What's up with the game ratings on the game list?

maimeekraimaimeekrai Member UncommonPosts: 256

FFXI comes out at 8.7 and everything that was 8.0+ is now rated 7.0???

Is this graded on a curve?

Good question, does seem kind of weird to me.

There are only 10 types of people in this world.
Those that understand binary and those that don't.

Technology is dominated by two types of people: those who understand what they do not manage, and those who manage what they do not understand. -Putt's Law

Whats interesting is that when it was first rated it was 9.8 beating every other MMO (?!) so how are these calculated?

Essentially, several severe fan boys (and anti-fanboys will do the opposite) posted how wonderful the game was prior to its release. Even though I am greatly anticipating my copy of FFXI, I will not rate it until I actually play =)

Just to add that those who have reviewed it i presume fall into two catagories,

    1)Played beta

    2)got it today

I would hope that the rating on any one game doesn't affect the others. Someone must be going in and downgrading the former high runners.

Is there a way to see how each voter voted? Maybe we need a little accountability on the voting. ( ie: joeblow put all 10's for his fave and voted all 1's for the current high runner. Filter joeblow's votes out for not being realistic...)

OR Maybe the averages should be calc'd with a function like TRIMMEAN() in Excel. This function allows you to filter out the noise by trimming a certain percentage of the highest and lowest values.

There is a curve algorythm applied.  Before we had the curve all games ranked pretty much the same and our ranks ranged from 6.5 to 7.2...pretty boring really.  It is a unique curve though, one that still allows a game to reach a 10 score (although highly unlikely)...it is not just a basic curve - there are many factors weighed in.

However, I think I need to add a feature that does not show a game until it reaches 50+ votes...

Once you see more votes come in for FFXI and other games it will smooth out...don't worry :)

Thanks for the explanation. Nice to see there was a little thought behind this. and yes having 10 votes or less on a game throw all the scores out of wack is a little weird...

On another related note regarding the game ratings.  Our curve system only move game scores UP....so all games are techinically benefitted from the curve (some more than others).  Their actual score is lower than it ends up being after the curve.

It has very few votes, most games that are anticipated get all hyped up and then seem to cool down a bit later when people accualy play the game image
