The More I See...

kruluxkrulux Member Posts: 229

The more I see of Wildstar, the more I like.  I like the style and attitude of the content released thus far... tongue-in-cheek if you will.  I hope this attitude can be found in the actual game, more adult/swim/robot chicken than cartoon.  Keep it up!

I've watched most of the official videos and read a few of the previews... the game is looking solid.  I like it.  One thing I'd like to see, or at least discussed in detail, is exactly how large this game will be.  With one of the arch-types listed as "adventurer" I'd hope the game world is on the large size.

I'm all for premium content, instanced goodness - but some good ole'fashioned land mass is where its at for me.  Older games like Asheron's Call had a massive 2-hour real time run across the island for your exploration enjoyment... it took 6-hrs to run the circumference, so true adventuring could be had.  I hope Wildstar can deliver at least the land mass of WoW, although even it felt small compare to some...

Also, just a closing thought... will the housing be as crowded as it was in say SWG...?  or will it be instanced?

dont get your hopes too high,... this will be the best themepark since WoW, but...this is a gear grind type of game.  I dont imagine explorer roll being nothing more than a tack on.  I will play still..but it does look like a rush to level cap and start gear grinding type of game.

    playing: Dragon Age
    Waiting: for FF14, Mass Effect
    Want to try: Fallen Earth

Much of that depends on the player (whether you're actually interested in raiding), and what other activities outside of raiding they'll offer. The path system for leveling will hopefully keep altoholics like me happy for quite awhile. If, as a crafter, I can help the raiding community with supplies, etc, then I'll be happy to make money for a good long while.

I actually don't see myself raiding a ton within the game, so if Carbine doesn't provide other activities, I don't see myself playing for a tremendously long time. I am planning on giving them at least 6 months though.

I was on the fence about it till I played it at pax. Even though it was pretty limited in what you could do I was not impressed with what I saw.

I think what I want in an mmo has gone a long ways from where wow is so a game like this is no longer even aiming for someone like me. But for people who are fans of wow but just tired of playing it this game will probably be exactly what they're looking for.

I think if this game does well it's really going to hurt the argument that people want something other than wow. the truth is, people want well made games with some thought put into them and it seems the only games that ever get that....are games like wow.

Housing will be instanced.  The other houses in the background is just wallpaper.  A bit misleading from the trailer, but then again, most trailers are.

    Community Questions Answered

    http://wildstar-central.com/index.php?threads/arkship-2013-community-questions-answered.1371/

Prior to Arkship 2013, we asked the WildStar community to compile a list of questions they were burning to have answered. The questions spanned across all aspects of the game and while the event was under the auspices of a Non-Disclosure Agreement, we worked to collect those answers.

And today, Carbine Studios have verified that you can have some of those answers you have been seeking! So, with no little amount of joy I bring you some answers to your questions from inside Arkship 2013.

    Housing
Is housing instanced? And exactly how are there house battle zones going to work?
Housing is instanced. The War Plot system is the “housing” battle system.

Is housing mobile? Will it be like UO where certain spots were coveted for being near good mining?
    Housing is instanced.

I don't think the Wildstar team is listening or very smart and here is why.

Yes they are making what "appears to be an ok game, nobody knows for sure, unless having tested it already.

Here is the thing though,i am quite sure MANY adults would feel out of place in a game that looks like a little kid hangout, the graphics alone can ruin that part of the immersion for older gamer's and no not all, before anyone starts down that road.

I do however believe that younger kids would not feel out of  place if playing a more natural looking game also with better textures. So their team imo can't be that dumb to cater to a LESSER crowd, this is why i believe it is totally for the purpose of making a cheaper less costly to make and run game,it has NOTHING to do with art style or anything else like that. Here is another thing,if that excuse was the sole premise there is nothing stopping a dev team from delivering a separate texture pack UT99 did it 14 years ago.

Really the media instead of kissing their ass to get advertising money should address the question and ask them WHY?Even the cartoon look doesn't cut it when you are using amateur looking textures,PIXAR would roll in their grave if they saw how WS is delivering textures and colour.

To prove it really does matter enough ,i would personally play this game for certain but as is ,no way could i support a slack effort for visuals when i am playing a 3D visual "video" game.Have we even heard ANYONE address the WS team about their graphics,i don't remember seeing anyone delve deep into it with questions.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

And are you basing this on the exhaustive market research you have conducted?  Or is it maybe based off your personal feelings?

I think the art style looks great.

When first logging in you see a yellow exclamation mark over an npcs head.  No matter how compelling the end game is I just don't have another quest grind in me, much less one through another cartoony world.

I am an adult and still like cartoons/anime..I think its closed minded to dismiss a game because of artsyle and missing out on great games.  Kingdom hearts, Ni No Kuni, etc ...these look like kids games but, damn if they aren't good games.

