Subscribers to Star Wars: The Old Republic can now check into the game to try out the forthcoming Galactic Starfighters content expansion. Most prominently, Galactic Starfighters will bring aerial combat into the game.
From the start, we wanted to make sure that we nailed the feel of “free flight” Star Wars space combat, so we’ve taken great pains to get the controls just right. It is flat out fun to simply fly your ship through the battle zones we’ve created. The Scout feels zippy and maneuverable, the Strike Fighter nails the all-purpose combat role, and the Gunship is really, really good at picking off targets from long range then relocating to the next cover point to keep out of harm’s way.
Finally, there are a TON of options for customization. And I’m not just talking about re-painting your ship (though I recommend that you do!). I mean swapping out your weapons and engines and SEEING the actual ship change shape, while altering your stats and abilities. I’m talking about equipping Treek as your co-pilot and hearing her chirp at you when an enemy is locking onto you with missiles. PLUS repainting your ship, recoloring your paint job, customizing the color of your blaster bolts and your engine trails. Beyond the visual and audio customizations, Major and Minor components plus Crew equal a HUGE number of stat and ability changes that allow you to tweak your Starfighter to your heart’s content and the Major and Minor components all have full upgrade paths as well.

Just did my first battle, that was intense...
I can see this being the sole reason some folks play the game moving forward.
Battleground in ships.... big (&@#@ deal !!!
Make it where you can have a ship, customize it, and fly around from planet to planet, from area to area!
Open up harvesting in your ship, battlegrounds in ships is not the coolest thing ever... its been done... boring!! Make the ships and the ability to fly around more meaningful than a damn battleground !!!
I thought you could customize it?

Not sure if you know this...but if you stop pressing down on "a" or "d" you stop rolling.
Just say'n.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
Well SWTOR only had one other expansion. And that cost money. And it stunk.
So saying this is the best expansion is accurate! Because it's the only interesting expansion! And because it's free .. sort of .. until a person realizes that they have to spend money to be competitive (or grind 100's of hours F2P .. persons choice).
I've gone back to playing XWing, personally. Pew Pew!!
[SWTOR is sort of freemium, so I can still come back to analyze how badly the SW franchise has come, which I do!

Recognize the voice? Yep sounds like Penny Arcade's Extra Credits.
This is basically the issue. It isn't really part of the rest of the game. From what I understand the rewards and progress are completely independent from the normal game. So if I want to play a really great starwars flight game, why not actually do that instead of this, there has been lots of them over the years. XWing is one hell of a great game.
Thats what the devs are probably thinking... but if they said that imagine how badly their business would tank.
A lot of the business is built on good intentions, since looking at the game for what it is in terms of all the funding it had, the resources it had as part of the EA franchise (access to existing MMO engines, but rather use the hero engine that is used as a skeleton for MMOs - but 'modify' it) and the end result is now an end game for two years plus 5 years of development that is only a few WZ's, duel arenas, a few OPs/FPs, mini space game, and now free form flight.... thats 7 years of 100s of millions of dollars to have that as end game.
You have to say, that when put into perspective it makes you wonder why not give another SW MMO a chance. Is it really worth suckering people into the cash shop to keep the game going milking the SW name, when it has no chance at open world pvp? [mod edit] but if they did, then suddenly the game would look so much worse without all the good intentions, hype and so called promises which really keep this game going rather than being the best in the market.
Write bad things that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble
The game engine was decided (by the clueless BW CEO at the time who was more interested in the free presents he got from the HeroEngine marketing guys) long before EA came in the Picture. So let´s drop this engine debate, so we don´t derail yet another topic!
You get normal XP as well to progress your ground character. Just like you get normal XP via PVE Space missions.
And ofcourse GSF has it´s own progression system to Guess what? To progress Your ship.
Nothing New in the MMO genre. Hell even JTL had this back in the SWG days. So just you (or any disgruntled SWG vet lurking out there) don´t bother bringing it up.
When i usually dislike something i move on. Its been what 2 years now? i never understand this obsession of some people with things they hate. Trust me you don't have to like it.

Well considering most people are max level, xp doesn't seem like much of a boon. Do you get any form of currency that is usable in other areas of the game? Even if it isn't useful in PvE, since it is a PvP activity something useful for normal PvP maybe? If you do at least that is something. Still, I felt the same way when they added Pokemon to WoW, WoW's version cannot compare to the real thing so why wouldn't people just go and play the better game.
It´s a New mini game. That´s all it is and it´s fun!
Since People were so bragging about the JTL expansion.
That expansion was also just added and felt as a seperate entity.
The only connection JTL had With the groundgame at that time, that it completely wrecked the groundgame lol and that People could craft ship Components. But for the rest it was a completely standalone entity With it´s own progression. Hence, why it was not affected by the NGE.
Im with you im just not sure yet..
At least they inverted the flight controls.
But the "minigame" is simplistic, simple customization, which is fine.
But the controls are clunky as hell. If you go into a dive and juke left and then climb all in one motion, you will be stuck in a dive until you move your mouse back into the center of the screen.
It's like playing an alpha mod from someone on Greenlight or something. Not what I would expect from a AAA game company.
Well I guess it's good for any Star Wars fans playing SWTOR that don't actually own a Star Wars themed space flight game then. But I have a feeling if you are a Star Wars fan you have at least one such game(I think I have 3).
you know bioware wont ever read this?
the game mechanics have already been established, if you want open world (in this case - space) this will make the game at least 60GB, and considering how slow it downloads, installs, updates and loads, it will do it even slower
did you ever thought that if you want open world and you have access to only a certain part of the planet, what would happen if you wanna land on a different part of the planet? maybe an error message saying "sorry, bro, you aint cool enough to land on this part of the planet, you have to subscribe first."
your whole idea is overall good, but given the current circumstances, its flawed.. BIG TIME
swtor is nothing original, just WoW within the star wars universe, and WoW is open world, and this isnt... remember how a guy from bioware used to brag that swtor will kill wow? well after the game was released he kinda stepped off, or got fired, or apologized to blizzard... or whatever. the point is that bold claims arent enough to make a game good
WoW was the best MMO ever and now its in certain ways better, in other worse, while every other MMO of that type that was released after WoW is really flawed - like AION - everyone is playing Elyos and no one bothers to play the other race
but this post is becoming a rant so i will end it right here
