General: Shining Force Online Set to Hit Beta This Week

Looking back at days of yore, Shining Force Online is an arcade gamer's delight, hearkening back to the old SEGA days. SFO is set to go into live beta service on Thursday, November 28th, just the thing to play after a glut of turkey on the American Thanksgiving Day.

Shining Force Online features a large cast of playable character (20+ from the original title!). It uses a combination of graphics from the Gameboy Advance remake (Resurrection of the Dark Dragon) and original art by unFun Games. This game is not intended to be canon inside the Shining Force universe. Therefore most storylines from SEGA's original games have been left untouched. Instead, you will see characters you recognize in completely new scenarios.

The game will be constantly evolving. New quests, character, and story missions will be added on a weekly basis. The goal is to make this one of (if not) the biggest MMO ever in terms of story and world size.

Read more on the Shining Force Online site.

Thanks to Massively for picking up the story of this unique title.

Oh my f'in god! I love the Shining Force series! I hope it's like PSO! Either way I'm all over this! Hopefully they don't bastardized it.

Maybe good to mention that this a is a (completely free) fanmade game.

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

Not completely free, the wiki says you eventually have to pay to continue.  Though sounds like it's solo or with others, but not sure yet if you gather your party like the game or just actually joining others is where the group comes into play.

Though it includes the regular cast, so I guess you do form your own team if you want.

You misread the website. It is free to continue. You have to pay to be able to chat with other players. I dunno about this. It is basically a one player game with the option to interact. I LOVED SF and SF2, but this sounds wonky.

    The website disagrees with you.

"The game is free. I don't mean "free to play" which means at one point you have to pay money to keep going. It's not "pay to win" either. You can't spend money on items, experience, or money."

Although, apparently you have to pay for chat, which sort of defeats the MMO aspect of the game.
