I've heard alot about the killing of Star Wars Galaxies by the clueless corporate's at Sony. I'm pretty dissapointed that they ruined what could have been my ultimate fantasy online game before I've even had a chance to play it. I'm a pretty huge Star Wars fan, as well as an onling gamer, and I was about ready to give SWG a try, but I was consitantly reading comments on how bad the game was becomming, and their latest publish has put me off of the game entirely. I'm not about to invest thousands of hours in a game only to have what I've earned be radically nerfed because kiddies can't compete.
Lucas Arts should take over and make their own MMORPG. Sony, EA, and any other huge corporations will just run any dynamic game into the ground with decisions and changes based on bottom line greed. If LucasArts would only build a MMORPG based on the engine and style of Knights of The Old Republic, the world would beat a path to their door. Great graphics, reasonable system requirements, endless customizeability, a great questing setup, and most importantly, a huge galaxy with very detailed quests based on highly detailed npc conversational trees would make such a game incredible.

Thing those people seems to forget is SWG bad or good is a huge franchise just like warcraft and it has proven on many occasions to have a high turnover of people.
I personally think the changes made numerous times are just too dramatic but hey lets face it the current crowd of people moaning were not even there at launch or ran away in first few months to return later when jedis opened up.
At launch were the guys like me who wanted few jedis or NONE even and rather have the storyline preserved. Most who were keen on been jedi left after a few months not because of bugs but because they could not open the slot.
Then SoE let in the way for jedis and many flooded in and those of us unhappy on the jedi madness and death of story left.
This current crop will be replaced again by another group who got fed up of grinding jedi and other types who want a FPS feel to the game. Then the game will change again and new crop will arrive.
So though not in SWG for a while ,i think it will continue to have a high turnover of players as has happened in past.
Other games...Mostly to EQ2 though alot of them fear soe now......... WoW mostl likely, going to ware the population thinking things like "it cant be that bad"
OOOOO but it is...it si....

Thing that they should have done was instead of destroying the original SWG, Destroying all the cool classes and player toons that worked on these classes for years just to empliment a new system of game play. They should have went with a new game studio like Pandemic ( still wish they would make Mercenaries MMOG) and create the first StarWars MMOFPS. I never cared for the combat when the game went live and i dont care for it now. I mean what fun is there shooting at a big blue frickin square.....
Wheres the head shots wheres the leg shots wheres the bloodspray etc etc. None there, just aim at blue square and hold down mouse button and wait.
If you have played many FPS games, you've seen that StarWars fans have always moded them to be like Starwars. The Battlefield series is a great example. The fps gamers are the main fan base of StarWars.
And that not just because its the biggest market of gamers on a PC either. The reason is most feel that StarWars is best as a FPS. And their right it is. Games with guns are best played in First person. Even melee is more realistic in First person.
Just my Opinion, i understand not all feel as i do and thats fine.
Hope i spelled all that right since im using foxfire and it has no spellcheck available on the forum for that browser. Hope that changes in the future.
Anyhow
later.

