The biggest learning curve is getting the tactics down. As far as playing the game, there isn't much of a learning curve at all. Normal keyboard/mouse movement. Pretty easy actually.
I would say it's not "that" easy as it might look on he first view. There is "more" behind that, when it comes to Angles/Penetration/Knowledge/Viewsystem and so forth. So, it will keep you busy a bit, thats for sure
In low Tier battles thats not a bigie, but when you progress to the Mid/High Tiers, thing will become very interesting.
Give it a shot, you will not regret it. Also i would suggest, get a 1 month Premium, and have fun. Its worth it.
Also this game is the definition of pay to win, you can buy more damage with money.
So not true.
First off, you can buy it via ingame money.
Second, it is NOT a "must have", by far not.
Third, and learn here mate, you buy Penetration, NOT dmg. Both shells have the same dmg
But if you have skill, you dont need Prem Ammo tho.
Ah...and one thing which you can see in the posting above; You will allways have a good bunch of whiners ingame. Mostly pplz which not understand how things work.
The biggest learning curve is that each tank has its own learning curve. For me it boils down to a few key roles.
Are you fast?
Are you heavily armoured?
How accurate is your gun?
Each tank is played a little differently. The categories I've made up are sniper, meatshield, ambush, scout.. All tanks are a combination of 1 or more of those things.
I play heavy tanks and tank destroyers. The German tank destroyer I play is a very snipery vehicle where as the American TD my friend plays is more of an ambush vehicle.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

There is no more pay to win since they let you buy gold rounds with credits. So there's absolutely no argument for pay to win. None. There is NO ARGUMENT they can make which can make pay to win true no matter how much they want to say it is pay to win.
Some people are just incapable of discovering the subtle differences between the vehicles. I can't blame them. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn game systems beyond 'point and shoot'. Our game is better off without the ignorant.

If you want to be successful at higher levels with a variety of tanks, then you'll need to spend money. Before you get to higher levels though the gold rounds don't matter. Situational awareness and picking your targets is far more important than anything else. The money you spend for the larger class of tanks at higher levels doesn't negate the need for situational awareness and picking the right targets though, it's more of a pay wall kind of thing. You're not paying to win, you're paying to compete.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I'll definitely pay that. It was a while before I spent money on WoT but I felt that the time spent and enjoyment warranted my cash. Getting more slots is fairly important for higher tiers. I am completely ok with buying more slots though.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
I find that the learning curve on this game is not too bad, but it can feel a bit rough on the skill end at times when you are first starting out. You have to play it with a mindset of learning what not to do, as in my experience acting rashly is often a recipe for a quick death.
This game is a patience, position, and timing shooter, so don't try to play it like an action guy unless you are in a fast light tank in the lower tiers. I have an elite M3 that I use at tier three that is very fast and maneuverable, and needs to blast around at 62. Other than that it's best to get hull down or around a building and pop out for shots while the enemy reloads.
Learning the tanks is important, so if you like the WWII period and vehicle identification you will do well.
One of the other things that kind be kind of a bitch is the visibility system. It's not based on what you would actually see, but instead has a mechanic. A tank will become visible when your crew can see it per the mechanics of the game. So a tank can be in the open but if it isn't moving and is a Tank Destroyer (they get a better chance to hide) the damn thing will be invisible ... completely.
So sometimes you can get killed by tanks that you don't even see.
Also this game is the definition of pay to win, you can buy more damage with money.

