Most MMO's Ive played kind of feel the same

So I've mostly been playing F2P MMOs for a few years now and have subscribed to two MMOs which were EVE Online and SWTOR ( btw I regret spendiing my money on SWTOR ) and all the F2P games seem to be the same. When you start you fight these weak NPC's , level up after killing a few of them. Get a quest beat these NPC's up or get pick this up bla bla bla and then you get better armor from finishing your first or second quest and that process keeps going on until you get out into the world that everyone else is in. And what might seem fine to you guys but annoys me is this system in almost every MMO I've played except for EVE online is that if there is a NPC that's near or a few levels above you all you gotta do is level up a few times and come back and beat them in seconds. Oh and in these MMO's the missions are always called quests, when some players create their own little group it's always called a Guild. Not sure if it's just me though but the MMOs (at least the ones I've played seem to have very little to offer from one another), I haven't played a lot of MMO's but here's the list: Runescape, Runes of Magic, TERA, EVE online,SWTOR, and RIFT (playing it a bit right now but not feeling like playing it much).

Try a sandbox like Wurm. Or play an mmo that lets you do something besides combat such as A Tale in the Desert. Time for you to diversify your portfolio my friend :)

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.

You can also put a sping on combat with turn based and strategic MMOs like Atlantica Online, Dofus, and/or Wakfu.

    also this!

That's because for the last 9 years every MMO with any kind of budget has been a WoW clone, with two exceptions, GW, and Vanguard.

People also bring it in with them. They walk around these worlds pointing out everything that is familiar and ignore everything new the game has to offer. It's no wonder they don't have any fun.

It's like going to the grand canyon and while you are looking down into the massive hole the water has carved into the earth, they're back there saying " wow lame the bathrooms have the same tile pattern as yellowstone".

A lot of these games are pretty good in their own right but the problem is they are built with the same game designs. This in turn takes away from the sense of novelty.

It is my personnel opinion that most of the people clamouring for an old school MMO on these forums aren't really looking for that type of game but instead want to reexperiance that sense of newness.

Indeed I'll try other Sand box MMOs out, EVE online was great for a bit fun but the combat was boring.

I heard that the fight never ends, not that it's a bad thing but eventually I'll try Planetside 2

Hate wagon? I'm stating a fact. The reason most MMOs feel the same is because they're all designed as a clone of the same game with one or two small distinguishing features.

Foomerang and Mtibbs have some great suggestions. Exploring out from the mainstream MMOs will give you a more diverse MMO gaming experience. Try out some of the games on Larsa's thread as they offer a broader range of what MMOs offer.

Most mainstream MMOs have only one real path of advancement - killing stuff - and they normally are designed around a  level-based, class restricted progression system, so it's understandable that many feel the same. Check out the games that the above posters suggested, and take a look at Larsa's list to see if there's anything else there you might like. The best part is that many of these games are either free or offer a long enough free period for you to get a feel for the actual game.

    Good luck!

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Yes he will. The game has no progression, save for Battle ranks and buying new weapons. Its basically a overglorified never-ending Bf4 match, but of lesser quality where zerg tactics and vehicles prevail. Everyone ends of being the same build buying the new Cash shop overpowered weapon. They said they're working on making the game more similiar to PS1, but I doubt it.

Everything good about Ps1 would make the game into a real mmorpg, not a fragfest mmo.

Thanks for confirming that actually, like I replied to him before I heard that the fight never ends. I know not to try Planetside 2 for now, how was Planetside 1 like?

MMO's are addicted to themepark ladders.  The only alternative is a game where you build houses and raise chickens and craft.  No one has gotten creative enough to come up with different.  Maybe it's because of lag.  Probably it's because game investment companies are listening to dollar bills and not to gamer's outcry for new.

I guess it's been because of the huge theme park money makers, but things are slowly changing. Saw a thread somewhere here on this website that was talking about new MMOs that are emerging and how they are different and something like that lol.

To sum up mmo's in the past decade. They have all either been mostly the same game(e.g Warhammer, LOTRO, Rift) or such low quality they're virtually unplayable(e.g DFUW, Vanguard, Lineage 2) or even a combination of the two(Neverwinter).

as far as eve how many of you have tried playing the jumpgate blockade runner in a trasport ship(not those gigantic ones the hualers like a mamoth) That was actualy a ton of fun seacking into 0.2-0.0 space loading up as much cargo as I could with warp  protction mods on my ship and making massive bank jut buying cheap trit!

There are sooo many ways to play that game... its endless

(note faction warp distabilizers cant be prevented)

There is a huge list of Pros from PS!.

    1) You need to spend cert points to be the driver of a vehicle and the driver can't drive and shoot a gun at the same time.

    2) There was an inventory system where you could loot items and bring items like barricades with you; also you could use other factions weapons that were on the ground after they die.

    3)There was a cert cap

4)There was no instant teleporting anywhere; you had to find someone to take you there, unless you could operate a vehicle.

5)Bases actually mattered and were more than just placeholders to initiate battle; they had meaningful strategic worth and people felt the need to live in a base and defend it.

6)Team work and better skill, tactics, strategy beat the zerg.

7)You could conquer a whole continent and defend it from attacks.

    8) There was no instanced world, and could cross the sea to a new continent.

9)Everything about the game except for the graphics and gunplay was by far better.

That happens all the time.  People will point to some MMO off in the future that will "save us all" and when it's finally released, everyone says it sucks and identifies some new game in the far off future that will "save us all".  It never ends because people's expectations are wholly unrealistic and the game they want will never be released because it would bomb at launch.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

But those were all themeparks right?

The thing is that you look at other genres like FPS or single player RPG's and individual games within those genres have vastly more variety in terms of gameplay, lore, story, their general feel etc. than mmo's seem to.  It is just a shame that it specifically seems to be mmo's that are severely lacking in any inspiration or innovation and so averse to risk.

Basically having more fun in single player games? Same for me.
