Silkroad, what's the catch?

Well i'm really curious as why is this game free.  Aside from poor text translation of quests/skills/command sand just about anything else, this game can compete with top-notch games out there, yet it's "Free forever".  Graphics are a little lower then Lineage II, but defenitly better then WoW, and while similar to many korean games, their system is somewhat unique, much more fun then playing LineagII.  I really don't understand why is this game free....and is this game still in develpment?

no, its not really in development... its basically ready for release and full implementation.

its free forever, because they have an item shop... just like a lot of other asian games. Therefore, they make their money off morons who like to buy their items instead of earning them.

But... it seems to work, so who cares, right?

At level 10 you can buy a scarf at the npc for 500 or so, different color scarfs battle each other. (But people not in battle can heal you).
Level 20 has pvp so you can attack anyone you want but the penalty is huge for player killing (anyone kan kill you without penalty & you might drop items on death).

Level 20 is also the start for proffessions:
Traders: Lead a donkey with wares from one city to another city. Npc bandits spawn & try to kill you & your donkey/mule as level 1 trader. Level 2 trade runs can be attacked by other people playing as bandits.
Hunters: Kills player bandits (& protect traders but dont get any xp for protecting).
Bandits: Tries to kill the transport to loot the wares & then go to thief city to sell them to a npc.

The problem with proffessions is that there is no level limit or people limit. So if you are doing a level 2 trade you can get attacked by 5 level 30+ thiefs that can kill you & your transport in one hit.

It's not just only a difference about buying/earning the items you need or want. It's also a solution to the "problem" of buying gold or items through unofficial sites. And also a solution for the problem leading to that: the fact that some people DO NOT have enough time per week in order to get through this endless-hours-high-level-raids and enjoy the game in par with others.

And if this paying system works, why not? By the way, if you like challenge well... earn the rewards instead of buying them. No one forces you.

It's a corrupt philosophy, for a game developer to be selling in-game advantages directly. Just say no to all MMOGs that do this. A low monthly subscription plan is the way to go.

It ruins immersion, since the virtual wold is supposed to be separate from real world influences such as how much real money you are willing to spend to get ahead. Second hand market selling of coin/items which were legitimately earned in-game thru expended effort can't be stopped, but is preferable to game developers selling those same items directly, which have no connection to the in-game world or economy, since they were not originally derived from the game world.

Game developers who do this, are fostering an elitist system which defeats the reason many players enjoy MMOGs, that of competing on equal footing and being rewarded for in-game effort.

I was going to do a long post about why I disagree Jorev. Just don't feel like it though. I'll just say I totally disagree with you though.

if this is so, then tell me why would this game be free?
what does hackprotection have to do with the game beeing free or not?

What about people that have little time to play? If you think about it, they are still earning the items. They still have to work for that real life money. An elitist society? All societys have some sort of elitism. If there wasn't, nothing would get done. =

    LOL?

So basicly you are saying this piece of ugly crap

    image

    is "faaaaaar superior" to

    these

    Silkroad Online
    image
    image
    image

    Lineage 2
    image
    image

    Right?

Pretty sure you never played L2 nor SRO, but yes you are a WOW player. And you only saw L2 and SRO from some low quality bad screenshots. (which most SRO screenshots on this site are pretty bad imo).

But certainly you are making a pretty funny joke here claim something is completely opposite.

You guys are weird , saying one game has better graphics than another is
a matter of opinion!!! So dont go telling other people off as if they are stating it is a fact...

Some people prefer anime & cartoony over realistic while others
are in reverse. This is gonna be a endless debate , if your trying to force
the opposition to agree with you <.<

And to the OP, the game will have Cash Shop/Item Mall.
There is not really a catch , unless we can say you will be playing with
immature people. Or... the fact that the game is Silkroad and you may not like it.
IMO, the game is pretty decent once you join a guild and do pvping. But just like
any other MMORPG, you may be bored from time to time from the grinding.

ninjabeaver, you are gladly mistaking :) wether one game has better graphics than another is not a personal opinion, what you are talking about is the preference of use of graphics, 2 anime style games can seriously differ in graphics quality as well, anyway, Lineage 2 has a lot better graphical quality than world of warcraft, undenyable, the graphical quality, what those guys are talking about concern for exemple, the texture detail, the detail of enviroment, the amount of used pixels in a model, and you can not deny that lineage 2 has a serious amount of detail compared to World of Warcraft ... that's like someone saying "WoW has better graphics than F.E.A.R.!" and another one replied "personal flavor of graphics!", i'd have to kill them both :)

I have a tree, a tree that's in my garde, but my garden's too small for the tree, so the tree is in my house, that means i don't have a house .... who am i anyway?

Im sorry but you are wrong. The graphics in WoW are crap compared to other games. I am not talking about them, or style of graphics, im talking about overall graphical quality.

on top of that add the fact that when it comes to armor rendering and choice of armor color is non existant it makes wow graphics look like pacman.

    WoW
    GW

This doesn't help anything, you need to explain what you mean. I think I know where you're going however, and this is what I believe as well:

If people are going to buy items etc anyway, why not let the company make the money on it, and better still provide a free game for us?

Yeah, the means are kinda dark, but the ends are rather nice. In short, people with more money are always going to have the advantage, and yeah it's not cool that real world achievements effect the game (but no more, however, than say, intelligence), but it's a part of life.

Let's turn this "disadvantage" into an advantage and make more people happy.

    Cheers,

As long as I can get the item with hard work in game, I do not mind the gaming companies allowing others to buy the items in shops. People already do it now but are giving their money to someone other than the game designers. I will take a look at Silkroad and repost with real opinions of the game itself.

It seems they are not accepting new accounts as of 12/30/2005.

Please see link below for more details.

i do not recommend this game to anyone..I will list my reasons of good and bad..but bad first

    Why not to play Sro
    1. Quests majorly boring..They are all Kill this # of monsters, collect this many items unless u like doing that untill lvl 70 or w/e the max lvl is..have fun

    2. Major Lag(its still in beta but w/e)

    3. Lvling get to hard at a certain point whichmakes u haveto do those boring quests to lvl

    4.when gm's ban u they don't give u a reason..(yea they banned me..i didn't get a reply from them saying why i was banned, i even tried emailing them a couple times..)

    Why to play Sro
    1. Friendly people

    2. Graphics nice

    3. Lag is very good..if u like to spend ur time in towns..

    4. Fighting style is very unique..click monster>character atks monster>press skill>character use skill, very fun indeed...(Note: there was saracsim in this one if u didn't catch it..)

    5. ...is there anything else.i don't really think so..umm Lag very bad? WAIT for all u peverted kids out there, there was onc e a nude glitch! If u play this long enough u just might get another chance..
