Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Servers will be down till next week.

This is what I read at the official forums:

http://www.darkandlight.net/forums/showthread.php?p=819667#post819667

Apparently there's been attacks on the server and they feel it's in their best interest to keep the servers offline for now.

I think it's in their best interest too. Imagine if someone stole their code?

I just wonder who's hacking and why. Is it someone trying to steal passwords? Steal code? Create new accounts? Or just some jerks angry that they didn't get a free key and are causing trouble?

Hey, at least they're communicating with us! I don't mind so much when I know why; it's the downtime where we're kept in the dark that bugs me.

They call those who hit "Ok" and "Login" in rapid succession "hackers" ::::12::

Well I'm guilty as charged then :) I continually hit "OK" when I'm the max connections loop, until I either connect or get bored.

But I don't think that's it. Read the new community headline on the main page. There's something else going on, and I think it has to do with disgruntled jerks.

Does anyone actually beleive anything Farlan said anymore?  A couple of days ago they blamed their problems on the users computers and yesterday they blame it on hackers.  Today they close down the server.  One thing about Farlan is they are consistent.  They never admit their mistakes.

But the big question is will the server ever come back up again?  Is this the last we have seen of SoG/DnL?  How long are they going to play this hacker excuse?

While I didn't expect this game to fold up shop and close down until February or March  they might be effectively closing down now with a formal announcement a few months down the road.   Even if they are able to keep the game afloat it would seem to be a good idea to close down SoG for a few months to make it more playable.  The lack of stability and content is not making them any new fans.  Better to close it down and wait till they have a better product.  At this dev teams rate of production it could take years before we see any signigant improvement.  If they stay down much longer than the 29th its probably very likely they are down for good.  I can't wait to see who they blame when they announce they are closing the game.

Looking at Farlans track record of deception we have a pretty good idea that this hacker thing has been made up.  The questionwe should ask is this the last we have seen of DnL/SoG?

I believe them because I haven't heard enough from them yet to have reason to disbelieve them.

And I can definitely believe that people in this community would want to crash the login servers. I'm not talking about innocent excessive clicking of "OK" either although I'm sure that's part of it. I'm talking denial-of-service. I'm talking disgruntled jerks who just want to screw over Farlan.

I can surely believe, therefore I think they're telling the truth.

These are the same people that have been lying to us for 5 years.  The same people that admanatly promised us this game would release in the year 2002.  The same people that promised us SoG would be a playabale game.  The same people that refuse to communicate with their playerbase.  The same people that released a laggy SoG on the 12th then suddenly a day later put in a limit on the server.   The same people that denied there was a limit on the servers then a few days later admitted there was one.  The same people that sold us a unplayable game devoid of any content for a premuim price of $60.

There are lots of excellent threads documenting Farlan's inability to tell the truth.  I don't think they are compulsive liars but rather practical liars that will say whatever they need to say to advoid taking blame for their own incompetence.

First its our fault the game is unstable as Farlan said the players computers are not good enough to play their game.   Now its the mysterious evil boogy man hackers, Hah.  Will it be the terrorists next or will it be the space aliens ate our bugfix code.  Farlan has shown us nothing except a consistent inability to tell us the truth.   There is absolutely no reason to believe that overnight they have become honest and trustworthy and this time are telling the truth.

To believe that disgruntled gamers somehow got upset and either in an organized or purely random fashion started hacking SoG's login server is well amazing.  Not only would it be amazing that they had the sophistication, skill  and know how to hack into a multi millon dollar game but they are contending they did this immediately as soon as the game was released with no time to even prepare such an attack.  If these hackers are this good they should fire the dev team and hire these guys.  They sound a 1000 times more competent.  But back to reality its better to buy a lottery ticket than believe in this magic bullet theory of Farlan's.

The only legitemate question we should be asking is will the servers ever come back up again?  Is this the death of SoG/DnL or will they postpone the closure of this game for a few more months.

Hackers or whatever anyone wants to believe as the truth won't really matter if the servers come back up and are not stable, contents lacking, bug list is lengthy. Either way they've managed to buy themselves some time again and only time will tell.

Of course you don't, but it's not an impossibility.

None would neither want to hear the truth, of course you want the truth, but you would not want to hear from the company of a game you have longed for years, that they simply cannot handle the servers correctly.

