I never liked minecraft, and ive never played terraria, but this has to be one of the coolest games ive played in a long time. It was #1 in sales and #2 most played game on steam in a matter of hours. Its pretty hard too. I also really like the music and the graphics are much cooler than they appear in gameplay vids. Its also still in beta but you can buy access @ steam. Heres a few details for you guys;

In Starbound, you take on the role of a character who’s just fled from their home planet, only to crash-land on another. From there you’ll embark on a quest to survive, discover, explore and fight your way across an infinite universe.
You’ll encounter procedurally generated creatures and weapons, discover populated villages and abandoned temples. Explore planets dotted with dungeons, eyeball trees and treasure. Make use of over a hundred materials and over one thousand in-game objects to build a sprawling modern metropolis or a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, and do all of it alone or with friends!
Starbound lets you live out your own story of space exploration, discovery and adventure. Settle down and farm the land, hop from planet to planet claiming resources, or make regular visits to populated settlements, taking on jobs and earning a living. NPCs are scattered about the worlds, offering quests and challenges for those looking for a little extra excitement in their lives.

I'd like to think a few of ya gave it a try, but my money is on you chuckled and turned away due to graphics. Its a really cool game thats quite challenging and fun, just fyi!! Ah well.
I thought I read somewhere that the graphics have purposely been turned down for beta, and will be ramped up in future patches.
Already a great game already even though it's in beta. I've had much fun with it in the last 24 hrs. This game has incredible potential, just from all the improvements that the devs will do. Plus, the fact it is moddable
they're probably all mikeB running some zombie server
If I want to play such a game, i'll undust my commodore 64...
Sorry, all though graphics doesn't mean the world to me, but this is riddiculous...
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

Terraria is amazing, perhaps you were just not it's audience? There is no need to bash the game though if you don't like it.
This game seems great, thanks OP for getting me to notice it.

A few Guildies were playing this and talking about it. I looked it up and the look of the game lost me right away.
From the Original Post it sounds like the game has a very strong head start which is always great!
I agree that people should never let graphics dictate if a game looks fun or not. Sadly nowadays, 2d side scrolling gameplay is not my cup of tea.

Starbound is... amazing.
I spent hours yesterday mining a single planet... a single planet out of the possible thousands out there. It's insane.
My gf and I both have over 20 hours played just from this weekend. Such a great game.
I like it thus far, but i can see my attention quickly waning soon. with 3 friends playing over the weekend(while we did play alot)
we've pretty much seen all it has to offer i think. a planet is pretty small, and you can run in one direction and quickly cover all it has to offer topside in 30 minutes.
I'm not sure if its intended, but upgrading pickaxes doesnt seem to do much for mining speed, my platnum pickaxe feels like it mines jsut as fast as my copper one. maybe a bug. Mining a planet definetely takes longer that exploring it topside, but the only reason ive found to go into a planet is crystals i've found near the lava level, which have been of no use to me yet. Other than that, just skimming over the top of the planet and picking the ore you see near the surface has netted us thousands of copper/coal/iron/gold/wood/food/ and the dungeon-type content (Seems to be 1 per planet) is always on the surface as well, and thats where the bulk of our Pixels come from
The 3D printer is crazy exploitable, we made one set of gear per tier and you can just copy it for your other two friends, as well as weapons and most anything else you want.
Storage is a huge pain, the max we've found in any shape or form is 16 slots per container, and that is just far too small.
The weapons for any given tier that drop off monsters/boss monsters are never as good as the weapons we crafted for that tier before going into it. for going into tier 2, we crafted those weapons, and they were always better than the stuff that was found in chests or dropped off mobs.
All in all we are enjoying it, we never played terraria or such games, so its fresh and fun. I dont see me playing it for months though.
My two cents
The Deep Web is sca-ry.
It's a lot of fun but will be better a little further along in development.
Some of the lag needs to be patched out on the servers, optimization is probably still a ways off.
But it's very open ended and the dev team seems very committed.

Once you see some faction-esque / land-claim mechanics this game will really take off.
Combat plays like Contra for my 20-somethings.
From what I've seen it is very similar to Terrania. It does not look like a bad game, but I think there needs to be more done with the ship.
Such as upgrading it to enter the atmosphere, metroid style, or equipping it with weapons for whenever you run into pirates or another player cruising around the universe. Or have abandoned ships/stations to explore.
The more I'm around the forums on this site, the more bitter I become.
Mmmm (salivates)
Picked it up the other day, absolutely amazing game with loads of potential.
Really looking forward to seeing things develop.
