Im looking for PvP based fantasy mmorpg, so I can have some fun with. Please share your thoughts with me (dont flame) just give a title(s) and say few words. Im considering:
WoW (thou I dont know how PvP works there),
Everquest 2 (yes, they are planing to introduce PvP here as well),
DAoC (now struggling with trial download),
Guild Wars (was nice, but I prefer open PvP, not arena type).
What is your opinion about those. Any other games I should consider?
Thank you for your help.
Comments
DAoC has several balance problems to work out. The PvP there is quiet possibly the best ONLY if you have a group of friends/players to play with.
If you're going at it alone, WoW. Its fun when you're not waiting in queues for hours on end, hehe.
I can't comment on EQ2, for obvious reasons - the game itself was alright.
Didn't like Guild Wars, the game nor the PvP. Sorry.
Shadowbane sounds like 'twill fit you perfectly, open PvP, other stuff, and more stuff. However, it isn't exactly hugely popular, but the biggest server (vindication) does have a lot of big battles. It's based around siege warfare, killing other people, and taking their stuff.

No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
DAoC is the best pvp with RvRvR combat, just remember to pick the class that owns legions of the other classes; then pvp will be fun.
Ohh ya I forgot about FungWan Online, but thats a grind-fest.
World of Warcraft and Dark age of camelot are faction vs faction.
a game that would also be good to consider is Lineage 2, it has ffa pvp
www.lineage2.com for more info
Well, looks like it leaves me 4 choices:
WoW
Everquest 2
DAoC
Shadowbane
I have already played WoW and EQ2 on theirs very beggining (there was no PvP at that time) and thats why I quit - no PvP. Now I'll try again WITH PvP. As for DAoC and Shadowbane from what I've heard they are classics amongst PvP so its a must.
Thx ppl
Btw, curse on you carebears
Carebears?!?
Will someone please make a fantasy CS/Unreal mod so these fanboys will stop ruining good MMOs?
MMO's cannot survive without competitive PvP. The only other alternative generally acceptable is raiding and even collecting piles of Epic gear gets old after a while. PvP does not ruin games or game balance; half-assed implementation does that.
Well, first off it was a tongue in cheek comment, and secondly, my beef isn't PvP, it's people who think PvP is all there is to MMOs and those who don't PvP 24/7 are pansies (or carebears for the PC).
Hope that holds off the other ultraserious comments that might have otherwise been forthcoming. Sheesh lighten up a bit.
1. Ultima Online (Pre-trammel)
2. Shadowbane
3. Tibia ()
4. Dark Age Of Camelot
shadowbane pvp is best out there
I would have to say Eve Online.
heh, just kidding, best fantasy pvp game would definitely be UO for me but since that has turned into the biggest pile of putrid crap in mmo history ill have to go with WoW since thats pretty much the only fantasy mmo ive played in the past 3 years or so.

Hello.
mmmm sorry i cant help and tell you whats a good pvp mmo.. but i cant tell you which one isnt, and which you should never come near though its open grounds pvp.......... RUNESCAPE... dont ever go next to that waist of time...
what do you mean guildwars has arena battle... like in final fantasy.. ?
I would have to go with WoW on a PvP server. I dont know it was one of the only games where I actually saw the other side as an enemy and you would always be getting reports of a Night Elf running through the Barrens or what ever it was called lol. Full Open PvP no limits and a never ending suply of players to fight. Pluss You couldnt understand what the other side was saying which only fueled the fire of hate.
I play EQ2 now and I would have to say the PvP action is ....... limited to say the least although it looks like a PvP Server is coming to solve our PvP woes so Hurray Down with Qeynos Long Live Freeport
hehe Gotta hand it to the guy who said UO before Trammel those were Fun times for sure. I remember the Bountys set on people so there got to be big time hunts after them to collect it hehe. Damn do I miss UO and Fel although I remember now that my main was a crafter and those damn Theifs kept stealing my Damn Ore all more Hard Work. and the No Draw tiles ehhhh now worth millions but they used to drop off Mogbats hehe Im rambling it was to much fun
PvP can be hell and I know for a fact that if you want to have an open PvP system where there are factions and they can battle anywhere in the game you will always get sides with more people and other then force people to join the other side there is nothing you can do. Point and Case WoW on most Servers Alliance outnumbers the Horde big time. On my old server it was somthing insane like 5 to 1.
EQ
FFXI
Just two titles that have thrived for YEARS with no competitive PVP
Mind you, I prefer games with PVP in them. But your statement is stupid.
Now, as to the OP's question:
DAOC is, hands down, the best Fantasy MMORPG on the market with PVP. Old UO was better but unless you're planning to play a Free, player run, Shard old UO is long gone. I think there are a couple decent sized player run shards out there, Metropolis was one, if it's still up.
Personally I love DAOC's blend of PVE and PVP.

Everquest 2 is coming out with PvP servers in January.
It is really the best game I have played
The new EQ2, better than ever befor !

