MMORPG games with a meaningful housing

SkebabaSkebaba Member UncommonPosts: 3

So, can someone give me some suggestions for MMO games with a housing system that is meaningful and has uses in-game. And not just as decoration.

I have tried tens of MMO games but they all lack meaningful housing.

Out right now, Vanguard and EQ2. Coming soon, Wildstar, ArcheAge and FFXIV.

edit: and Ive heard LotRO has good housing too.

I like lotro housing.  It's mostly decor but the decor is actually trophies/items you receive for defeating bosses in game or completing deeds.  They have personal housing and kinship housing.  There is also storage available in the houses.

UO and Vanguard and umm.... Darkfall i suppose, but that one isnt as robust really. Other than that theres a few games with decent housing, but most of them are instanced :/  I dont bother with instanced housing, for me, if housing is instanced - it might as well not be there at all but ome people dont mind it though :P

You forgot Rift, & Runes OF Magic, Although id say Rift is the best F2P game out there that isn't exactly Pay 2 Enjoy/ Pay 2 Win currently.

EQ2 relaxed most of their restrictions for ftp - bags, coin, gear restrictions no longer exist

but i agree w you, RIFT has a better ftp business model

Depends on what you mean by "meaningful" housing, OP.

As already mentioned, Lotro housing has storage and rested XP so that's useful. EQ2 has trade access and storage so that's useful. Probably several others that are similar, offering prefab housing with some bennies.

But if you want to be able to build, create and design interactive structures, Rift is the best available imo. Easy low-level access, F2P game, sandbox spaces with leaderboards for the competitive. Only a year old and they continue to roll out new features in response to player requests.

I haven't seen anything even competing in the new games coming out.

You're going to have to define "meaningful".

Are you looking for player owned structures that can be contested, conquered and destroyed? Open world structures that can be visited and utilized by other players? Built and furnished through crafting and other player means?

"Meaningful" is going to means something different to each person.

Asherons Call has actual real world housing that other players can visit providing you allow it. The larger homes have storage with guild housing having if I recall 5 storage chests. The size of the home determines the monthly cost as well as how many decorative spaces there are.

Sadly the best housing in an MMO was SWG which you can no longer play. I would say that right now Rift has the best housing in an MMO, all instanced though, not real world. The amount of ways to decorate it is amazing and many would call it a sub game due to the quantity of items and the placement system.

There are plenty of upcoming games that are taking housing very seriously with Archeage, EverQuest Landmark and Shroud of the Avatar being the top three IMHO.

Mortal online, u can place, butchery or crafting tables inside your house... you need a key to open it and someone can kill you on the way in and break inside your house!!! did I mention you can destroy other peoples houses too?

People on these forums like to throw around terms like "meaningful" without bothering to define what they mean by it.  It is a very subjective term.

I do not consider most forms of PvP to be meaningful so PvP-enabled housing has little value to me.  SImilarly I am not big on 'Barbie's Dreamhouse' style decorating so purely decorative housing features hold lttle meaning for me.

I really liked the housing in A Tale in The Desert because it let you create workshops for your crafting activities and store your materials.  There was a ton of utility in it and it was extremely customizable as to how you wanted to lay out things.

I miss SWG housing system because my house served as a museum of my planetary exploits as well as served as my place of business for all things dealing with the Smuggler profession (The Chop Shop).  All of this was situated with a nice over look and short walk from Bestine spaceport on Tatooine.

That's the thing I'm looking for in housing. Houses that have uses instead of being decorations. Like the butchering you mentioned and such. Might want to try out it.

Workshops and other useful things for the game are what I meant. Like in RuneScape your house is really useful for the game.