It would be near impossible to use an existing game engine turning it into an mmo and expecting the system requirements to be minimal. The reason why games like Knights of the Old Republic looks so good is because they don't need all the content, full 3d views, and be able to draw 1k lead characters at the same time. Also calculating real-time damage with a twitch based system can be almost impossible for a server to calculate; especially with lag.
While there's no hard fact to back this up, I think Lucas Arts had a LOT to do with the changes. See, Lucas Arts gives SOE the license to run SWG, and ALL changes must go THROUGH LA for approval. Also, LA is allowed "creative input" for SWG. I VERY HIGHLY think that LA looked at the subscriber numbers, then looked at the forums and saw people whining about various "issues" with the game and "suggested" that SOE make it into an action game instead, to try and milk more money from the game. As I said, I have no hard proof. No quotes, nothing. But if you look carefully around, you'll see I speak the truth about the licensing, and some of the other things will fall into place after that.
If you want an old SWG-esque game, give project entropia a chance. Stiffer system reqs, but all in all, pretty similar imo.
Sorry if this is going to come off like a rant but all you SOE bashing SWG refugees need to understand that SOE is not the sole reason for this situation. Other have said it (the poster right above me) and I will say it again; LA had final approval on everything major that happened in that game (the SWG Devs told us that on many occasions on the boards).
With this knowledge how could anyone in their right mind (after seeing EP1) not know that LA is sooo far out of touch that they would screw things up.
Lucas was lucky or good (that is up for debate) and caught lightning in a bottle once. The original movies, the original toys, etc were the right thing at the right time nothing more. He has been trying to capture that same lightning ever since and has failed every time. This is just one more attempt at that but it wont be the last. We can all expect many more Star Wars disappointments as time goes on.
SOE is not the root of all evil in the universe. They may be the drunk uncle of the root of all evil but that is also up for debate. I am not a SOE fanboy, I left SWG right before the CU because I got sick of SOEs lack of progress, lack of information and the direction the game was taking (under LA watchful eye). I have not given SOE a nickel since and most likely never will.
Once again sorry if that sounds like a rant - not looking for trouble or a flamefest.
Just remember not everyone can play games in 1st person. Hopefully all companies remember this so not everything turns into fps style that would be horrible.
I have been thinking for weeks about reactivating EQ2 but so far I just can't get myself to do it because of what they did to SWG. It is hard to have any trust whatsoever of a company that is so blatantly motivated by $$ and $$ only.
Uh Oh, you did it now, here comes the emperor lightning; "no, no, No, NO, YOU will pay!" Drimli, the last new movie, episode 3, is just slightly short of pure brilliance. The only reason people arn't roaming the streets, dressed as Anakin and the Emperor, is because of the mediocrity of episode's 1 and 2, and the fact that the ideas of starwars are now over 20 years old, so the starwars craze cannot possibly be as overwhelming as it was originally. Also, the 70's were such a dry, boring, and lame decade that something as creative as Starwars was seen as salvation.
If you think there is no good starwars entertainment since Return of the Jedi, I HIGHLY recommend you buy and play Star Wars; Nights of The Old Republic 2. It's so good that the stale old men at PC Gamer actually gave it a 5 point rating deduction for being "too ambitous". It does use open GL and requires approximately 1400 mhs to run smoothly.
It's combat system is actually a very smooth and easy rpg combat style in which the action stops for you to make combat decision for each char, you can choose no action pauses, wich is how the online fighting could be implemented. It would be the easiest way for anyone to play, and would do away with "twitch" reflexes used by most mmorpg's.
Dont be afraid, alot of my friends nd others have said the same thing, but they are actually making EQ2 better
Maybee there deverting all there rescources to EQ2,
It sucks that my favorite game suffers because SOE has a bad reputation

I was going to post a constructive reply, but then I realised your name has 'Sephiroth' in it, and decided against it.

No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
Well here's the thing. Star Wars in itself is huge! Anything you make that has Star Wars on it - will probably sell. Why do you think they have so many freaking Star Wars games made since the release of the original movie?
However everyone has their favorite area that they would like in a Star Wars game. For me I would like to be a Bounty Hunter in an mmorpg and have real live people put bounties on people's heads and I can be hired by them and go assasinate some of these guys and get payed. On the flop side, I would love to get into epic Jedi Knight battles... Maybe somewhat like Jedi Knight 2/academy but more in depth and intense. Add these into one world of Star Wars, I would be happy.
I know that SWG had some of these elements above. However they didnt have jedi when I played SWG... which I heard ended up being a dissapointment. And the bounty hunter system wasn't done well at all. The title "Bounty Hunter" didn't represent! Why don't they make a game true to the movies! I mean why cant I be a character like Bobafet or Gweedo who is paid by jaba the hut to find a guy name Han Solo? Thats the story, however there is no star wars game that represents that. How about true Light Saber sword blocking, fighting, movement, strategy, powers? There's no star wars game that totally represents what the movies have. Yes some of them do have some elemetns but nothing near the realism of the movies. I want to feel like I'm in a Star Wars movie and I have all these skills and power to use against others. Whether I'm an engineer, jedi knight, bounty hunter, musician, pilot, leader, gunsmith, armorsmith, pawn shop owner, etc... they should have those areas really be true to the movies... so someone isn't dissapointed that they can't be a Pawn shop guy that sells ship parts.
Having all these elements would be probably require some huge brain power to develop. If it is possible, this could be a mix of MMORPG / FPS / Adventure.
I would wish for there to be a very happy and working Star Wars World with something comparible to that. Would this ever happen? I don't know.
Knowing all the interviews with George Lucas... I would think he would want to go independant with this and have his own Lucas Arts develop, produce, publish a great big promising game of the Star Wars universe.

