxies is the only MMORPG I've ever played to any extent, and it is good but now thinking towards a new game I am left to wonder if they all seem to lack lasting content, I mean once the community in SWG started to dwindle there just seemed like there was less and less to do, there's only so many similar quests you can do, and so many times you can go out hunting before it starts to feel a bit tiring.  The remainder of my guild are just agreeing on a game we can all jump over to together, we're all sad to leave the game but all feel the same way.  We play on the bria server, the most populated server, but even that seems sparse lately.

Can anyone suggest a game with lasting content?  I'm currently downloading a trial of dark age of camelot, and we're all thinking dungeons and dragons or Roma Victor when that is released, but preferably we're all after something with a decently mature community, server stability, and a good role play element.

I have tried just about every free trial thats out there. None of them, none of them, can hold my attention for more than 10 minutes. Then i have to force myself to play, just in case I missed somethin. And after I while I realize it sucks and I move on.

I long for a game that had the depth that SWG did.

Best thing you can do if you enjoyed SWG is cancel your account to help accelerate the arrival of SWG2 from another company.

100% agree, something big needs to happen so we can get better service. It doesnt matter to me if they even charged more for it as long as its managed way better than it has been.
If its with SOE though I wouldnt even consider it unless they brought in new producers and managment staff and at least a public apology for their decitful practices, a simple refund for ToOW wont cut it.

DAoC is a quality game - since you're already looking into it, I'm sure you'll find that out for yourself. WoW is lovely and polished and it has servers to cater for all sorts of playing styles - rp/pvp, rp/non-pvp etc - but maybe it's not the best bet for "lasting content". If you're prepared to try another SOE game, EQ2 has plenty to keep you occupied along with a mature and friendly community. If you want to stick with the spaceship/piloting theme and dont care about a ground game, check out EVE.

From current big games most similar would be Dark Age of Camelot. Anarchy Online is not bad either, but it is just "bit" outdated. Ultima Online and Asheron's Call are very outdated. EvE-Online is very complex - but no real role-playing community and no characters. WoW, CoV/CoH, Guild Wars and Lineage 1/2 are simple games for simple minds. (I guess you don't want to play EQ, EQ2, Planetside or Matrix because they are SOE's games).

DAoC's is far from perfect. Game is basically level treadmill until you hit maximal level. After that you will fight against other players in realm vs. realm war. Unfortunately this war is pretty pointless (fight over same fortress day after day). However with Catacombs expansion game is pretty interesting (Catacombs is good adventure game). DAoC also have housing and crafting skills, but these are nothing compared to SWG's cities, houses - and original crafting. Also game character customization is limited (characters clothes are pretty dull and too similar). Many players especially in ToA servers have second account that they are using as buff bot in Realm war (can you say "imbalance”?).

Horizons might sounds interesting game, but it has been running under life support since it's release - they absolutely failed to delivery what they promised. Also company that is currently running Horizons have very shady background (original company did do bankruptcy). Neocron and Shadowbane are under bad management and they haven’t ever been able to release high quality game. Jumpgate is space flying simulation and too small to survive. I don't have first hand experience from Knight Online or The Saga of Ryzoom, but they seem to be "simple minded" games. Project Entropia's subscription model just makes me sick (you need to pay real money from items) and Second Life's graphics are just awful.

From incoming games Dark and Light, Roma Victor and Face of Mankind are made by small company that doesn't seem to have previous experience from MMORPGs. Only Dark and Light might (big might) have long-term survivality. Most interesting incoming games seem to be Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Age of Conan. Both of those games are made by developers who have previous experience from MMORPGs. Only problem is that they are both fantasy games. Only incoming "big" sci-fi game seem to be Star Trek Online - but is far away in future (don't have high hopes from it). Another incoming game that I should mention is Darkfall (it might be next generation sandbox game) and it should enter to closed beta soon. Other incoming games just seem to be carbon copies from current games or developed by too small companies to survive (I might be wrong here).

It seems like that I am currently playing 3 games with couple months periods: CoH/CoV (great action), DAoC (traditional role-playing) and EvE (complexity and freedom). However I must say that I don't play anymore so much that I used to play - my MMORPG addiction is dying fast.

I suggest you try EVE.  If you can get past the complexities of the tutorial, you'll find a deep and engrossing experience.

By all means try eve, but unfortunately eve is too big an undertaking to get hooked on the 14 day free trial IMO.  I personally always wanted to play this game and like it, and I did, for about 4 months.  Sadly in the end I just found myself logging on to switch skill training every few days and found the "deep and engrossing" experience quite lacking.  The funny thing about EVE is that it isn't even a timesink, it is merely a money sink.

And btw, if you don't like full pvp, don't even waste your time with EVE.  The game is really a bore if all you do is carebear around in the safe zones or stick with the pve missions.

Different strokes for different folks daeandor!  I'm sorry you didn't like EVE.  EVE has been even called an "economic simulator in space" and I'll be the first to admit that, that's not everyone's cup of tea.  I guess if you come into EVE expecting to fly around shooting little ships ala Freelancer or Horizons, you'll be dissapointed.

In reality when you are involved in the "engrossing" EVE content, it is a pretty exciting and fun game.  Unfortunately, I found the time in between to be my downfall.

Ok thanks for the info guys, I'm going to cancel my SWG subscription from when it next renews, think I'll give dark age of camelot a go, and a freind is playing Eve so I might join him for that, probably prefer something with a bit of ground based rp but the game seems to be mostly higly recommended.  If neither of these hit the spot, will probably wait for dungeons and dragons.

DAoC is a good game. I played it for 2.5 years from the week it came out. They've added a lot of improvements and content even since the time I left... I'm just sick of elves, dwarves and orcs in general. That's what keeps me away from WoW too.

I need a good sci-fi game. Keeping an eye on the development of two games: Fallen Earth and Huxley. Look 'em up here on site. They look interesting at least.

I'm going back to City of Heroes/City of Villains for a while. I know I'll get bored with it eventually, but it beats SWG at least.

    SWG is dead...

P.S. I still have some friends on DAoC trying to get me back there, so I may end up joining you soon.

I have to agree with the DAOC recommendation.  I truely loved that game except during ToA.  If I hadn't given my account to an old guildy, I would be back there now.  Sadly, I cannot bring myself to grind through the levels and cash farming again when I know that I had multiple level 50's with tons of RPs and tradeskills maxed.  If I could only find that crazy Aussie and beg him for my account back!

SWG was my first MMO, I started right at launch and played nearly every day since.   I was hooked from the start, but of course everything changed on Nov 15th.  Since cancelling, I have tried EQ2, WOW, and COH.   All were extremely boring to me, and unable to hold my attention for more than a couple of days.   It sounds like most games are in this same mold, so Im beginning to think my MMO days are coming to an end.

Roma Victor sounds like an engrossing concept, so I will probably give it a try but I am getting pretty discouraged with the genre.

I know it's getting off topic, but I just tried to EVE 14-day trial.  I quit after 1 day and, really, I don't think I should have to struggle to find the "deep meaning" of a game if I can't stay interested for two hours.

I moved to Daoc. It has an RvR (Realm versus Realm) PvP system that I haven't really gotten in to. There is a direct and visible rewards group based on that system, then the standard AI part of the game and progression.

I don't have any desire to bash NGE either. It wasn't for me and I won't pay for it out of simple brains and common sense. DAOC isn't SWG but it is a game that is in that niche, the one I purchased SWG based on. Replace SWG? No. Just be a game I played and had fun playing.

One of the things I miss is the old SWG interface, and I haven’t found another game where the iu is close enough that I like it. Maybe it time for me to give up on finding an MMO.
