Well, you should ask the one who gave you the game about the receipt and return it to the shop where he/she got it for you.

If you can't get it to work, then that's the way to go. You said you've tried everything, and emailing them about it I'm sure won't work.

When i was playing swg quiet a while ago , and was getting bored of it i thought i would try another game and MxO seemed to be the one for me (As i loved the films) i brought the game BRAND NEW from the shop installed , updated  went to register and to my amazement INVALID CD KEY! i was dumbfounded , tryed everything .

So i started digging roun don forums trying to find out info , only to start seeing hundreds of bad posts about the game and i mean hundreds. So i deleted all the stuff off my comp and returned the game to the shop to get my refund. Needless to say since all the shit that happend with swg with the imfamous $0e i have decided maybe it was the best thing that happend to me regarding a mmo and im glad i didnt get it registered.

Well that was helpful.  Telling everyone not to play it because you read a lot of stuff about it.

Hahaha, they still haven't fixed the Invalid CD Key error. Sorry, that was happening way back in Beta. Nothing personal, please take no offense. The Invalid CD Key can be one of three things.

    1) Some of the games that shipped the printing of the CD-Keys was messed up. Meaning that it didn't print it clearly. The bottom section of the Print-Out is missing. So what may seem as maybe VV is actualy a W, what may look like a G is actualy a 6. Mine was like that, but after a few minuites of looking at it, I got the right combination, wrote it down and was done with it.

    2) Some keys were totaly un-useable. I never found a good answer on this one though. Some say the Keys were the Same as Beta keys, some say the Keys were never registered into the system, and still others say that it was a mix-up at the Key binding phase of the Beta-Live transition. But that was mostly an issue for Beta Players. Some keys didn't or couldn't bind to players Beta passes and had to be reassigned and Beta bonuses had to be recreated for Live version and New Accounts created, etc, etc, etc.

    3) Lastly, there were some problems that arose when WB sold MxO to SOE. Rumor(please note the word "Rumor") has it that some keys were lost in the hand-over of the game and those boxes and their keys became obsolete. This is something you'll have to deal with Customer Service for. But don't swear by this, like I said, the Rumors I heard were about Key Loss in company transition.

As for the previous post reviewing the game. Unfortunately in this case, most of the bad things you hear are true. The game is aweful. Has to be one of the worst games I've ever played. Beta was so much more fun, even with the cheating in Live Events. Now of course, this is only my opinion. But it is based on more than just what I've read. Once upon a time there were supposed to be add-ons you could buy for your ships to enhance all the crew members, when I left that dream was long gone. The number of world and interactive events were countless before, now I hardly see any and last I played there were few. Which is sad because that is one fo the things that lured me to be a Beta tester in the first place. I met Morpheus and Niobe, got my ass handed to me by the Henchmen of the Merovingian(but my last dieing moment I got to the stairs of his loft in the Merv Club which was very cool), I got to help free some "lost souls" trapped between the Matrix and the real world, participated in a 4 hour brawl against the Agent Army(start to finish, it was so cool), and many other countless adventures. But that's all gone now. There used to be so much you could do and always something to participate in on a Game World level but since SOE took over I hear very little out of it. It's why I stopped playing. So, IMHO if the CD-Key alone is giving you a lot of trouble, save yourself the disappointment and return it for another on-line game. But again, that's just my opinion, either way I hope it works out for you and you have fun playing whatever it is you choose to play. ^^
