Why is this game listed here but Magic: the Gathering Online is not?

Hearthstone and Magic: the Gathering Online (MTGO) are both online card trading games, but MTGO is not listed on this website.

What makes Hearthstone an MMORPG and what makes MTGO not an MMORPG?

Is this because Blizzard have funded advertising with MMORPG.com, but the company that makes MTGO have not? Or am I being too cynical?

Is Hearthstone a card trading game? I thought blizzard didn't allow people to trade cards. You have to earn them in-game or by buying packs. Anyway, correct me if Im wrong.

If you want to put Magic and Hearthstone up against one another in this thread, why not include Scrolls also?

In my opinion, Magic doesn't even need to be included here. Its popularity is big enough that it being included on this site would be trivial at best. In my opinion of course.

Games outside of MMORPGs being listed or not seems to be driven by the interest of the people who post here. If the people who post here are interested in the game, then it will probably be posted, even if it's not an MMORPG. It also seems to be driven by popularity. The more popular something is, if the population of people interested in the game is growing, it's more likely to get posted here.

This site lives off of advertising revenue. The games posted support that revenue by either being of interest of people who peruse the site, or by being of interest to people who haven't been to the site yet.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I heard a similar thing, but I also heard that you have to buy cards to play Hearthstone.

Buying is similar to trading cards. The only difference is that in Hearthstone you buy your cards from Blizzard, but in MTGO you buy your cards either from the company, other players, or buying / selling trading bots.

So basically, there isn't much difference between them in the trading / buying cards respect.

As stated before new games that are of interest to the comunity wil be folowed by mmorpg.com. if magic the gathering has new things happening then ask the staff to follow it. Get enough people to voice the same and they might. Lots of people here were interested in hearth beta and there is the tie to wow.

I think trading is more represented in Magic than in Hearthstone. A card for a card. Not currency paid to Blizzard for something online.

Also, in Scrolls, you CAN trade a card or cards for another card or cards. Its not currency only for a card. Granted, its digital only. But it represents trading much better than Hearthstone does. In my opinion of course.

I'm not so sure about that - On Wikipedia it says that you can purchase booster packs from Blizzard. This is buying / trading cards - we're just arguing over the finer points.

Purchasing cards via in game gold or real money is the only way to accrue cards in HS. MTG offers the ability to also buy cards via real money as well as allowing users to exchange cards directly between players for various other cards. This is not that same thing. Buying cards is not trading cards. They make this distinction explicit by Hearthstone's referral to itself as a CCG (collectible card game) rather than a TCG (trading card game).

Or it could be that a majority of Hearthstone players are also MMO players.  I know because I am one.  I'm sure $$$ has something to do with it but I am almost certain it isn't the only thing.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Perhaps, but I really don't think it matters much at all. Magic still has a huge following. I watch magic tournaments all the time. I still collect cards and I know a lot of people who collect cards. Most people I know don't even know what Hearthstone is. *shrug*

It is probably due to the fact that Hearthstone has tie ins to an actual MMO, whereas Magic does not.

I think the more appropriate question is "Why in the hell are ARPG's and trading card games even on an MMORPG site at all." Next they will add Call of Duty because it has character builds.

    Reason is simple:

    - Hearthstone in closed beta: 1 million players and a few million waiting to get in (source: Blizzard beta invite numbers)

MTGO: 2k max players at night (source: the idiots at Wizard of the Coast show it even in game)

So in one hand you have an interest of multi million on line players and in the other hand you have 2k players...

    Is this fair ?

Nope, but why clutter this site with info on a game no one plays on line. Not talking the paper version because we talk on line here.

Besides I would advice anyone not to start with MTGO as the costs are extreme, up to hundreds of dollars per expansion for just digital cards... , while in HS you can have very valid decks for free and by doing one daily you can have 15 packs FREE per month.

The few thousand players of MTGO are dwarfed by HS already in closed beta.

Magic simply doesn't stand a chance against HS.

This is 2004 all over again where Blizzard stormed the charts with WoW in MMO land.

They now simply redo it in digital CCG land.

Wizard of the Coast will never be up to it: you may bookmark this and repost it at the end of 2014.

As for the paper version of Magic: it will still exist, but in future years the digital card games simply have more attraction because of ease of use, stocking, 24/7 play, and smooth pleasant controls through the iPads.

I am still a board player too, but digital games are simply more played and offer huge advantages iver paper versions.

TenTonHammer believe that Magic: the Gathering is superior to Hearthstone: https://www.tentonhammer.com/wow/features/opinions/hearthstone-vs-magic

I work in PR and I would say the main reason why Hearthstone is more popular than MTGO is due to:

    1) Branding

    2) Advertising

    3) MTGO's publisher not keeping their IT up-to-date

But at the end of the day, Magic: the Gathering is the 'better game' - but what else would  you expect after 20 years of experience?

I refer to advertising dollars. The more money spent means more exposure ... sort of the entire point whether through direct advertising here or indirectly through media reveals similar to what we just saw with Wildstar. I refer simply to business.

First off Mors.Magne... Freedom of speech does not work the way you seem to think it does... Especially not on private forums.

Second of there is no ambiguity about what heartstone is...

Heartstone = CCG (collectable card game) as there is no trading between players of cards.

MtG = TCG (as trading is a core feature of the game)

Third as someone mentioned it is not about quality (and in this case it can be argued that quality is subjective) but quantity. While MtG has a massive community the online version have never taken off. There is not enough in it. Ofc the Blizzard brand helps a lot when it comes to getting people in to a xCG it also helps that Heartstone is a game that you actually can say, don´t worry it is easy to play. MtG otoh is about as complex as you can find. Another problem is that the people who would be good promoters of the MtG:O client don´t want to start playing there as they have to start over from scratch without the card collections they spend years building.

Hearstone is new and everyone starts at zero.

Then again if we should argue about size... They have Darkfall on the site... =P

This have been a good conversation

Blizzard knows how to advertise to gamers, that's why.

Anything blizzard does is news, so this site reports it. Hold a lame 5 day long everyone post in this thread for free beta hand outs, so the site gets thousands of hits and they'll help hype the crap out of your game. ( notice the two biggest attention grab words in gaming )

Smart, effective marketing from a popular brand name pretty much assures most gamers are going to know about it. Being new and what everyone is talking about means gamers are going to want to try it.

It's not an accident blizzard became huge and everything they touch poops money out of it.

Wow - I seriously laughed at this one.

Freedom of speech doesn't apply oh any private forum - they can ban you for saying that MtG is better than Hearthstone and they are in full right to do that.

Second, competition might be a good thing from your perspective but if it is not good from perspective of MMORPG they don't have to do it and guess what they don't have to explain themselves to anyone. Also your idea of healthy is your opinion that is not always shared by others.

Last - as someone who played MtG for well over 15 years both physical and online as well having played hearthstone - there is one core difference. In hearthstone I can actually collect every card without spending a single penny (difficult - yes, but doable), in MtG that is impossible.

Most of the MtG community comes from table top and only fraction of that play online. While all of the Hearthstone plays online. Either way it is up to MMORPG - but they are in the business of making money, if there was enough demand I am sure they would do it but clearly there isn't.

Seriously, that is just one more out of the many CCG's that show up on a weekly basis. Comparing this with a Blizzard game is like comparing a local football club with Real Madrid.

I am not even talking about the quality of mechanics, just looking at the art and general overview that's the 14th in a dozen.

I could cite 28 other games but be realistic.

Hearthstone is based on an MMO.

The people that visit this site like MMOs.

Simply put, they get more traffic for having it than not.
