[Column] General: Five Lessons MMOs Can Learn From DayZ

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

For the past few months I have heard all the hype surrounding DayZ. I have watched RipperX go on and on about how great it is. I saw the demos, watched a few videos, but still did not fully get the idea. Flashback a few weeks when the standalone became available on Steam and I decided to spend the money on the game to see what all of this talk was about.

Dayz is fun when you can find server that has starting shore that isnt camped by 120+ guys with sniper rifles.

I log on full servers all the time, this might happen 1 outa 5 spawns, plus spawn points are the most populated. It gets lonely real quick up north, unless you go to the hot spots like the airfield. I used to love runescape cause it had the wilderness, and was a thrill rolling with  lvl 70+ archers.

I really think DayZ might open a whole new genre in MMOs, NO levels, NO npcs, NO quests, permadeath and still have tons of replay value. Just give me a huge map to explore with enough game mechanics.

Thanks Rocket for flipping the table in the MMO genre.

Too bad DayZ requires a taste for zombie MMOs which I have zero interest in. Also DayZ isn't really an MMO to begin with. It's lobby based.

Yeah its just a taste though. You need a taste for survival and pvp elements to get the full enjoyment of this dish!

Everquest is the only MMO that got my heart racing the way DayZ does.  Dying in an MMO nowadays means next to nothing, so there is no incentive to not try to take on any mob in the game.  I always enjoyed not knowing exactly how tough a mob was, and death penalties being so harsh that you were extremely careful.  People so accustomed to the carebear world we live in today would complain about that to no end though, most likely.  AAA developers looking to make a cash cow aren't going to make a "hard" game that doesn't appeal to the masses who like everything being spoon fed to them.  Glad to see it in a more independently developed game like DayZ, though.  Dude is making millions off of this "simplistic" game.

To Me DayZ is still too restricted, can't do this and you can't do that, graphics are still too clumsy, you watch a stream for 20 mins and you have seen them all. I know it's still in beta and hopefully it will turn out great.

I just wish they could make these kinda games more realistec, you dont just run out and start killing everyone you see on first sight etc..

yeah, it is fun game for casual players, love  sandbox open world withouth restriction

... but hard to deal with ,,kill on sight,, players in new spawning areas ...

ok if KOS when I am good geared, but cmon ,just start with new  character & I am dead with empty pockets

brw. that alpha is more fun than some finished product in genre

rust is way better and they have only been working on it a fraction of the time they have been working on dayz

I'm Here. I'm Awesome. Get Used To It.

This is pretty subjective.  I think both games can co-exist and be successful.  Having more choices is always a good thing.

The List : Eight Lessons MMO's should NOT learn from DayZ:

1 - Lets charge people to buy a game client that is in pre Alpha stage, unfinished, bugged, very unstable, and very very badly programmed. (Simply saying its in pre alpha stage is not good enough)

2 - Make a game with an engine created NOT this century

3 - Release the game with clunky as **** controls and collision technology and subject the public to it

4 - Only have one objective in the whole game

5 - People should die who fall off the bottom step when it's essentially a perma-death game (seriously this like takes one line of code to fix, as far as I can see there have been 4 updates since I bought it. Where the **** is my money going???)

6 - A single punch to the head is a valid reason to make you unconscious for long enough that the other person can loot all your belonging and be half way across town before you come to..

7 - Let it take 30+ shovel swings to the head to kill a zombie, with very badly coded collision technology and frustrating clunky graphics.

8 - Annoy the play base by letting them find water to drink,  drink 15 bottles to quench your thirst then find that 30 seconds later your dying of thirst again (serious wat da f***????)

    This list is so true.

  • HatefullHatefull Member EpicPosts: 2,503

Tried it, too much bad to list.  Just a huge waste of time right now.  It may get 'better' that is to say something approaching an acceptable level of completion but there are several MMO's of this genre already being produced that are light years ahead of this garbage.  Imo.

Stay away, this game is a great lesson in what not to do.  It has been worked on for how many years now?

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

What do you mean no non player characters? zombies are non player characters.

    @ Razeekster:

plus some hackers at every spawn would make a best adrinaline rush for sure.

Nice try OP this is not the way to convince people to pay for a game wich can't restore you after being killed by a hacker/s.

    The List: Answered

    1. Its Alpha. How many free alpha's you been a part of and its up to the player.

    2. Game engine is fine, there are just a lot more snazzy ones out now.

    3. See #1

    4. Not dying....yep thats pretty much a constant, in EVERY game.

    5. Old people fall and die from bottom step daily, it could happen especially with a big axe or gun strapped to your back ;)

    6. I could probably knock you out with one punch.

    7. I agree, shovel is useless.

    8. Quit running everywhere. And carrying a camping pack full of heavy shit and not getting thirsty is silly. This works, play the game properly.

Word of advise! if you realy want to buy this game in a future? don't wait till price go up, buy but don't play it. till it gets better.

  • DocBrodyDocBrody Member UncommonPosts: 1,926
Going to buy this right now. I have been desperate for a carebear-free MMO for a long time
  • BruceYeeBruceYee Member EpicPosts: 2,556

IMO, 3 things I think they should change.

    1. Spawning in the middle of nowhere. I spend 20-30 minutes trying to get to higher populated areas.

    2. Spawning w/o weapons or lack of firearms to prevent me from defending myself against spawn ganks. Bring back the makarov.

    3. Faster server reset times.

DayZ sells because it is a sandbox type game with no hand holding. The alpha version  has sold over 800k so far. Notice I said alpha version. This is a big sign for mmo devs to stop making every mmo for casuals.

Logged on, ran around for an hour and found a pink ball cap and some sticks. Oh, and ripped jeans. Don't forget the ripped jeans.

Zombies can walk right through walls, so if your seen by one, just stay and fight. You ain't getting away. That's if you can find any.

I'll wait a few months and see if there's any improvements.  Although I doubt we'll see any until we stop seeing videos of the devs bragging about their new Porsches, and then actually getting back to work.

it already has. unfornately they are all games about guns and zombies. what I really want is all of those things in a medieval sandbox.

If you play it by yourself or for more then a few days, it looses its charm quite fast..
