Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin Explains Call of Duty Ghosts' 720p on Xbox One

Im getting the PC version and play it on max settings in 1080p. Its also pathetic that xboxs video card is so weak that of all the things, resolution is what hits performance. Xbox fans cant even hope for the more power hungry visual enhancements for games like Anti-Aliasing and HBAO/SSAO if they cant even get past such a simple thing as resolution.

What did you expect?  The xbox one is basically the equivalent of a $80 video card and the PS3 is the basic equivalent of a $130 vid card when it comes to graphical power.  Any dedicated gaming PC built in the last 2 years will swim circles around either of the new consoles.

COD Ghosts is a joke anyways.  Its still using the same engine they used in cod2.  Heavily modified, yes, but still the same engine.  Lots and lots of things they have to fake, especially with lighting, that games like BF4 do in real time.

On top of that BF4 has HBAO and AA even on PS4

Unsurprisingly, Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts sits at the top of both the PS4 and Xbox One lists, with 298,180 units pre-ordered on PS4 and 329,032 on Xbox One.

You can keep telling your self that if that makes you feel better but many PC gamers and gamers in general who has an eye for graphics from being exposed to the best can easily see the difference between the quality of 720p and 1080p on a large 1080p TV.  This wasnt about the number of sales, if I cared about that than I wouldnt have a PC since that has the lowest sales number compared to the consoles.  And between the consoles sales its not even a big difference for CoD sales.  And I dont find it surprising that Xbox has the most CoD fans, is that suppose to be a good thing? lol

Your not comparing xbox one to pc though your trying to compare xbox one to ps4 and there is just a slight difference you cant tell.  If you put these side by side while playing even your (even though you claim your some video graphic expert) woudl not be able to pick out the difference accuratly 5 out of 10 times.

What im saying is as a PC gamer primarily, its easy to see the difference between 720 and 1080 res on a large 1080p TV because when you play a game with only 720p on a large TV thats made for 1080p, the picture quality is choppier with rugged edges meaning less AA because its stretching the picture out.  You can only see a difference when the TV is very large as in something like 40 inches or more.

Yeah the difference between 720P and 1080P is so very slight.

I mean, 1080P is only more than twice the resolution of 720P.

Really, who can tell accurately tell the difference between 2 things when one of them double the other? Thats like trying to tell the difference between something thats 5 feet tall and something thats 10 feet tall.

The difference between 5 feet and 10 feet is so slight they are practically the same.

Your not comparing true 720 to 1080 so yes your right there is not much of a difference.  The xbox one will be upscaled to 1080 which is why there is not much of a difference.

My concern with the xbox ONE is that if it is having "troubles" with CoD ghosts at release (high graphics wise), how is it going to fair 5 years down the line?  Will they just never be able to offer "next gen graphics" if their graphics now are already lagging behind???

I can guess their marketing strategy.  Come out with the "crappy hardware" now, and release a "new pink system" in 2 years during breast cancer awareness month claiming it has a better graphics card and a portion of the sales go to breast cancer research.  (This is a joke at the "xbox 360 elite" as well as at any company trying to further their item sales by "claiming" that a portion of the price goes to breast cancer".)

How long has xbox 360/ps3 been out?  How long was it until they came out with a new system?  Will the xbox one or even PS4 be able to stand the test of time?  HD tvs came out "a while ago", what is the next "HD tv" "blueray"...what have you?

    -------

I just feel that consoles restrict future innovation by having such "crappy" hardware in comparison to what is actually available...

But I guess "consoles are in development for years" and they can't really just "upgrade the hardware" as soon as something better comes out (before the console is released.)

    -------

I will always be a PC gamer first, you just can't beat relative "total control" over your electronic device like you have over your PC.  (This is comparing the PC to your console.)

I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

What none of you guys are accounting for is the fact that modern TV's have image processing chips in them that do things like de-interlacing, edge enhancements, etc. Thats why a 480p signal on a 1080p TV still looks relatively decent. Whereas on a computer monitor its displaying the exact image sent to it by the video card.  So, displaying a lower res on a monitor vs a TV is a whole different ballgame.

My other major hobby is home theater/AV stuff, they've done double blind studies and found that at normal seating differences over 70% of people couldnt tell the difference between a 720p signal of a movie and a 1080p version.  That only started to change once people got into tv's larger than 60"

What are you smoking?    480p signal on a 1080p TV looks relatively like a pile of shit.   Try watching SD hockey or any sports really.   And some of that is even higher res than 480p and still looks like the aftermath of taco night.   Also, might I add to your 70% statistic, that this is a representation of the overall population.   If you did the same test of 720p to 1080p with gamers, your percentage of those unable to tell the difference would be significantly lower.   My mother can still watch a hockey game in SD and not notice the difference from HD, sure....but this is the same lady who will try to start a Dodge Caravan with keys to a Mazda 3 and wonder why the keys won't work.

Infinity Ward has two systems with nearly identical hardware, and they can't get the XB1 to push 1080p at 60fps, but they can do it with the PS4. Something is wonky on the XB1. It is using resources somewhere that could be used on games or Microsoft's libraries provided to the developers are wasting cycles someplace.