I've just started DAoC trial on PvP server, but its tooooo much PvP, basicly is JUST PvP, its complete chaos ppl fighting everyone everywhere. I need PvP in an mmorpg but not JUST PvP, 30% of PvP would be enough. The perfect solution will be (I hope) PvP in EQ2.
Obadno>>> how do you know that it is on January
Because of this
"
Player vs Player
PvP has been a topic we've been discussing quite a bit on the team for the past few months, and it's time we start talking about it openly.
While it's true that we wanted to focus purely on PvE for the launch of EverQuest II, PvP has always been a direction that we've wanted to expand into when the time was right.
We've had a number of ideas for ways we could introduce PvP. Some weeks ago, we ran a poll on the boards asking what kind of action would interest people the most. The majority indicated they'd first want to see us bring PvP to separate servers containing a distinct ruleset.
One of the potential plans that we were fond of fit well with that sentiment, and we've been expanding on it for the past few weeks.
We think it's the best choice for EverQuest II, and we're glad to see that most everyone agreed. After all, EverQuest II has the perfect setting for it. A post-cataclysmic world with factions bitterly divided. Qeynos vs Freeport . Good vs Evil. We couldn't ask for a better setting for this kind of gameplay.
Expect more details to surface soon in the PvP Forums. For now, here are some of the concepts we've been developing:
Stay tuned to the forums in the coming weeks for more information on both the ruleset and how you can help playtest it on the PvP beta server.
It's time to heat up the cold war."
Thats How... BUt that isnt ware they stated mid January, but they did state Mid january some ware but can find it lol here is the link fr details on other stuff.

HMMMM someone needs to post when this goes live because I may very well re-activate my account for this. Looks very cool. I'm a bit concerned with how they're going to deal with level differences since they aren't going to use a 'frontier' type of approach and are instead putting it to "PVP everywhere". Because a level 60 will flat out obliterate a level 20 or 30 player.

One of the devs said it would be out mid January but no oficcial live date has been given just in the coming weeks so that usually would mean Jan or Feb.
Most likely it will be like eq1 ware you can attack like 5 levels in either direction. So a 60 cant kill a lvl 15
And as stated in the anouncement only one is exchange enabled..meaning that the normal wont let transfers and that everyone will start on an even playing field.

PvP over time can be broken down into 3 groups, ones who love it, ones who hate it and ones who like it but only with certain restrictions. and pretty much games have taken up this same overall idea.
WoW, DAoC, EQ2 (soon), CoH/CoV (Supposedly?), Guild Wars - All these have the restricted PvP, these cater mainly to those that like to PvE for the most part but has a twist of pvp interaction. All of these have more in-depth reasons and things to do when it comes to PvP.
But personally I feel that WoW has had the right mix for me. Where you can do all the PvE stuff and then later on at least from lv 30+ you can end up running into the enemy and have a few fights from time to time. But by simply running up into the enemy terretories you can pick a fight anytime you want pretty much. DAoC and its RvR got old to me fairly quick because its the same old, same old after awhile. i'm sure they have made some updates and such. But i'm too stuck in WoW to want to check it out. WoW has verious battlezones and such to do stuff in and more to come around the corner.
CoH/CoV, I know the CoH side has the arena thing and with the addition of CoV there is supposed to be some sort of thing where the Villians can build an evil domain of some sort and the heroes are supposed be able to come and fight the villians in some way. Not sure of it all becuase i haven't taken the time to check it out. I know it is a bit sci-fi or futuristic but it also has fantasy elements because you can litterally make your hero into anything from fantasy to futuristic.
But as for open, FFA PvP you have Shadowbane, Lineage 2, Asheron's Call on its PvP server, EQ1 on one of its servers, EQ1 also has faction based as well. The best of these to me would be Shadowbane, especially with its new server Vindication where you have a slight amount of restriction to where you can only form up with a specific guild sect. But the only races truely restricted are the elves and half giants everyone else has a lot more freedom. And of course it has its other servers that are open to anything.
But overall the best pure PvP experience IMHO is Shadowbane. Because you can build castles and such and litterally rule the land. It has a lot of aspects that allow for RTS style PvP. Lineage 2 of course is no different than any other FFA PvP that has ever come out. You are highly restriced on character design overall, I guess those koreans like to keep things simple when it comes to games. But its pretty much cut and dry.
Asheron's Call has been renowned for its pvp server for a long time. The open skill based system is fun and the fact when you fight magic/ranged vs melee, the melee can litterally dodge the magic or arrows. It has a large amount of player skill aside from the character that is required to be good. AC is made up into Clans/guilds and they pretty much rule specific areas it has its own underlined political battle going on. But nevertheless it is unrestricted pvp. Although a bit outdated on the graphic side but it is fun.
just my 2c, hope it helps
Erase WoW from your mind, the pvp there stinks. You get to kill the other faction that is it, no looting, no equip damage, & raid is just the pointless PvP on a large scale. A raid party can't even take over a town & take it for their faction. WoW is as carebear as you can get while still having PvP.
