[Column] Warhammer 40.000: Eternal Crusade: Futuristic Warfare

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

One of the hallmarks of Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade is combat. In our latest column, we offer ideas on ways that combat could be made more realistic. See what we propose before heading to the comments.

One word came into my head as I began to write what the battlefields should look like, Hazardous Terrain. I think there should definitely be aspects of the terrain in the video game taken from the tabletop. Moving and fighting over hazardous terrain brings some great challenges to the field. I can imagine having pools of acid or traps with spikes. Attempting to assault a bunker and getting caught on razor sharp wire. Most of all, there needs to be fire, the burning hell that is so well depicted in the 40K artwork needs to burn all around. This also plays into vehicles. Some vehicles should have to go around walls, while hopefully Land Raiders would go right through them.

Play to its strengths? Obviously that's what we want but its the rare IP that has done that in the MMO/MMO like game world, you can but hope.

@Rockniss Not sure if "Coke for the Coke God!" would be a battle cry for Khorne or Slaanesh. xD

Could definitely see Nurgle sniffing a few white lines between meals, not to mention Tzeentch stuffing his beak and cackling in the warp...

Not gonna lie it be pretty sweet to have audio pop up that's an incharacter voice of radio chatter alerting you to battlefield conditions. Much like in DoW, here's some soundboards :)

Those two deviant artists have other boards too, I love the ork ones and can just imagine the glory of hearing an Ork yelling in my ear about objectives, enemies, and other notable activities in game :)

All of this has been done many times before and it became boring many years ago.

What is needed now is a new angle to make things exciting. For example, a Call of Duty or Mass Effect 2 style game where you play the role of a Guard Commissar, such as Ciaphus Cain.

I think this has potential. Going save marine gameplay = better combat but less RPG.

How strategic can they achieve in mass pvp I mean war not battle.

    Dear Garrett,

Thanks you again for a great article. Now I am getting worried you have placed spy mic and cam in our office!!! LOL Since we share the same view in our World Design.

I am alergic to Cartoony, especially for a 40K game like Eternal Crusade. We want DARK and GRIM but with a twist.... Remember I did my university in a Military College doing a bachelor in military Strategy...... :-) Rest assure, the team and I have crazy ideas, outside the normal swamp, snow, etc, to challenge the Players Military mind.

Your first allied.... or enemy... will be the spot where you are!! :-)

We will make sure to keep it in the 40K philosophy..... To make it as unfair as possible but unfair equally to all factions!!

I will ask Steven, Eternal Crusade Lead Level Designer to comment on your article since he is the true expert... I am just an exec lol.

Come and chat with us Crusaders in our Forums.

Really liking the looks of this game, and like I said last time the fact an exec from the studio comes here and makes comments just screams to me, "these guys actually give a crap what we think!"

Very refreshing to see that our opinions are being noted and are valued :)

Hi Garret!  We're going to investigate hazardous terrain, because it really is iconic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, but we're not quite there yet.

RIGHT NOW we're investigating the fundamentals of how we're going to build our open world, and how lush, exotic, and 'grimdark' we can make it.  I'm very pleased with what we've been able to do so far!

Regarding objectives, while many objectives will be static (conquer this Biologis Research Facility, etc), we're currently also planning on mobile objectives like you describe.

We're also talking regularly about deployment, and what "mobility" means in a game like Eternal Crusade.  We'd really like committing your forces to an area to mean something, but we also want players to be able to get to where the action is!  We're in the process of brainstorming some solutions to this dichotomy, and I think we have some interesting ideas.

Sorry to tease, but I can't wait until I get to tell you and the Eternal Crusade community more!

And, of course, note that all of the above is currently being designed and is subject to change. ;)