It's a difference, it's real and there's no good explanation for it except that the XB1 can't push the same number of pixels as the PS4 in a demanding game. That means later, when the games get really demanding, the XB1 is going to fall farther behind unless Microsoft fixes whatever is wrong with the XB1. Of course, for that to happen, they have to actually identify what's wrong with the XB1 and what's preventing the XB1 hardware from performing on par with the PS4.

    **

Yes, I know about the esram thing, but right now that's unverified. It could very well be the reason. If it is though, it means that the developers aren't going to code around it. The solution will have to come from Microsoft.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

BF4 does NOT look better on the Xbox One. That's a ploy to make up for the lack of graphical prowess that they are trying to hide from you with their over saturation of the image to make shadow and textures seem 'deep' but in reality they are totally messing with the colour and shading accuracy that the engine itself is trying to portray. It might look cool at a quick glance but you lose all the details and shading when you look at someone who is in the shade etc.

Look at this video as an example of what I mean. In the sequence here you lose all detail on your soldiers arm/gun and also on Dunns face and gear because they messed with things they shouldn't have.

It also completely lacks Ambient Occlusion and has worse Aliasing thanks to it being 720p as oppose to 900p on the PS4.

That's funny because no dev has stated its because of the ESRAM. When I see a DEV come out and state it then I'll believe it. Still BF4 looks better on the X1 please explain that?

I dont know where your getting BF4 looks better on the XB1 since every comparison video I seen it shows it doesnt. Like this for example

    http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/10/28/battlefield-4-xbox-oneps4-graphics-comparison

The edges are slightly smoother on PS4 version especially on multiplayer

And even if you were true, the fact is the PS4 still has the superior graphics card and its on the developers for not having optimized as well as it could have.  And it also means in the long run as both consoles life starts getting older there will be more significant differences in the games graphics as developers learn more on optimizing the games on the consoles hardware.  The most differences will be shown on particularly the exclusives than the multi-platform games just as if you compare the graphical quality of the exclusives on the current gen consoles.  Look at PS3 exclusives like MGS4, The Last of US, Beyond Two Souls, Uncharted, God of War 3 compared to the exclusives of the 360, they cant even touch those graphics.

Nintendo can't touch those graphics either, yet their first party games can sell just as well. Honestly, if you're a pc gamer then why are you so upset about all of this, it should be of no consequence to you. You're coming off as a PS4 fanboy that's trying to hide behind the curtain  of being a pc gamer.

Lastly, aesthetics are FAR more important than graphics and are entirely subjective. I'd rather look at a low res work of art than I would a 1080p pile of crap. Compare Ocarina of Time to something like Kingdoms of Amalur, whose graphics are far superior, but it's aesthetics pale in comparison, among other things.

The PS4 has DDR5 memory, where the Xbone has DDR3, there might be a real difference.

There is the reason why many games will be capped at 720P, its because of its ESRAM.

That's funny because no dev has stated its because of the ESRAM. When I see a DEV come out and state it then I'll believe it. Still BF4 looks better on the X1 please explain that?

Because since the new consoles have made step toward more of a PC architecture I have become more interested in them.  And as a graphic whore I like to talk about these things regardless of platform.

Not smoking anything.  The study was done across all age ranges.  Yes, you are correct that people who are enthusiasts will know what to look for and are going to be far more apt to notice.

480p does not look like a pile of shit, you're the one smoking things if you think that. It doesnt look great, but its more than serviceable. Thats like saying that Alison Brie is 1080p and Gilian Jacobs is 480p and that Gilian Jacobs looks like shit.  No, she is still quite attractive, she just isnt Alison Brie.

Of course then again you could be one of those people that can't differentiate between art style and actual graphical quality.

Out of curiosity, were you around during the "bit wars"? I still remember these exact same fights over Nes vs Genesis. Genesis was 16 bit so it had better graphics than the "inferior" 8 bit Nes, that was the argument back then.

Nes beat Genesis, Gameboy beat Gamegear, N64 beat Saturn,  Gamecube beat Dreamcast. Nintendo consoles were consistently weaker than their Sega counterparts, but they never failed to out sale them.

Xbox 360 and PS3 sales both sit around the 78 million mark, both have failed to out sale the other and I highly doubt this generation will be any different since the established fanbase of each console has become so dedicated and entrenched.

Slightly unrelated side note, I always liked Sega more than Nintendo.

The internal specs of the 2 systems aren't that much off. Sure the ps4 has slightly better specs. The issue here is the company is workign with new tech for the new systems and the tech they have works better on the ps4 then the xbox one. This will change as they get used to working with the new systems

i read the story and while i have no preferance of system. i want both someday, the fact is this is a software issue not a tech issue for the xbox one. its more about how the game works on each system based on the tech the game maker used then it is about the tech in the systems.

Seems to me they are running at a lower rate on xbox one due to the fact there own tech doesn't work as well with the xbox one as it does the ps4

Before I moved on to PC gaming I grew up on snes and genesis.  But back than I was unaware of any bit wars or any kind of fanboy wars, which probably was a good thing.  And I liked Nintendo more than Sega because it had more rpgs like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger.  Also the thing with nintendo was that they had a special chip for 3d graphics which was used for Mario RPG and starfox

You didn't miss out on much, fanboys back then were the same as they are now. You need to understand one thing though, Genesis does what Nintendon't with blast processing and  the Sega CD, its not like I was going to wait for Nintendo to make one.