Whatever they have said is either true, or to shelter their reputation out there. Whatever the gibberish, it's what will show up next that matters.

    It happens

    City of Heroes hacked

The Cities of Heroes and Villains suffered at the hands of a master criminal* last night.

The miscreant got several servers shut down and managed to pimp his own website through the admin broadcast channel. Players were also randomly kicked from other servers.

NCsoft and Cryptic have said the issue is now fixed, which makes it seem as though this was lax password security rather than a network issue.

"We are aware and are resolving the issue. No account information is in jeopardy," said an official forum post. "The issue is now completely resolved. Customer data and its security was not compromised in any way during the incident that occurred."

*Did I say master criminal? Typo sorry, I meant masturbator.

Yes, there has been some MMORPG that has been hacked into.
No, it didn't take them over 2 weeks to fix.
(Notice they have stated that they have been under attack SINCE the Server started!)

When the server farm opened, we had massive attacks from all kinds of hackers. These attacks locked and saturated the login servers.
    http://www.darkandlight.net/article.php3?id_article=1600

Most companies are usually fixed in hours if they are actually attacked.
I remember the 1st Hack Attack in SB and it was fixed faster than Farlan is working and SB sucked!

    Just think about it.
This is suppose to be a GIFT to the LOYAL fanbase.
They can't competently fix issues like this now during this trial and fanbois expect they will miraculously be able to do any expedient work during a release version?!?!

Quite interesting that right AFTER a scheduled 2 day downtime (right before the Xmas weekend) that they decide to state it was all due to HACKERS.
I have a feeling no one is really working on the Servers now and they are just celebrating the holidays.

Just read between the lines of this post from them:

In order to make these tests a priority, prevent more attacks, and to bring SoG back online as soon as possible, we have decided to shut the servers down until Thursday, December 29th.
    http://www.darkandlight.net/article.php3?id_article=1605

In order for us to take advantage of our fanbase even more, we have decided to take the Holiday Off and not work on the server and blame hackers for it.
We have had the Server down 90% of the time anyway since we started SoG so you shouldn't miss it much and it should be the norm for you all.
We could have fixed the issues during the 2 day downtime but the Devs was already boarding the plane to meet with their families abroad.
    Thank you Suckers of Ganareth!

Don't even get me started on whatever they are talking about when they mentioned "Pirates" in this post.

The main issue regarding the acces to SoG is the game login base. If the access delay is too long, the client is disconnected from the server upon connection. This was the case when there were too many requests at the same time, especially from pirates interested in new things!

I would have posted more of this in the D&L forums but they banned my IP from viewing the Forums.

  • I think its good, they should keep the servers down until they've resolved the hacking issue. If it takes a couple days, so what, we aren't all that addicted aren't we (except the flamers seem to, otherwise they wouldn't be behaving like they do).

I don't mind that they took it down... let them enjoy their Christmas and then start again next wek trying to fix everything.  I was able to get in and the game was much better (i.e. less bugs, smoother. fewer crashes) only thing is the server.  If they can fix the server this game's hype would shoot up again.

About the hackers, I deduced in IRC that the hackers and all the people bypassing the launcher (through 3rd party launchers, XML editting, and command line) AND all the sites that ping the server.  It was probably too much and NP3 thought everyone was DOSing them.  I believe I am 100% right but we will see with further announcements.

If this is what it takes to get the servers up and running so be it.

When the server came up one Thursday the game was working fine for 30mins EVERYONE could login without any problems..

30mins into the game the login servers crashed and the same problems began it could well be hackers why not?

They have done it to other MMORPG so im sure as hell they would try it with this one too.

That sounds more like database issues to me. Works fine till it gets a query overload. All the lag reported when around a lot of players also gives indicatrions of poor databese code also. They are probably using open source code like MySQL, cost wise it is effective but performance wise it sucks for a MMOPRG application.

Why would anyone steal their code? It would be like stealing a bum's cardboard box.

Hmmm, ironically...someone hacked their system, and is trying to steal their stolen code? Maybe now NP3 knows how it feels to have someone steal their hard work.

Maybe Santa hacked in and stole their code, and is going to give it back to them on Christmas fixed, lol. image