What these two said. There is no pay to win. That this poster wrote that only shows he has no understanding of the game and how it works.
To the OP it is like people are saying, very very simple to learn the basics and play it. But much harder to master it especially as you get higher in tiers. It hits a point you really need to have at least some basic knowledge about every single other vehicle in the game. Have an idea what their pen/dmg is like and their armor and where to aim on various vehicles. Who to engage, who not to engage, when to fall back, when to charge forward, when to spot for others, when to move with others, when to go flank, when to.... There is a lot to it if you like PvP MOBA then you may like it.
Game matchmaking has been broken for the last 2 releases and the game has deteriorated over time since the 6.x days due to a variety of factors.
Learning curve is a misnomer - each class of tank (light, medium, heavy, tank destroyer, SPG) has its own. And within each class you also must figure out what that tank's role is (sniper, brawler, flanker, scout, 1st or 2nd line, support only, etc). So the "learning" never ends.
Matches are very lopsided with 1-15, 2-15 etc scores very common anymore. RNG can and will make perfectly aimed shots miss or bounce or do zero damage. Tanks cloak and decloak right in front of you thanks to a nonsense vision system.
Then there is Wargamming. 1) They have an axe to grind re: Germany and take pleasure in nerfing German tanks while making many Soviet tanks OP (such as the SU 122-44). One of their devs, Serb, has no regard for the player base and refers to players with insults and derogatory statements. Customer service is pure garbage.
Pay to Win exists in full force, and a lot of the things in-game (grinding modules, grinding new tanks, training crew etc) is done in a way to "incent" you to buy premium account and/or tanks. There is also the perception that doing so will make the game more fun and make you a better player, but that's all smoke and mirrors.
Do yourself a favor - wait for War Thunder tanks to come out. WG and WOT are pure garbage at this point.
Also this game is the definition of pay to win, you can buy more damage with money.
thing is though if you suck at tactics you can drop all the money in the world into the game and you will still die repeatedly to the better players. My first couple of weeks I dumped money into store tanks and gold ammo and I still sucked at the game so my money was wasted. Now I switched back to playing my level 1 - 4 tanks stock and I am learning the tactics. Put a newbie and a vet into the same tanks and give the newbie gold ammo and the vet will still win 99.9% of the time and I define newbie as anyone with less than 5000 games. I am in awe of the guys who go out and get 5 - 10 kills a game when I am happy with 2 or 3 and my best is 4.
As far as the curve goes I was a damn good UT and Quake player and this is a whole new ball game for me. Tactics strategy, learning the maps little things like shoot and move, battle positions versus fighting positions, hull down, turret down, key holes etc are just starting to sink in and I still suck major compared to the guys with 10,000 plus battles under their belts which is why I am sticking to playing tier 1- 4 right now with no store tanks and no gold ammo.
Only thing I am paying for now is the premium account which gives me 1.5 X credits and exp, I still have some of that gold ammo on my tier 5 and tier 6 tanks but I am not even playing those at the moment and when I do it be reserved for when I can't get a green penetration indicator using the cheap stuff
Matches are very lopsided with 1-15, 2-15 etc scores very common anymore. RNG can and will make perfectly aimed shots miss or bounce or do zero damage. Tanks cloak and decloak right in front of you thanks to a nonsense vision system.
On e thing I have noticed is that those lopsided games are due to player stupidity. Me and a TD were the only two tanks left last night against 5 tanks on other side. I had a damaged engine, 20% of my HP left at that stage of the game. We somehow won the game. By acting as a team he got 3 of them I got 2. Our other 13 players decided to play stupid and died in the first 2 minutes of game by.
On that note though I do wish the match system would take player ratings into account , but of course that might mean waiting 5 minutes for a game to form upo.
And on the Warthunder I would not expect much. If their tanks are like their planes expect some very lopsided tanks.
As far as waiting goes give WOT a try, it's free so nothing to lose except the DL bandwidth. I expect most traditional MMO player to really hate it anyway, this is not a easy game
I still absolutely hate the system though. Invisible tanks are the worst idea that WG has had, with SPGs being a close second. It's only purpose is to give the illusion of a larger battlefield (which it fails at) and to prevent artillery from decimating everything.
Personally, I feel they should remove the spotting system from everything except for artillery. Tanks would always be visible to other tanks, but artillery would have to wait for someone to light targets up on the SPG's circa 1940's satellite view.
I agree 100% . Makes me mad as hell when a tank I cant even see takes me out just because he is out of my "view range" . I have started grinding up binoculars for all my tanks and grinding all my crews to 100% before I move up a tier. Hey its a long grind but then so is lvling and equipping a toon to max in any MMO
I started playing the game back in may of last year. Still learning the game. It can make you rage at the monitor or laugh at it the next match.
Because of its ability to randomly place you in battles against 29 other people, you have 14 teammates but are really trying to also get the better of them, you may end up with the most skilled teammates ever combined or the dregs of tankdom.
There will be games where it'll be your final play, the last shot of the game, that will earn you praise or the noob label from your team.
Yea, its high, dont let these other posters fool you.
To explain how the spotting and view range works, mechanics wise:
Each tank has several individual spotting points on it where it will look through, hence being able to spot while only peaking the front of the tank and not the turret out etc.
Regardless of View Range, you can NOT spot beyond 425 meters. The game does no check for it beyond that range. What that means is this: View Range is the range you can see spotted tanks by other players.
View Range and the ability to spot are modified by various skills and modules modified by an opposing tanks camo values. So in theory you could be 300 meters away but if you have 310 View Range and it is a Russian TD (some of the best camo values in the game) modified by the camo skill and net, you wouldn't be able to see them without the appropriate mods and perks.
MM isn't broken. That guy likely doesn't understand and never bothered to read the post detailing the system. Likely played lights and complained that he got Scout MM.
If you have any other questions about mechanics feel free to ask, and if you want help or need a platoon to learn message me and I can give you my in game name.
