Using 'I dare you' tactics on MMORPG.com is bound to back fire in a spectacular way. Let me grab my pop corn.
Actually the biggest thread on the Repop forums is the SWG refugee thread not checked lately as I missed out on SWG as I was playing Eve at the time but 37 pages long and that was a while ago !!
Also the devs and most of the community volunteers were SWG players and some were very well known in the community at that time no other game comes close to the total open nature of early SWG,Repop is going to do it's best for all those SWG vets who want that same feeling from years back.
LOL ok, who were these 'well known' members? Just because a lot of people jump on a band wagon and pine for a long dead game with fond memories, saying this is the one, does not make it so.
Listen and understand. I HOPE with all my heart that The Repopulation is EVERYTHING the developers say it is going to be. I just does not strike me (from what I have read and seen) as anything like SWG. Not to me. Personally I thin comparing it to SWG is just wishful thinking. The SWG community was the most appealing thing about that game, most of it was a bugged mess if people are being honest. Which they won't be. Oh btw, I am a die hard Star Wars fan, and loved SWG. But honestly, it was a buggy mess. IS the Repopulation going to have heaps of bugs?
Anyway I want this game to be amazing, and I want it to deliver all it says it will, but until it is something I can play, they are not getting my cash. I don't care how many delusional people swear it is like SWG, or how many ex-swg players they have working for them.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
Love the concepts and the info has been very good provided.
But the tiny budget and 2nd kickstarter are where the big risks are and they're already delayed.
I pitched in for an indie mmorpg already so I'm done and waiting on returns on that. But the more indie mmorpgs funded the better. Plenty will crash and burn but one or two just might rise from the ashes and turn out to be awesome.
I normally avoid these types of threads. Someone linked this to me so I wanted to come in and give some quick information about the "Why a second kickstarter?" question. It's a valid question. I think in general people do need to do their research any time when they do a Kickstarter. I think there are a lot of good projects out there, and there's also a few bad ones that will hurt the reputation of others. There's nothing wrong with people being skeptical about a product they haven't personally played.
It's become commonplace now for crowd funded games to have an on-site shop. They all pretty much do that after their campaign ends, and for good reason. There is a demand for it. Players want those pre-order perks and want to help support products. Players ask for it, so sites support it. We began doing the same with our Early Adopter program for those very reasons. We received a steady dose of emails or posts by people who missed the Kickstarter and wanted to back the game.
This Kickstarter campaign is really about stretch goals. Those stretch goals are all features that either are requests on the web site or things that we personally had planned as post-launch goals. These get brought up and our answer has always been that we'd like to do it but probably don't have the resources to do them at launch, but that we'd squeeze them in if we could. These are all great features though that would enhance the game if we had the budget for them, but that wouldn't be worth delaying it for. Now we could have done a stretch goal system using an in-house store, but the problem is that if we want to guarantee something for launch it needs to start being worked on now. If we had a stretch goal on the site and it was reached 4 months from now, there would be no way we could get that into launch, there simply wouldn't be enough time.
Kickstarter fits well into that approach due to its short campaign window. It allows us to figure out what type of budget we'll have to work with and to lock down our features by the end of January. Any goals that aren't hit here become post-launch goals. So in our case, I'm not sure why people would find concern with a second Kickstarter. It began and we turned off our on-site shop. The difference between this and the in-house shop though is that it allows us to provide our players with a more accurate roadmap more quickly than we could otherwise, and the Kickstarter also helps expose the game to new players who may not have been aware of it.
One last comment on vaporware or pitching an idea. It should be noted that this game has been in testing for a while. It's been at three major shows, with playable versions on the floor at PAX Prime. Where most projects do enter Kickstarter as ideas looking to raise funding to build the game, this is already a developed product. Every single feature on that Kickstarter feature list is already functional in alpha testing.
Is it worth taking a chance on? That's really up to the end user. I can understand people being hesitant. There's nothing wrong with that. But I hope this post clears up a few questions.
Yeah... Because non-combat profs worked soooooo well in SWG that it is a solid selling point... Oh wait.. They did not unless they directly provided for combat.
But since you said it is funded i see no reason to put any money in to it until it releases.
Also it is you know... Not Star Wars...
But i will take your advice and let my money speak... About 6-8 months after the game is released when it is clear if this is worth playing or not.
Actually they were great and had a big selling point on the game... not sure what SWG you played but obv. not the one I was playing if you believe otherwise.
"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"
I'm quite interested in Repopulation, but I'm not sure if it will be a game I would actually play. That's mainly due to the PVP aspect, as I can't figure out how much of an impact that would have on my playstyle. In SWG I was a full-time independant crafter. I played from launch until the NGE, and in those years I never even did any (either ?) of the dungeons in the game. I was too busy surveying and collecting resources, making manufacturing BP's and keeping my client list updated.
If the "best" and/or "rare" resources in Repop will mostly be found in PVP zones, then the organised guilds will control those resources, which usually doesn't bode well for independant crafters.
I generaly don't do kickstarters because there's no warrant for my money. And while giving money through a Kickstarter is esentially the same as giving a few coins to a beggar on the street, I don't really look at it the same way.
Since I aproach it from a standpoint of sort of an investment, I just can't dig into throwing (away) money into pure ideas presented on an internet page. If I really wanted to do that I'd want more warranty.
Which I essentially get in the case of Repopulation today. You can see a lot of work already, game is nearing it's final year of development so it's far far away from backing up just ideas.
And it's why I don't exactly get people howling how giving money to Repop at this point is bad, all while just recently throwing money in Kickstarters selling only pure ideas.
And for the record I'm not trying to convince anyone to give them money. But what I'll state next is as close as it gets to facts, and that is Repop currently being number 1 sandbox to come in near future, meaning if you're one of those crying about the sea of themeparks, or bad indy developers like AV or SV (who kind of missed their chances) or maybe just someone who likes to preorder, than this is a good time to do it.
Why do people feel that Kickstarter means the game is held to a higher standard then one which is / was privately funded?
Probably for the same reason that an established developer is held to a much higher standard than an 'indie' is.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
the game is very ambitious, hopefully this company can do a good job since they already made a big mistake by using Hero Engine for such a massive project.
SWG Vet here. I backed Repop a while back... on the very first day I learned about it. Anyone who loved the original SWG should spend a little time researching this game.
The developers are very involved in the discussion forums and are open to ideas and feedback. They are well organized and it's very clear that they are giving serious thought about all aspects of their designs. They're an indy company which means that they don't need to conform to any expectations from parent companies, marketing "gurus" or senior managers. They should get support from any who appreciate this.
How come SWG vets don't kickstart a campaign to buy the SWG rights and just run their own server? Why bother with clones when you can have the real thing?

