Anyone know of an MMORPG that wipes at least world and item data and resets the server periodically? Bonus points if it makes a big deal about the end of the world each cycle. The period could either be fixed(say, 50 days, 3 months) or based on some condition(say, when a raid kills a horrifically overpowered series of instance bosses, or when the player base fails to fend off an increasingly powerful NPC threat).
What I am -not- looking for is a city-building or army-building game like Travian or Archmage:the Reincarnation. I'm simply looking for a standard otherwise persistent MMO that wipes virtually everything periodically.
Thank you!

I would love to know aswell for a MMORPG.
All i know are a set of browser games and action multiplayer games such as Diablo 2 league etc.
I think more MMOs - even the popular ones should have at least ONE server set on a reset, but even before the reset they can transfer their characters to another server if they want to keep their hard earned character. But having a new server wipe etc will get new players and old who want a fresh start in.
only mmorpg i know like that is Tale in the Desert
but be forewarned - there's also no combat

Server wipes make no sense if you are trying to create a virtual world, as persistence and progression are core design principals.
But if you are creating a MMO "game", and so many of them are these days, then some flexibility should be possible.
The key of course is to really tone down the progression element, and take away most of the carrots a traditional MMO has.
Now I'm not really sure what would result, GW2 toned down just a few progression elements and became unappealing to many players.
Yet it still has a strong following, so I suspect players who enjoy it might be enticed into games that reset more readily.
Another group of players who would enjoy this are those who thrill to the race to the top and I'm sure they would want a chance to try again and again.
Key would be as you said, to define some sort of "win state" for everyone to strive for and then build in some sort of recognition system for previous winners that could be persistent from reset to reset.

Maybe take a look at Trions recently announced game, TROVE. http://trovegame.com/
It's not really resetting, but the worlds end and you enter upon a new one. Although I think it's different from your standard MMO, if it's one at all.