I have to disagree with you on the 3rd movie. Being 33 I was just the right age for the original movies and will always be a huge SW fan but that does not keep me from thinking the new movies suck.
What you said about SW ideas being 20 years old and the 70's - like I said in my original post; the right thing at the right time.
I have played KotOR and thought it rocked. But it was also set thousands of years before any other SW stuff and Bioware is the shit when it comes to RPGs, they just know how to tell a good story. But even given this bright spot in the recent SW history I think my point is still valid.
I miss DAoC
If you haven't played SWG before, you're probably not going to find the changes all that bad, because you've not experienced the game as it was before The game certainly has alot of life left in it, despite what some are saying, and the flames I'm likely to recieve for saying that :P
Sure, it would have been nice to keep the old skill system with the 36 odd professions, but that had a total of over 400 potential different profession combinations. That isn't an easy thing to keep balanced, and it was showing.
If Pub 27 goes as planned, along with the other stuff that has been discussed by the Devs, it could be a sign of cool things to come For instance, Jedi will be getting a new Force Mind Trick special and Commandos will be getting their heavy weapons back and if all goes well, mountable weapons like the E-Web.
Fun is a matter of perception. Just because others don't find it fun doesn't mean you won't.
If you want that kind of experience you need to get in a good RP guild.
In my guild the things i went threw were amazing....Im talking complex polotics and stories, epic fights, betrayle, and war.
We had assasinated people been captured. Been chased by bounty hunters, it was awsome.
Basicly SWG is all social, and what killed it for me was not the combat, it was the fact that alot of people in my guild left and i couldnt find it agian, Honestly it was the most fun i have had in any game ever.
Fixed post it probably makse sence now lol

if lucas arts actually made games anymore.....
they divided their liscenses and other companies pretty much make the games with a little bit of "creative oversight"(minimal amount).
KOTOR series is done by bioware, SWG is SoE, Battlefront i think is pandemic but i know it isnt lucas arts.
i think there last game was that continuation into the dark forces series in jedi academy,
but beyond that everyone else does everything else for them and has to pay them for it
98% of the teenage population does or has tried smoking pot. If you''re one of the 2% who hasn''t, copy & paste this in your signature.
I could not agree more, I left the game for the same exact reasons(about a month before the CU). I have never had so much fun playing any pc or console game(save morrowind III the elder scrolls). The guild I was in was awsome we all got along, for the most part hehe. Eventually the guild fell apart and we went our ways, some of us still chat, but it's hard to find a game that we all play.
On another note, I was devistated when I found out what the NGE was. I had spent countless hours since launch perfecting my proffesion of pistoleer/carbineer/bounty hunter, I never had the best equipment(really good stuff but not the best...I played a wookiee) and I never stacked templates, but I could put up a good fight with almost anyone on the server. I came to the point where I fell in love with carbineer, as a suport class. Recently I was thinking about reactivating my account, and then I researched what was going on with the game. Needless to say it was like loosing a friend or a pet. I was so devestated when I found out what was going on, i nearly shit my pants LOL.
No point to this really I'm just getting some steam off, hehe.
Funny thing is, when I think about it, I will mostlikely return to the game(just to give it a shot). I love star wars, and all the other mmorpgs that i've played were cool but did not do it for me. There are only two games that I can see myself playing in the future, one being Roma Victor and the other being Star Trek Online. From what I've read about Star trek, it seems like a very promising game.
Just another gamer...
You make good points Obraik and Jackdog. I suppose I should try it out for myself. I probably will seeing how there's a free trial. However; the fact that the game now allows Less customization of skills and characters is very unappealing to me. I am reluctant to play a game that has been dumbed down for the kiddies.
The Episode 3 based expansion does look pretty good to me. If it allows for alot of interaction with characters like the Emperor it could be really cool.
Gimli and Obandgo you have to open your mind to episode 3, unlearn what you have learned. You have the same mentality as my friend Brandon, and 10000000 other star wars fans, in that you see the first 3 movies as being so much more wonderful. But really, isn't this just because of nostalga? I agree that the first 3 are better overall, but watching them again and comparing them to episode 3, I see how cheesy the acting is, and how dated the original special effects are.
Vergultung, LucasArts has had to do what just about every publisher has since 1995 or so; they've had to farm out the development of their games to design houses because games are just so much more complex and time intensive to make now. The only major publisher that still makes their own games that I can think of is Nintendo. I think this really does help with the quality of games most of the time, but I do remember some very good starwars games made before this trend, like the Super Nintendo Star Wars series. I guess what I meant is that LucasArts should Have direct oversight of the design of a MMORPG starwars game, and then purchase their own hardware, servers and such, and have direct controll over it's development and maintenance.
Sony is just way too occupied with 1000000 other conflicting projects to give a damn about one online venture.
Ya my post had the wrong quote but i fixed it...this should make more sence....
If you want that kind of experience you need to get in a good RP guild.

You've always been able to interact with the Emperor, he's part of the Imperial themepark You'll see Darth Vader a bit too. He often makes an appearance to Imperial controlled cities and will give out quests to kill Rebel NPCS and/or Rebel Players. He also makes an appearance in some other quests too.
LucasArts has a huge amount of control over SWG, and it's why things move kinda slowly compared to other games. Anything and everything has to go through LA for approval before it can be published. LA infact is the driving force behind the NGE, Julio Torres (LA Guy) is the lead designer of the NGE.
To Vanguard everyone!
Get.....shoo.....get out of here *chases Lekri out with a broom* god...damn.... *throws him out the door.
