Expansions and patches don't seem to bring me back to a game. It seems as if mmos are created with 30 days of content with the promise of future content.
For me at least, once I un sub THAT'S PRETTY MUCH IT for me unless it's a classic.
How about you, Can you un sub and come back ?

Personally, I've resubbed to two games and enjoyed the experience, one sandbox and one themepark. The sandbox because the thing that that was caused me to no longer enjoy it was fixed, the themepark because ... well ... actually it was more because of the state of me rather than the state of the game changing.
But those are the exceptions. Usually, once I stop playing an immersive game, my imagination never quite sees it the same when I return
I almost never go back to a sub game. The whole idea of signing up for a month just keeps me from ever actually doing it. Sometimes I think I want to play something again until I actually get into the game and remember why I quit.
I go back to f2p games all the time, but I often only play for a few days..or hours before I decide I don't really feel like playing that game. The ones I end up getting back into and find I log in every night for a few days in a row, I normally pay the sub option and play for as long as it lasts.
I don't think this needs to degenerate into another F2P vs P2P discussion.
Personally, the last MMO expansion I bought was Ruins of Kunark for EQ1. Whatever the payment model, I'm usually long gone before any xpac hits and I never return. I like the novelty of new games - expanding an old one is just not as appealing a proposition.
Depends on the patch. Depends on the game.
I never go back , but I did go back to RIFT when it went F2P and had a lot of fun .
Playing FF14 right now and I cant see it lasting much longer unless they get some serious content out n the next 3 months that can keep me busy . Not far from lvl 50 on all jobs already .
Outside of these I've never gone back to any MMORPG once I've left, regardless of payment model, expansions or patches.
I think it's because in most cases the core gameplay isn't something I enjoy and no patch is going to change that.

Same. If its a content addition that I am looking forward to then I will certainly resub for it. I know a lot of people on here like to treat MMOs as virtual worlds, but for me they are games. When I run out of content that is fun to do, or run out of progression, I will leave. I don't mind coming back to check out new content additions, and again I will stay for as long as it is fun to do so.
I have taken many breaks from EQ, EQ2 and WoW while waiting for new content to be released.
yep , sometimes works sometimes doesnt...
my last has beenNeverwinter...played the new Ranger class....after 3 days i was bored again....the new class is fun? yeah but the game isnt ><
i cant wait for FFXIV 2.1 patch ....im bored as hell and only log to do coil (the only raid atm), will finish everything the patch brings...and decide if its worth to keep playing or not...
It depends on why I quit. If the game wasn't something I enjoyed, a patch won't bring me back. If I simply exhausted all the content, an update might prompt me to re-sub.
I think that many gamers are simply starting to realize how terrible most of the MMOs out there really are. The more you play, the more obvious things become. Eventually, you can spot a crappy MMO just by watching a gameplay trailer. Things start to look bleak and you just want to bring back some of that old school magic.
But those days are long gone. MMOs are no longer designed for role players. So, unless you're a teenage COD player, you won't like 99% of the MMOs available today. I am kinda looking forward to Everquest Next Landmark though. It may not be a traditional MMO, but maybe it'll get the old creative juices flowing.
The only expansion that brought me back was CoH when the released CoV which could be considered a different game, depending on your point of view. I have heard that the GW1 expansions people went back to check out as well. But I agree, patches never, expansions rarely. If I do go back to a MMO its only because I feel like it, not because of some new short junk they had thrown in or some power progression.
So what does that mean for companies? Should they stop making content in the hopes of bringing people back? Does it mean there should be a stronger focus on retention since you often do not get a second chance?
Agreed, I re-subbed to FFXIV to level up in preparation for the next patch and the ones to come (looks like the future is bright).
I've returned for almost every WoW expac and even a couple of the bigger patches.
I usually un-sub because the direction they're taking the game isn't one I like, if that changes and they start moving in a direction I like I'll return.
Just because every car has similar features doesn't mean that Ferraris are copies of Model Ts. Progress requires failure and refining.
Same here. Not all patches and expansions are to bring inactive players back, although that would be an ideal scenario. . Some are to build on veteran gameplay, some are to bring in new blood. and almost all are to keep the game in the public eye (something to news/talk about).
I find it amusing that devs still use the term patch, as it's a great term for ongoing software updates, but a horrible term for an ongoing service. An MMO is both, but I'd much rather tell my customers I have a new upgrade or update than tell them I have a new patch for them. The latter seems like a band-aid on something broken.

There are only two games that i returned to where my interested was greater the second time around. They were APB: Reloaded and EQ2. Everything else I had the same experience you had - never quite cared about the games as much as the first time and, as a result, the return visit was rather short-lived.

eh, as far as you only having up to BC, pretty sure you can get all the way up to MoP for like 30(maybe) 40 bucks(in case you thought it was more then that). And correct me if i'm wrong but you can buy the battle chest for $5 now and you get a free 30 days(which is cheaper than paying 15 for 1 month sub). And you can also find someone to refer a friend you for all kinds of benefits.

Ah, i actually wasn't aware you couldn't use the code on pre-existing accounts, in hindsight, i should have known better.
Also to clarify, MoP Doesn't include the previous expansions, But i think their prices goes 20 for cata, 10 for wrath, and 10 for MoP. I said possibly 30 cause i did see a sale at one point where Cata was going for 10 itself but i dont know if that sale is still ongoing.

I'm pretty much the same as you OP, once the fun is over I can't ever get back into it. I tried a few times but rarely lasted longer than a week. New content does nothing for me, I don't play mmorpg's for just the content. I think if the game has given all its got, adding stuff really does nothing new for it.
Seems to me that content patches and expansions are always a day late and a dollar short.
Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
I would say 100% no,but one developer game, proved it is possible with hard work ....FFXIV "Square Enix".
Other developers will just go f2p or close up shop, imo all these other developers are quitters and prove they ONLY care about the business and not the game.I never had any doubt what so ever that Square would continue to add a lot of meaningful content and not just a few instances here and there.
I say this and i am not playing FFXIV and i might never play it but i have always sort of liked Square as a solid developer, there is good reason they have been among the top developers for a very long time.
What is really bothersome is we always hear a lot about patches that change content, but Square was the ONLY one that actually admitted fault and wanted to set things right. You never hear other developers say we are making changes because we got it wrong the first time.
Aside from the obvious FFXIV brilliant come back,i have gone back and given several games another chance. My reason is that sometimes i am just not in the mood to game,so i may have not given a game a fair chance,so i always go back and try again. However in saying that, nothing has ever improved aside from FFXIV,most if not ALL games still feel 100% identical as before their 5/10/20 patches.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
City of Heroes and WoW are the only MMOs I have ever subscribed to after taking a break. I did not re-sub because of a patch, but rather a desire to play the game again. There has yet to be a "patch" (or even an expansion) that has brought me back into an MMO.
It can get really bad to get back into an MMO after a few updates/patches/expansions have been released as a returning player may have to re-learn the whole game again.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
