Hero's Journey: Q&A #12, Screens #31

Melissa Meyer, the Producer of Hero's Journey, has answered more of our questions in the 12th installment of our interview series. She has also provided us with two exclusive screenshots of the game as that series enters its 31st week.

image MMORPG.comThe world of Hero’s Journey is still a mystery to many. Can you talk about the backstory of your game, both from a fictional point of view and what logistical efforts are being put into developing it?

Melissa Meyer: Our backstory is developed by an in-house team of designers. Among them are some of the people that developed the extensive backstories for our IFE games, DragonRealms and GemStone. We have also included our Art Director – not only for her amazing capacity at developing creative fiction, but also for her power to assist us in visualizing the world of Elanthia, past and present.

Outside of a few documents, our history is mostly in notes and scribbles at the moment, but we’re slowly working to flesh those out into comprehensible written word. And now that our GameMaster team has begun to mature, we have begun to involve them in assisting us in fleshing out the details.

Our objective is to integrate the history of the world into the game and gameplay to such a degree that people will be inspired to seek it out, read it and enjoy it.

In prior interviews we explained that the world was destroyed hundreds of years ago by the ruling factions, and they are now attempting to put it back together. Beyond that, it is hard to describe in only a few paragraphs. Our history is detailed and in-depth … and discovering all the little details will be an engaging part of gameplay. A backstory of that degree would require many of it’s own Weekly Q&As to begin to unveil.

You can read the full interview and see both new images here.

I LOVED this Q & A. We finally get a small glimpse as to what the PvP will be like. To me it sounds like it will be faction based and will play a part in a larger picture.

Seriously, if this game doesnt dethrone WoW in the ammount of critical acclaim and subscriptions it recieves, i will eat my own boots.

This is the game everyone has been waiting for, they just dont know it yet. It will hit the market like a sledgehammer. So any ETA on beta?

I think this is going to be the game that saves the MMO genre for me. It sounds like they're doing everything right, and that the Devs have their head on straight. Now we just have to hope that the part time GMs can come through for us and pull in their end of the bargain.

i can't wait for some sort of beta, and more screenshots! The armor on that guy in the cathedreal was beautiful!

Yeah, this is definitely the game I have all my MMO hopes and dreams riding on =). I'm pretty much stoked about every little feature I know about this game.

Let's just hope they can pull off what they say they will. We all know how MMO's are with their promised features...=)

Yeah I am definitely getting some positive vibes off this MMO. It's funny, the dev came right out and said, and had it translated into bold capital letters, HEROE'S JOURNEY IS NOTHING LIKE GUILD WARS. When's the last time you heard a dev ever respond with anything concrete like that this early in development? It tells me they have a vision for the game.

This could be the first EVER graphical MUD. I just have a gut feeling this one is gonna be big.

This is going to be the game that finally does it right.  This game will be more like a 3D MUD IMO.

Can we have more details and information about guilds, rewards and raiding?  (not only for me, but I am sure many persons are curious and eager to hear the answer)

There is an Unofficial FAQ site out that has a lot of good info on it. It includes the info we know so far about guilds.

Hero's Journey from all of the articles/interviews I have read sounds and looks absolutely amazing. Simutronics has been completely pioneering MUD's for a very long time, and now that they're moving into the 3d MMORPG genre I am completely tickled. I saw the E3 video which is a camera recording but still gives you a great idea of what it is simu is doing here. The graphics will be nice, but really what I'm completely excited about here is the gameplay, and player interactions. In GW it doesn't matter how good your character is other than meatshields, because there is no reason to trust or need another player to do anything for you. Here, there will be actual services like in GS3 where you can enjoy being a different character..not 80% meatshields. You can actually just go out and hunt if the mood strikes you, or if you wish to enter a quest with some friends, that is completely possible too. Just sounds like such a great combination of everything that there's really no way not to be excited about this one. I really feel like this one is going to be something we have never put out eyes on. ::::04::

Everything sounds great in concept, as have many titles before this that went to vaporware or came out to be a clone of some other title with the notation of "it will come soon in a patch", I do hope this is not the case with this title as it has been so apparent in so many others. We will just have to wait and see.

Well, at least we're now hearing that PvP will help to influence faction! Hopefully, they will write more on this soon!
