Isn't this supposed to be a Role Playing Game?

I do not think this will go against any NDA...

I am in this stress test and I have not seen or heard any Role Playing going on so far, with only two days left in this stress test.  isn't DnD supposed to be an RPG?  I will admit that I have not done much with grouping,  (I have been testing out the different professions so far)  but the areas I have been in have had no RPing.  I take that back, I did once hear someone thank the bartender for what ever he got.

Everyone keeps comparing it to PnP DnD to support their reason why it is going to be a good/great game.  So why no RPing?  Unless most of you did not do any RPing when you played the PnP game.  That is why I started playing DnD many years ago.  Heck, WoW has more RPing then DDO has.

I am just a little frustrated about this is all.  Anyone got any opinions?

Usually in short duration stress tests, like this one, people are simply to busy trying things out.

    Well, a few things:

    1) People want to see how the game is right now given the limited time frame available to play it. Role playing isn't exactly supported by in-game mechanics so there's no reason to really do it unless you like saying "thee" and "thou"

    2) Combat is fast-paced and real-time which means it's easier for most people to say "incoming" or "inc" rather than "Hark! Monsters approach. Brace thyselves for combat."

    3) People say DDO is going to be a great game for many reasons. Quest-only XP. Constant grouping. Hand-crafted dungeons. Similarity to the PnP ruleset. I don't recall any of them revolving around the ability to RP (which honestly can be done just as well, if not better, in other MMOs)

    4) Look at the responses you give to an NPC if you want to take a quest. For example, there's a conman who sells to kobolds who needs your help with a deal gone bad. The only reason to refuse it is if you want to roleplay a goody-two shoes, but that just keeps you from joining a group for a quest. There's no reward in refusing even if you're a Lawful Good Paladin. Basically, I'm trying to re-iterate: THERE'S NO IN-GAME SUPPORT FOR ROLEPLAYING.

From my knowledge of myself playing this game quite a lot, Roleplaying does go on in groups once you pass through the gates to the main area of Stormreach.  I think by Role Play, Turbine were assuming that when youdo quests you have a D20 and a DM to set you in the D&D RP mood.  I personally find that this only works on some quests.  If you're in beta then you may agree with me that once you get into the game and start doing group quests or you just hang out in the taverns, RP will occur.

A big part of the D&D community rather roll play then roleplay.

What is nice with D&D, you can do both, roll play and roleplay.  Or you can just do whichever you prefer.  It was always the player choice in the end.

Most computers games focus on the roll play however, there is nothing wrong there, the medium advantages has to be taken into account, roll play on a computer are easily accomplished.  Adding facultative roleplaying is great, but the key point is...nobody has to do any role play if they are just in the mood of killing everything. image

A paladin should work hard to maintain his paladin status, otherwise it is incredibly flawed.  Code behavior was enforced in most D&D products, I expect a MMO to be ahead of old games, not trying to catch on them.  Paladins need to be thrown a Warrior status without the feats for already earned level when they lose their paladin-hood, they should not be allowed to earn anymore paladin levels if they earns 1 warrior level unless they are part of a specialized paladin order that usually allow to take warriors levels.

I have to agree that the npc's and such don't really encourage roleplay. I expected a bit better then that. But when the game goes retail it'll probably be better since a lot if not most of the people WANT to roleplay. Stress test was just to short for it. :P

Of course Turbine will not provide tools to the community to roleplay.  It's Turbine!  They don't care what their players think or want, well except if it's gonna bring in lots of money.  Look at how they treated their players with Asheron's Call 2.  Thank you for buying the expansion pack, oh by they way, we're shutting down the servers soon.

Anyway, given my nature, I will give Turbine an other chance, mainly because I love DnD so much. I just hope they don't mess up with the franchise!

they did say they will make a roleplay server AND enforce the roleplay rules on it. At least it's something...(well...codemasters will...not sure about turbine)
