Definitely StarCraft. Even though I don't play it too much anymore (More Civilzation IV), it was my first computer or video game, and was simply awesome. Everything from LAN parties to beating the game (Without cheats it took a while...) on single player, to Use Map Settings with the original Turret D's and Zone Control, very fun. And you can see the effect it had on the gaming world, almost eight years later we still use terms such as 'the Zerg' and more recently in a Game magazine (Computer Gamer mabye?) a group was referred to as 'protoss-like' for their powerful units but high mineral consumtion. Really I don't think any game has had such an effect on the gaming world.
iv only played ages of empires I, II, and III and warcraft II battle.net and warcraft III frozen throne, id have to say it goes like this AOEIII-->WCII-->WCIII-->AOEII-->AOEI

If you thought WarCraft II was better than WarCraft III, you MUST, imediately, get StarCraft. It has, and improves greatly, on all the things that made WarCraft II good, while having none of the stuff that made WarCraft III, well, not crap, but not as good.
was never a big fan of starcraft for some reason i played Wc2 and then got Wc3 and the expansion and have been playing for an extended period of time and for xmas im getting the new age of empires... so i think thatll be really something and Civ 4 looked really interesting ... not as military based as age of empires but still a very good rts as from what i hear

Anyone who tells you civ 4 is a rts is either a retard or doesn't know what rts stands for Any game you have to hit enter to end your turn can't really be real time
IMO panzer general 1 was the best tbs and starcraft was the best rts.
Imo (let me emphasize that imo) warcraft 3 TFT is the best current strategy game, when you don't consider time of release. If I consider time of release, the C&C has got to be the best strategy game, or in my opinion, the most revolutionary game ever(that and dune 2)

You mean someone actually wants to vote for it? Sorry, no. C&C is fun in its cheesy way, but it gets completely owned by either <*>Craft or Total Annihilation.
The whole Panzer General series was great tbs also as mentioned, including Star General and Fantasy General.
A game I am currently playing on Gametap is Empire Earth, a very good rts strategy. Play it on hard setting. It also has some preset historical campaigns that are a lot of fun.
This thread should be in "Off topic discussion" though, since its not MMOG related.

IMO, Star General is one of the top 5 worst games ever produced. I never played Fantasy General because Star General was so bad.
Civ games are great. Of the RTS games AOEII+expansion was my favorite. Currently I am playing AOEIII but it doesn't have the depth of AOEII, maybe with an expansion it will be better.
I would concede that Star General was rather simple, but the soundtrack was damn cool.

Starcraft (though the others are good too). I stopped playing Warcraft after the 2nd one, Age of Empires was great but gets old, and Civilization takes too long to play.
I periodically find myself going back to Starcraft which is something I don't do with those other games. Though I wouldn't mind playing Warcraft or Warcraft 2 again

Nope, sorry. Warcraft III was not improved by the introduction of the "hero" system, and the other adjustments made to ensure that the game would revolve almost solely around the hero. C&C suffered badly from its simplistic base design and no-defense doomsday weapons. StarCraft is still the best there is.
Warhammer 40k :Dawn of War. Everything else just feels like a ripoff of the same old crap with spiffy new graphics. Cossacks was pretty fun back in the day also.