SWG Vet as well here and I miss SWG pre NGE a lot and wish I could travel back in time kill John Smedley in 2005, impersonate his persona and lead SOE back to old glory.
I don't see how Repop is anything near SWG, it doesn't have the story nor the feeling of SWG.
I don't see CH's with 2 oversized Teddy Bears tearing noobs appart.
I don't see ppl partying up into gigantic masses, hunting gigantic beasts and all you see is shacking display with a crap full of colored particles and all u hear is "tchew tchew tchew, dssschh, booom, pewpewpew, zoom zooom zooom".
All these classes, races, weapons, animations, freedom, jeezus the game was just so huge for that time it's impossible to come anywhere close 10 YEARS after that beast has seen light.
Repop offers nothing to me that I would enjoy on long term, so I leave it totally.
look at the pledge offers 350$ for a spot of a house on the pve server? screw you
250$ for a custom npc? screw you
350 DOLLARS!!! i should be able to buy a freaking SOLAR SYSTEM that I can completely customize for that money.
If they'd be making an SWG2.0 it should be 5x better then what SWG was in 2003, you should be able to dominate entire star systems with RNG created planets and even galactic sectors for huge alliances. I wanna go over your place and punch you right in the face with my TKM/DOC same as i want to hunt down all your peoples capitol ships in space right before fighting in heavy planetary ground warfare as soon as your planet's shields are down, capturing your ressources and selling them to intergalactic traders and finish with a smoke at the VIP room of an intergalactic known disco with awesome music and live dancers.
That's what SWG 2.0 has to offer at least to even be proposed as successor.
The repop and another green light and another kick starter.... and still in alpha... no thanks!! This game is a whole lot of hype and nothing to show for it other than a "few" videos and even fewer testers!!
Best bet, wait for Star Citizen or Wildstar for a good space genre game... The Repop had its chance and now just fails before it even gets started!!

I put my $ down early on but honestly doubt I'll ever see the game in any form Alpha and beta included. Supposedly the game is in Alpha with Beta due in March but I think this game is headed down the same path that Greed Monger took.
I have come to believe that most Kickstart projects are a waste of money with a lot of them being nothing short of scams.
350 DOLLARS!!! i should be able to buy a freaking SOLAR SYSTEM that I can completely customize for that money.
As long as gamers are willing to spend literally thousands of dollars just to own a few different ship models, devs would be rather dumb not to try earn money this way. I know should's and shouldn'ts are easy to throw out but it's actually the gamers (consumers) who dictate this.

Well, that's very true, you can't really victimize the willing, if people wish to spend their money this way, and at this level, might as well be to development houses that could actually result in new and different game play designs.
Not a former SWG vet, and while I've backed one Kick-starter, that was for huge nostalgia reasons of my own mostly, not because it felt any sort of logical in doing so.
The PVP model here might hold me back from playing, if it's well thought out and controlled (such as EVE) I'll give it a try, but the more like MO/DF:UW it is, the less likely it will be a game that I will play.

Are there actual melee classes or is everyone running around with some sort of gun all the time? This is the issue i have with sci-fi MMO's of any kind despite being a huge fan overall. I just don't think they work as MMO's without mixing in large elements of fantasy like Star Wars does. Not counting EVE of course because it's not avatar driven.
When every combat class is running around shooting everything from range, it bores the hell out of me instantly. Just my preference of course as i'm sure lots of people enjoy that but there's nothing romantic about a gun as there is about a sword.

Every Kickstarter as well as Public Television pledge drive has these ridiculous top tiers where what you get is not remotely worth what you pay. It's basically the "I'm rich and really want to support this and give me some cool little token for it." tier. If you can't afford it or don't want to pay that much just back at the basic tier like most people do.
