World of Darkness: Layoffs at CCP Altanta Affect Dev Team

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

World of Darkness fans may end up having to wait longer for the game to see the light of day thanks to a round of layoffs at the CCP Games-Atlanta (USA) office. Fifteen employees have been let go according to a statement from CCP's Senior PR Specialist Ned Coker.

CCP today made strategic adjustments to the staffing on the team working on the World of Darkness project in Atlanta that resulted in the elimination of approximately 15 positions at the company.  The change was due to our evaluation of the game’s design and ongoing development needs.  While this was a difficult decision, CCP remains committed to the franchise and our promise to make a compelling, rich, and deep World of Darkness experience.

Made a thread about this a few mins ago (Feel free to delete it mod's it's saying exactly the same thing). So harsh firing people just before Christmas. Hope those involved find some new jobs soon.

Strategic adjustment.... Why do I picture someone getting kicked in the face while they cling to a raft that's starting to sink.

This game was seriously one of the few MMOs I was truly looking forward to, as we don't actually have very many if any dark, vampire/werewolf type games in the MMO genre. If they screw this up, it will be an epic failure. I can't understand how a company would continue to work on a sandbox of trolls(EVE Online) instead of getting this game up and running. Makes no sense.

Seems my interpretation of past events was pretty spot on. They obviously were looking for ways to make more money back during Monoclegate. Instead they let their players dictate their business plans.

They were also looking to bring new untapped players into EVE with their direction with WIS, again they let their current players dictate their future business plans. I'm sure that's all fine and good for their current audience, however for them and everyone looking forward to WOD? Not so much.

Never good news in general, but 15 out of how many? And what positions?

I wish they lost the license tbh, but not gonna happen unfortunately.

This game feels like it's never going to happen!

I worry about the direction CCP is going.  I don't think releasing DUST as a PS-only game was a very bright idea and from what I can see, it has not generated the kind of revenue nor brought in the new players to Eve they had hoped.

If I was running CCP, I would create a copy of Eve and launch it on a second set of servers.  I would change the rules of the game to make it less brutal: auto contracts to prevent scams, no gate camps in empire, no can flipping and other things to attract more non-pvp-focused people into the game.  It could be launched as a "first-step" to Eve and as people play there and learn to love the game, they would eventually move into the original servers where the real action is.  The beauty is, it would take very little development effort since they can use the current game and only change the rules a bit.  It would have more of a chance to bring in revenue than DUST and would be much cheaper and faster to launch than WoD.

Because their only successful venture is called EVE Online, it is unique in the gaming world, especially the MMO scene which likes to copy the well known sandbox milking cow.

EVE is their flagship and main money sink , their 2nd venture WOD isnt even Live yet -probably never will- and their 3rd -DUST- is a massive failure so far.

So yes, why shouldn't they ditch EVE Online as they have so many other good titles to look after?

Shouldn't that "flagship" be making enough money to keep their employees?  Something about that flagship or its business model is making it less profitable than they expected.  Even heartless companies hate firing people during the Holidays, if not for reasons of conscience, then for public relations and image.

How committed can you be if you remove a good chunk of your team.

My thought is that you either make the game or you don't.

    sigh.

I believe this is the second round of significant layoffs this team has experienced.

Makes one doubt CCPs ability to deliver.

Im sure eve is making nice money for them but   they have dust514 and WOD developers to feed also and expenses at china and usa and iceland  .I see some of you dont have any idea about  CCP If you want to see real reeasons behind monocelagate search for  ''greed is good mail '' from CEO ,they wanted add a F2P cash shop to sub based game basicly and WIS was a nvidia APEX demo paid by nvidia , it was  just a room you are inside and can do notthing  what were you waiting from players to say about it ?

CCP is still looking to make more money this is why they brought  F2P manager from EA to CCP while they had been lost their lead designer  when dust published .Do you see focus ? Not game not players but making money nothing changed at CCP front distopia .

CCP published  Dust514 unfinished  /broken / laggy terrible piece of crap  and  this is its results and they made  this is on console  when they have unified hardware . And all of problem had been told and beta , did they listen ? NO http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5386992#5386992  . what did they do when players demanded answers ? They put their head to sand like an ostrich and played 3 monkey until players gave memo

''However, the most dangerous problems have not been fully recognized nor appreciated, despite constant calls for improvement from the community for almost two years. A lack of trust between the developers and the community continues to stand between Dust 514 and its full potential. A lack of communication also persists, and has at least been briefly acknowledged as 'something to improve on' multiple times by everyone we've approached in management. Sadly though, these acknowledgements come with only with the faintest hint of understanding pertaining to the severity of these problems. ''

https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=101452&find=unread  .Funny thins it is a 16* 16 shooter and there was the game MAG with 128* 128 players on PS3

Andrew dont wait anything from CCP ,  youll be disappointed if you wait anything good  , CCP  cant make  a good game their capacity is well known , Youll not see anything better than Dust514  . I could told alot about  their stupity but you can look my old posts if you see how stupid they are.

Agreed. Looks like another game that's going to wind up in development hell.