  • See, OP, that is the problem for me. The cartoony graphics, lack of textures, and tongue-in-cheek attitude are all the reasons I won't play. I just don't feel like I can take my characters seriously, much less the rest of the game.

Well, when Kingdom Hearts released, the graphics and textures it had were great. Not sure what Ni No Kuni is though.

I definitely get where you're coming from, but I'm to the point of not wanting to take a video game seriously and WildStar may be just what I need right now.

I view it more from perspective of personality. I know it sounds cliche but game feels very distinct with its art style it feels like it has character. On the other hand when I look at a lot of other games today like TSO or Archage they look pretty but they don't feel distinct, and have more of this generic look and feel to it. Wildstar on the other hand is very well stylized and visually vibrant.

It is not my place to judge but I think what we take seriously is the game play and community inside the game rather than just art. If you put a bunch of very competitive people at the pokemon card game table things turn dead serious very fast.

Please speak for yourself, i like the style Wildstar is taking and i am pretty sure i belong to one of the more older crowd, realistic graphics are more often then not a bad idea for a MMO.

Still baffled why people want "realistic" graphics in a not even remotely realistic virtual world.

Too many times in the past have MMOs done the same hype and same spin.  I doubt Wildstar will be no different.  Looks fun and great but so did all those other themepark MMOs that I left within a few short months.  Waiting to see how players react and the threads start and grow bored with WoD this summer before even considering the game.

Some people want something different from wow because they are either over wow or don't like that type of gameplay. I see people slamming game companies on this forum a lot for trying to dev a game for a niche type of player. Well, IMO this is exactly what the industry needs. Make one or the other ... do it really well for that player base and attract your core base.

I played EVE for 7 years now and over the years there have been many many wow players come to EVE to try it out and the game was just not for them. That is perfectly fine, those people who don't find EVE fun don't need to be there because they don't add anything to the game but a bunch of complaints. Also, the avg age of the players in EVE is a lot higher than many other games ... up in the 30+ range if I recall correctly. That is also perfectly fine, the learning curve the game has and difficulty level and level of perceived grind and everything combined is a great filter to weed out those gamers that would not find the game fun and quite frankly I don't want them there.

Back on topic ... I have been following Wildstar and its totally not my style of game but even at 43 years of age I do like the art style and it does look interesting but levels and questing and gear and all that is not  my cup of tea.

  • Aldous.HuxleyAldous.Huxley Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 418

The argument of art style is pointless. Some like it, some don't.

Imo, the WildStar art style sucks & I won't play WS based on that. And this is coming from a person who enjoys the aesthetics of FF.

  • Psion33Psion33 Member Posts: 248

It seems the sense of escapism draws really deep in some folks. I think those that may want a more realistic looking game got some deep-seeded mental issues, not trolling but serious.

  • RusqueRusque Member RarePosts: 2,785

The devspeak videos have me really excited, and even though I got into the stress test beta, I haven't been able to play (successful stress test I guess).

Wildstar is a game that I will not buy without playing. I need to feel the combat and see the world in action.

You really need to learn to speak for yourself and only yourself.  I'm an adult and I love the art style.  People like you probably think South Park is for kids because its a cartoon.

Wish this forum had a like feature great post.  If people are expecting anything other than a themepark from Wildstar yeah they will be disappointed.  They have stated all along it's themepark with a few twists, even the housing isn't sandboxy.  I am also in my 40's and love the artstyle because it fits the game.  Overall what I like most about WIldstar is the attention to the little things QoL that alot of games skimp on for release.

I happen to be on the opposite side of the fence.  The more I see, the more Im pushed away from this game...  I was going to play it because friends are into it but I just dont know if I want to invest time into something Im just eh about.  But hey, to each his own.  Its funny because at first I was eh about Elder Scrolls Online and good to go with Wildstad but it seems Ive switched places.  Im really excited about Elder Scrolls and Eh about Wildstar.  To me, Elder Scrolls classless system where you can create what you want intrigues me more.  I saw the Medic and Engineer video for Wildstar and was turned off big time.  The more creations I come up with for a class in Elder Scrolls the more I get excited.

On top of that, the "darkness falls" style dungeon in Elder scrolls has me excited as all hell.  If it has good PvE and DAoC style PvP, Im set.  I truly miss DAoC.  Sucha  great game.  The contested dungeons have me excited because it sounds like theyre actually making them worthwile.  Loot, xp groups, exploring.  All that sorts has me missing my old EQ days of contested dungeons.  THOSE are great memories.  Not this disconnected dungeon finder bs...As convenient and good as it may be, it disconnects you from these games.  You do not remember anyone you grouped with a few minutes after a dungeon.  No community.
