[Preview] Diablo 3: The New & Improved D3

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion is set to hit live service sometime in March. The Friends & Family closed beta has expanded to include more players. We were lucky enough to score a spot and have some first impressions to share. See what we think of the "new and improved" Diablo 3, now with radiant action, and then leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Ah, gear...the Diablo player's fondest desire. Blizzard has done well with allowing players to feel a sense of "WHOOT!" again when even the most ordinary yellow drops are tons better than what you already have. My monk, for instance, was well-geared in the Inna's set with tons of resistances, high damage weapons, great life on hit, etc. Within about a half hour, I'd taken all of that off and replaced it with yellow gear I found in Reaper. Re-dressing your companions is essential too and, as with my own gear, simple.

The only thing that makes me want to try out the new xpac is the new class.  I've played to max level all the previous classes and they are boring to me.  Even if we needed to use or think of new 'strategies' and use different skills, there just aren't enough to make me want to go back to playing my Mage or Demon Hunter, because there just aren't any better skills in the game nor enough skills to make up for the deficit.

Can't wait for this. It fixes everything in a very good fashion except the always-online DRM unfortunately.

As the ever annoying templar would say; GLORIOUS!!

    What about Xbox One?!?

Can you guys please poke someone at Blizzard on this?

Diablo 3 was fun, I got my Monk to 60 and cleared through Inferno. Maybe Paragon level 5? I saw no reason to keep playing (grind) with RoS so close.

Crusader is MY class - I love playing Paladin / Knight types, never been a fan of the Barbarian types.

Removal of auction house, better/smarter loot drops, and of course adventure mode/bounties and rifts...

I have this wild hope they'll allow PS4/XB1 to somehow connect to Battle.net and import characters, but if not I'm definitely buying this one when it comes out on XB1 and rolling a Crusader.

If for some odd/damned reason they only release on PS4 (which would be stupid as the game sold really well on Xbox 360 too) I'll still happily be buying RoS on PC.

Also everyone I know and most sites always say (and seem to forget) that Diablo 2 was kind of "meh" before the xpac so...

Hope they are planning more D3 expansions for the next few years.

Did they fix the boring gameplay? having 0 real choices on how your char advances? Because they were 2 major issues why I disliked the game so much. I found d3 boring, because it felt like an onrails shooter to me, since I had bascally 0 say in what skills i got as I leveled up. Games like torchlight, d2, path of exile all allow you freedom in what you choose. I doubt i'll buy the expansion unless these issues are fixed. d3 never really has impressed me or invoked any "this game is good"-type feelings from me.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

Maybe, but base d2 was far better than base d3. and I think even the xpac for d3 still won't make it equil to the base diablo 2 game. I like choices that matter, and d3 just has none in terms of character.

Wait.... I have to purchase an expansion to fix Diablo 3's obvious mistakes? So discounting all the "corrections" is there enough content in this expansion to even it call it one? One new class and adventure mode, is that it for this expansion? Am I missing a deluge of content, why in seven hells would I give Blizzard money to fix their mistakes, not just mistakes but clear greed in designing the entire game around the RMAH? Really .... why should I purchase an expansion to fix the game?

While the base skills are the same, it will no longer be a cookie cutter type build for every class. There's a lot of viable different combinations now.

Still, those who hate D3 for whatever reason probably won't like this either because of inherent bias. Oh well. :P

If they remove the auction house, I don't think you need the expansion pack to see its removed for base pack purchasers.

I kinda want the expansion but there are so many changes coming it puts me off playing the game right now.

And Im in a gaming desert where there are no games!

  • GravargGravarg Member UncommonPosts: 3,424

I got to play it and I have to say it feels like a Diablo game.  When it first launched I had to tell people that it was a decent enough game, and I had fun with it, but you have to think of it as something different, not Diablo.

Just speculating, but they're closing the AH on March 18th...that's first quarter...of 2014...;) ;)

I've NEVER understood the argument that there is zero skill choice / character advancement in Diablo 3.

Yeah, there are cookie cutter builds for classes, but they are not required by any means and you can really experiment with crazy fun combinations and builds that are unique and quite effective.

Skill choice, skill runes, passives... I've NEVER felt Diablo 3 was lacking in character spec-building. You could take the exact same skills and passives and just by swapping runes have an entirely different play style.

My only real beef(s) with Diablo 3 pre-RoS are: getting gear sucks, AH or bust (which is being fixed) and I know the new system works as it was great fun on Xbox 360.

and #2 grinding through the story, which is also getting fixed thanks to Adventure Mode.

maybe #3 no Paladin class - also fixed w/ Crusader.

Inherent bias? they fixed jack shit in the expansion by the looks of your write-up, I guess it's your inherent bias that makes you think this is a good expansion and a good game. They added HP and damage to the bosses, gave new gear some more +hp, +dmg and whatever stats have you. Your old gear doesn't work, as it's out of date, no wonder the game is "hard", you don't have the GEAR to kill them. [mod edit]

You should never say d3 has been the king of the ARPG, it's been a failure [mod edit]

The gameplay was absolute crap, [mod edit]

New generation gamers, gotta love 'em. If there's no-one holding your hand, it's total crap.

The game takes a lot of skill, Tommymannen. Don't think it doesn't. There's so much more strategy involved in fighting monsters than before. It goes way beyond HP and damage.

Honestly, I never said that D3 is the, how did you put it? "The King of the ARPG". I started internet gaming with the original Diablo (which also shoots your "new generation gamers" theory as well) and continued on to D2.  I have both a hardcore level 99 D2 Amazon and a hardcore 99 D2 Barbarian, among lesser softcore 99s. I know how to play the game, trust me.

D3 was a decent ARPG. It is now a better ARPG with a good future ahead of it.

You really should try it, get in on the beta, before immediately trashing it without truly knowing anything about the xpack. Just sayin'.

The problem here isn't Blizzard. It is the console manufacturers. They do NOT want their devices to be able to talk to each other. They do not care that your friend has a XBox and you have a PS. They want you to buy their system if you want to talk to your friend.

And a lot of us got burned by D3 so it is fair if many of us are a little bit cautious and critical of anything D3 related. Just sayin'.

Also generalizing people by saying we didn't like D3 and won't like this one because of inherent bias seems a little off since many of the complaints I have are because they haven't released information that fixes the problems I had with D3 and I am sure there are more out there.  You seem a little touchy towards this mediocre title so I won't go into details on my long list of complaints. I will however say that a few of my gripes have been addressed so at least the game is going in the right direction.

RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Paul Gray.
