Okay so after hearing about dayz and how awesome it is for years and now seeing what seems like hundreds of new survival games either coming out or being crowdfunded I want to take the plunge and try one of them out. The question is which do you find is the best and why? To make it easier for people who may have tried a few of them but don't want to explain what they like and why than I'll mention what I am primarily looking for in the hope they can still help me out with some information.
First of all I don't care if they aren't technically "Massively"MO but I atleast want an active persistent multiplayer experience.
I don't have any preference regarding theme.
I do care about the game involving more than just surviving hordes of zombies and other players though and in the least I would hope for a game that has a good crafting system even if it's only real use is to make yourself or others a better combatant. Just needing to forge and build to survive would be a huge plus though.
I prefer FPS games to action based games but FPS games in particular need some frame rates and low latency so I am mindful of that.
I'd prefer there to be progression even just via virtual assets such as gear or shelter or stockpile of food or whatever.
Lastly I want harsh death penalties. I'm not adverse to permadeath at all, especially in a survival type game.

imo Dayz is still the best survival multiplayer online out to date. There are many alterations to the original Dayz mod and they have everything from weapon crafting, to house/fort building, car making, etc, etc. on top of that it's basically a perma death game where all you do is try and stay alive by finding food and weapons and killing others before they kill you.
i really can't think of any other game that will have you die from thirst and hunger if you don't find/make food and water. i mean that's half of what Dayz is all about. find supplies, avoid players, kill zombies.
it doesn't get much more survival than that.
PS: if they get the Standalone game correct, and add all (or a good part) of the content that is in mods like Epoch, Origins, and such, it will be hands down the best survival mmo out to date.
The only two that I've personally tried, to be honest, are DayZ Mod / Standalone and Nether. I've considered trying RUST, 7 Days To Die, and a couple of others, but I ended up not going for it.
DayZ Mod is probably one of my all time favorite games in the world. From this game I've acquired many hours of gameplay and many different stories. In fact, I remember I've even played the game nonstop for 3 days straight, I was that intensely addicted (I've done similar things with other MMOs I've been interested in, but never to this extent).
DayZ Standalone takes DayZ Mod, and enhances it with better graphics, a much larger view distance, a completely superior and revamped UI system, and a few "new" mechanics like crafting and the ability to utilize items in multiple ways. While all of this is true and makes the game sound like it's superior to the Mod, it sadly isn't, at least not yet. The game currently lacks some of the key features that the Mod had, temporarily. Vehicles, animals, and the tent-system are all currently not implemented into the game, but they will be over time (how much time is still up for debate, especially since Rocket had announced what updates would arrive within the next couple of months, and the vehicles and tent-system weren't anywhere on the list). Chernarus is as big as ever, especially since it has a few extra additions to it compared to the Mod, so traveling long from one corner of the map to the other will indefinitely take hours on foot. Finding freshly spawned vehicles and even simply hearing an operational vehicle in the distance helped add to the thrill and excitement of the game. The lack of a tent-system makes storing one's stuff away for safe-keeping impossible, and it also makes hunting for other player's loot (a very fun feature) impossible as well.
Nether, to put it simply, is like DayZ but much smaller, with safe zones, and with actually "good" enemy AI. The safe zones are, in my opinion, a negative feature since players tend to camp around them and run away towards them to hold onto their loot. The enemies are called the Nether and there's multiple types of them with multiple abilities and attacks, they're interesting to deal with. The Nether are cool in that they're unpredictable, loud (so you can hear if they're attacking someone else and find out where other players are at), and provide experience towards the leveling system implemented into the game. Other than this, the game blows. Not a lot of weapon variety and dying in the game is more of a minor inconvenience due to the fact gear is rather easy to acquire.
Just started playing DayZ standalone myself and having quite a fun time. Though I fail quite a bit at the survival element and yes the game has bugs (alpha is alpha) but it has not stopped me from enjoying myself. I may play rust when it is later in development.
I can't say what is the best survival mmo as I have not tried all of them, but DayZ so far, would be a contender.
