They're counting sleeper accounts. The idiots that "BLUFF" thinking nobody will notice. They're the ones who say "I QUIT" yet never do. Or they "Quit" simply by logging out, and letting their account subscription continue in an attempt to leave them that one last thread of returning, in fear of them losing their stuff in the game. AC2 depended on these. When Microsoft dropped Turbine's billing, Turbine lost most of their sub base because not many had been migrated over.

He is right .Take AC2 it was able to stand just based on the sleeper accounts which when lost spelt the end of the game.Turbine even openly acknowledged it.
I recall at least 2 people who had accounts they paid for for at least 6 months before cancelling it.One was a DAoC account other was UO.
I myself kept a EQ1 account for over 4 months despite i have quit and never logged in again.
Atm I have a WoW account in which in last month i have logged in 3 times for maybe 10-15 mins each time yet i still pay for it.

Its one of the main symptoms of denial. When the human psyche is unable or unwilling to accept life on life's terms, it creates a fantasy world that allows its screwed up moral failiings to continue to exist unimpeded (at least for a little while). The only hope at this point is a hard, cold blast of reality, since our in-house intervention failed this reality is most likely to be delivered in the forms of accountants and pink slips.

I think I know what the cause for misperception by SOE about the full status of the SWG servers. It is the Ghost of Christmas Past with the echoes of happier times and happier players. unfortunately the Ghost of Christmas present is here to say Bah- HUMBUG to SOE lame customer service and self righteous if not self serving attitude about their games and thusly their former customers.

Servers are populated, but not as well as in the best days of SWG. SOE is exaggerating, the trolls are exaggerating, the truth is in the middle.

agreed. Isn't the real point SOE stated the CU version of the game was not profitable and thus the nge was a necessary item or the game would fold. Therefore, any logic that states server population is lower with the NGE would mean the game is not in good shape and faces a possible shutdown in the US.
I think we all agree the NGE hurt and not helped server populations from the start. SOE got there arses with the way the nge was put to live and deservedly so. The question is can they recover and turn the tide back. My brother was home for the holidays from LA and plays the NGE version of the game. It is a sad pathetic version of its previous depth and the quest/content was laughable. The interface was as hediously static as possible and I felt bad he still was playing that game. I got him a real fps for the pc called F.E.A.R. to show him what an fps is. I figured once he plays that game with realistic AI he will realize what a joke the NGE is. I think Christmas hurts soe because this game is "old" and "new" games get sold and played with the holidays. MMO titles, fps, rpgs, sports games all attract those former SWG players and get there attention and harddrive space. I unistalled SWG this weekend because of space issues. Once players start doing that to free up space for other games (Average of 10% of a standard 40gb hard drive) you will start to really see if soe is capable of getting anyone to retry this game.
Frankly, the hypothosis they would attract "new" subcribers with this at the expensive of vetern players is a bit misguided and overly optimistic. Who is going to buy, as gift for someone, a game 2-3 years old? Most buyers figure you would have either played it by now or own it so I am hard pressed to believe Christmas was "good" for this game. That leaves word of mouth from active players and former players to attract "friends" to a game. The I am playing swg right now, or the you have to check out this game. Maybe the did you see the new swg game. They redid it and it is totally awesome! Which isn't happening from the likes of this thread, the reviews and other things. One last point of reviews. My 50 year old mother said while handing my brother a gift. I read all the amazon reviews and got this for you. SOE better not think this isn't weighing on buying. When mothers start reading reviews online for games to buy kids. Oh... the whole never buy another soe product again thing is not good. See mothers and women are consumers who buy "names" and word of mouth like that can be deadly.
So when we get down to nutz and bolts of the games health SOE/LA are obligated to say things are peachy. So complaining about them not publically acknowledging the size issue is stupid. They see the hard numbers and know. They admit to watching subscriber numbers. That should be enough for you.
I forwarn anyone investing time or energy in this game beware. SOE can shut the game down or change it at will. It will nullify any work you may do during the course of the game and make anything you "value" about your character "junk". They can do it in 2 weeks with no testing. They have done it before. If you can handle watching something you built torn down ok. Adults bitch when you try and tear down old baseball stadiums because of the "memories". Kids cry when the water washes away there sand castles. Gamers FLAME when you take away there "experiences".
I don't pretend to be in love with soe. I am so angry that there management makes changes like the CU and the NGE and doesn't consider those with valid questions and concerns who are being nothing but objective and nice to be totally ignored and basically told take it or leave it.
Old icons and a limited combat que with the CU. Was this to much to ask soe to add in? Was it really worth the bitch fest? It was only asked for 1000 times or more. The old interface and allowing us to activate specials simply by depressing the numeric key corresponding to the special instead of hiting said numeric key and then having to click the right mouse button to activate it. Was that really game breaking and worth it SOE?
I can name about 10 other issues like this that good customers asked SOE to impliment. Anyone who can defend this company does so and makes me lose all respect for them.
Whether you like the NGE or Not. The way soe does these revamps is disgusting and perverse and violates all tenants of software development. You are just a sucker in my not so humble opinion if you pay to play the nge version of the game. Yo, I got some good weed... of course its real...
SOE is probably also counting all the active "Station Access" accounts that ever logged in to SWG as "active SWG subscribers"
After all, they have played the game before, and they are still paying for their Station Access, so they can at any time play again. And part of that Station Access sub is going to SWG, not so ?
Just because you're not playing doesn't mean you are not an active subscriber. And what about all those people who prepaid 6 and 12 month subs ? They may have quit the game, but they are still "active subscribers" untill their paid time runs out...

If it's all that populated why did they throw in RoTW with the Starter Kit recently.
Two expansions they are giving away doesn't sound healthy to me.
