Being Competitive

In regards to late game content, how much gameplay time per week do you think should be needed to be able to stay competitive in whatever it is you're doing (be it raiding, PvPing, staying up on the economy etc.) in a MMORPG?

I personally think it should be around 20ish hours per week, not too casual and not too demanding.

I understand the idea of how many hours a game should expect a player to put in, but I've never thought of that in terms of competition.  I don't play an MMO to complete with other players.  I put time in to progress at my own goals (e.g. add to my mount collection) and to become more competent within the world (e.g. build up a high reputation with an individual NPC or NPC faction).  It really has no impact on me if other players are increasing their mount collections or NPC reputations faster or slower, and that's a great thing.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

Hmm, this is a pretty tricky one. There's a lot that goes into the equation. A lot of people in MMORPGs ( I feel ) tend to think that if they have 1,000+ members and only like 30 online at any given time, that they can blow through content, etc pretty easily, have all the top tier gear, etc in a snap and whatnot, it's kind of hard to measure what compensates for ' competitiveness ', it's different for all MMORPGs, I'd say.

    Take Shadowbane for example.

    Enough said.

I don't compete when I play MMOs.  If I'm having fun, I'm "winning". If I'm not, I'm logging out.
