Why do sci-fi mmo's have mailboxes?

...like Anarchy Online and SWTOR?

It's like we have all this cool technology and amazing stuff, but we don't have email?

/scratching head

Is this an example of lack of thinking outside the box? Though at least AO was a pretty unique game at launch and still is, and SWTOR is not a bad game, Imo.

Edit: lol I wrote SWG meant SWTOR, sorry x)

    SWG didnt have mailboxes

I think whats more depressing is the crafting in TSW. Modern day mmo where you farm metal scraps off mobs and drag n drop into a box. Out pops an ak47 wtf fail.

Simply because they didn't think to call the mailbox a 3d printer instead?

Or more likely so that people immediately understood what it was and what it was for.

AO mail and market were add a couples years are mail/market became standart in MMO, they had to adapt the idea to the game dated tecnology.

It was so fun to search for item on AO market travel for 20 minutes, get to the city and the search the several stores just to find out that the item was already sold...the memories.

It's also a bit bloody silly having mailboxes in high fantasy (yawn) mmo's where magic is so prevalent.  Or having to return to quest givers, why not have a crystal ball or magic bauble of phone calls?

No because I can get a textmessage on my cellphone that I can carry around, while people thousands of years into the future or in a galaxy far far away have to travel to a mailbox, that means our time is more advanced than theirs...?

i can forgive AO because i think it was the first sci-fi mmorpg launched in it's day, but SWTOR? it's not that old?

It's largely for game design reasons, when it is there.

There is an argument one can make for intentionally leaving inconvenient things in an MMO. Things like banks, taverns, class trainers, mailboxes, all get people to cross paths, and that sometimes leads to socializing, which sometimes leads to friends and a feeling of a living world, which get people to stay and play longer even if they are bored of the gameplay.

There are BOOKS written about shit like this.

    Also SWG didn't have mailboxes.

It's sort of tough to receive non-electronic goods on a smartphone or tablet... although, I suppose, hand-held transmorgrifyers are probably just around the corner... coming right after the flying car.

Does it really matter when we are playing a game??

Why does Archeage have discos and automobiles?  Does it really matter?

The quick question is, does it break your immersion? Fine , play something else.  For me that crap in Archage does break my immersion and I won't play it.

If not then ignore it , it is just a game.  Simple as that.

Ignoring the impossible task of travelling faster than light, as well as the fact they can destroy planets; the rest of the technology in the far away galaxy is strangely reminiscent of WW2 dogfights and C17th swashbuckling.  I think we are more advanced in many ways.

Most sci-fi MMOs don't have mailboxes.

Why do fantasy MMO's have mailboxes?  The concept of a post office didn't exactly exist until the last few hundred years.  If you wanted a message delivered to someone, you hired a messenger to track them down, or send a pigeon or hawk.  The ability to reliably deliver actual products or objects (not just messages) was sort of limited to the very wealthy.

Has OP ever played SWG?  I am just going to read SWTOR instead.

In SWG you had an email type system, if you needed to get items to people you either traded with them or used a vendor, so no 3d printer either.

Sorry you're right, I wrote the wrong abbreviation, I meant SWTOR.

the system in SWG made more sense then.

Because most sci-fi MMOs are just re-skinned fantasy MMOs.

Because mail/e-mail will always remain a perfectly viable form of communication for unattended messages between human beings

I mean did mobile phone replaced mail/e-mail? Lol

How much email do you receive in your mailbox? And what does it look like? Do you get a ziploc of 1s and 0s or a sheet of UUEncoded jibberish that you have to manually type into your computer?

Yea but mail and email are picked up and delivered in quite a different way.

The reason I asked  was actually because I was logging on to some old characters in SWTOR, and they all had gotten a mail from the gamecompany about some resetting of some pvp ratings or points or whatever.

So all the characters had new mail icon going, but I had to travel on my sci-fi hovering vehicle to a mailbox to see what the message was. There was no items or money sent, just a simple message. It seemed kindof silly.

    Bumping the answer.

Actually I think this one is the answer.

Having mailboxes for messages makes sense in a medieval setting, but using mailboxes as a message system in sci-fi makes no sense to me.

don't get me wrong, I'm not against mailboxes in any setting - you can use them for items, but it makes no sense for messages without attachements in sci-fi.
