I originally wrote off Darkfall as an EQ2 rip off several months back. I've been hearing alot about it lately so I went back to take a second look, wondering if I had missed something. Apparently I missed the complete lack of the leveling system. It still has classes, but the underlining system is based on skills that any character can learn at any time, I think....
Anyway.... My question is this: are there any limits on the numer of skills your character can learn and do you keep skill levels in the skills you don't use? I know the characters are supposed to be heroes and all that, but even hearoes have limitations. In fact, sometimes heroes are made by winning in the face of their own limitations. Well, that and I can see some players trying to max out all of their skills. With over 500 skills, that would take a damn long time. None the less, if it's even possible then some shadey griefers will abuse it.

Darkfall an EQ2 rip?!
Despite being an open PvP environment since its conception 4-5 years ago
But to answer your question. Theoretically a character can max every skill. They are not limited to learn what their class defines (See UOs skill system). However each skill has a cap, obviously, but more importantly there is a "soft cap" on the total amount of skills learned. The first X skills will raise steadily and once you reach this soft cap learning other skills becomes progressively slower. Also different skills will be "larger" in terms of reaching the soft cap. So baking may be worth 10 points while Blacksmithing could be 100.
I'm a follower of Darkfall now.
It looks to be a great game to me, just what I was looking for if it comes to fruition.
It is free pvp so there will be griefers and gankers. I know it's hard for non-pvp people to understand but there's a huge upside to the dangers of ffa pvp. Even before the game has started I've found a community of people. It's like old times with people sharing ideas and a true one-for-all feeling to it.
That's because it takes that kind of effort just to keep your own castle and lands safe.
It's not in Beta yet so a lot of this is pure speculation. What I'm seeing and hearing make it sound like the game for me if the implementation is done well. They have everything I want from total skills to factions to ship to ship and ship to shore combat.

Darkfall as an EQ2 rip?
the ONLY thing thats similar is the medieval fantasy setting hehe. everything, and i mean everything, else is different.
anyways there anyone can learn 95% of skills, the other 5% belonging to the prestige classes. the thing is, once you hit the soft cap, your start slowing down. at first it might only be a skill gain decrease of 40% or so, but then it goes to 50% the next skill, 60% the next, 70% blah blah blah. someone asked claus (lead developer) how long it would take to skill all the 95% of the skill a single character can learn to max, and he replied "forever".
dont worry, noone will ever ever max all the skills out, not because it couldnt be done in a few years or so, but noone will care enough. everyone will be pvping and having fun. i know for one im going all out combat/healing with combat supportive skills. im going to rely on the people who focus on crafting for my goods, im going to rely on people with buff type magics for buffs, so on so forth. it seems to me its going to be an interdependant game, which is awesome/important for a good player run economy.

Darkfall EQ2 rip?
Could you please post link to what you wrote. I am curious what in common you found from these two apart from being medival fantasy game.
I just want to know how in the wide world of sports could you think that DF is a rip off of EQ2
I thought that Darkfall looked like an EQ clone actually. The reasons being: medival fantasy setting, blocktastic graphics (they look alright, but Doom 3 it ain't), and the interface looked similar to me. You can play EQ in either first of third person mode so.....
I didn't read a whole lot about the game. I think it's cool that they're trying to bring back some old school UO play mechanics, but I'm reserving judement for if/when it comes out.
