It is great and awesome, but i can't play it anymore, i'm sick and tired of it. Most players are, they better lauch some epic expansion if they want to keep their falling apart reputation.
Debated millions of times already but i can sum it up very easily.
Wow is the best ever entry level game for new gamer's.It was easy to grasp, easy to play and hand holding made it even easier.I came from FFXI which was out sooner and boy was i shocked at the ease of game play.I Actually felt ashamed to be in WOW,being an older gamer,i felt like Wow was some kids hangout.
During my time in FFXI leading up to the release of Wow,i had to think a LOT,absolutely no hand holding and still a couple years later there was lots of unknown, lots to learn about my own player let alone the game.As soon as i jumped into FFXI,i was like man this is what i want,a challenging game with tons of unknown entities.
I had a chance to play about 3 weeks of EQ2 before buying Wow,so i had a somewhat already telling of what Wow was going to be like because soon i stepped into Wow it was identical but only looked to be done cheaper and with uglier graphics. My immediate feeling, knowing little of Blizzard at that time, was no way in hell would anyone choose Wow over EQ2.My theory was two identical games but one being EQ2 was on a much higher scale.
I learned right then the power Blizzard had over marketing and the gaming crowd in general,i have no idea what they did, perhaps it stemmed long before with their gaming platform and a large following.I personally was always on the search for that next high quality game,i was buying anything and everything, from early days of Wolfenstein>Doom>Quake>Unreal and tons of other stuff like Might N Magic -Wizardry-Ultima ect ect.All that time i was an avid gamer and thought i knew everything about gaming,i still was stunned at how little i knew about Blizzard's power because everything i saw from them,i scoffed at the low quality.
This next paragaph is key to how i see Blizzard as a developer.
To this day Wow is not alone when comes to Blizzard, from my perspective,i see nothing but low quality games all the time from them. However the one thing Blizzard has managed to not do is piss me off,so i will always keep them in mind now when looking for new games.I have nothing bad to say about them as a business,i just don't praise their games like so many others do.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
WoW could be good/best mmo ever If blizzard didn't fucked it so hard and make the end-game so easy and gear is too cheap to get. I miss vanila/bc when you had to farm for rank 14 in pvp so long, same goes for gear etc. Now all those casual scrubs who couldn't sit 24/7 at pc cried and blizzard prefered more money instead of a better game.
Lol if that's the tl;dr. I thought vets prefered wow pre bc for the lack of flying mounts and BG's. Now, there's so many bg's that for pvpers, wow looks more like a battlefield fantasy game.
IMO, yes, and I have played most major MMORPGS since Merdian 59 beta. Nothing beats Vanilla WoW, and that is why it was so successful, for so many years.

Who here hasn't beta'd for Merdian, UO, and EQ?
Now, if you would have claimed Simple Simon, well, then I'd be impressed.

It is likely we'll never see s subscription based MMORPG ever reach the level of popularity that WOW did.
Sure, there's larger games out there, but nothing will likely rival the commercial success that Blizzard achieved with WOW, and even Blizzard will likely find it challenging to surpass its success.
Is it the best MMORPG ever? Depends on your preferences I suppose, me I think EVE holds that title, but it certainly is one of the giants of the genre and you can't really deny it's a great MMO, (if you are being honest with yourself) even if you don't personally care for it.
The funny thing about this is that every time we see a major Theme Park (AAA) MMO release. It generally sells "X" million boxes at launch. Meaning, there is a market for a replacement, but the problem has been making an epic one.
As much as i hate this game right now, i gotta say WoW was the best game i've ever played since the beginning of my gaming career in late 80's. Obviously, that lasted only to the end on 2010 when ICC came along with the worst nightmare among all the features ever invented in the history of MMOs: Cross Realm Dungeon Finder..
So yes, WoW was by far the best MMO i've ever played.

So someone who doesn't sit playing video games 24/7 is a scrub?

WoW's endgame raids are harder than ever, and harder than any other MMO on the market. WoW does have some of the easiest endgame on the market, but its endgame also contains the hardest content on the market. You dont get to blanket call its endgame "easy" to suit your view. By that logic, I say WoW is the hardest MMO there is.
For all of the flaws that WoW corrently has, easy endgame isn't one of them lol.

it's a bit of an oxymoron, a game in it's own section enquiring 'best mmo ever?'. But of course every passing multi-mmorpg-devourer will muse this.

Me. I was playing something else for that entire period.
