Originally posted by Jamkull PvP over time can be broken down into 3 groups, ones who love it, ones who hate it and ones who like it but only with certain restrictions. and pretty much games have taken up this same overall idea. WoW, DAoC, EQ2 (soon), CoH/CoV (Supposedly?), Guild Wars - All these have the restricted PvP, these cater mainly to those that like to PvE for the most part but has a twist of pvp interaction. All of these have more in-depth reasons and things to do when it comes to PvP. But personally I feel that WoW has had the right mix for me. Where you can do all the PvE stuff and then later on at least from lv 30+ you can end up running into the enemy and have a few fights from time to time. But by simply running up into the enemy terretories you can pick a fight anytime you want pretty much. DAoC and its RvR got old to me fairly quick because its the same old, same old after awhile. i'm sure they have made some updates and such. But i'm too stuck in WoW to want to check it out. WoW has verious battlezones and such to do stuff in and more to come around the corner. CoH/CoV, I know the CoH side has the arena thing and with the addition of CoV there is supposed to be some sort of thing where the Villians can build an evil domain of some sort and the heroes are supposed be able to come and fight the villians in some way. Not sure of it all becuase i haven't taken the time to check it out. I know it is a bit sci-fi or futuristic but it also has fantasy elements because you can litterally make your hero into anything from fantasy to futuristic. But as for open, FFA PvP you have Shadowbane, Lineage 2, Asheron's Call on its PvP server, EQ1 on one of its servers, EQ1 also has faction based as well. The best of these to me would be Shadowbane, especially with its new server Vindication where you have a slight amount of restriction to where you can only form up with a specific guild sect. But the only races truely restricted are the elves and half giants everyone else has a lot more freedom. And of course it has its other servers that are open to anything. But overall the best pure PvP experience IMHO is Shadowbane. Because you can build castles and such and litterally rule the land. It has a lot of aspects that allow for RTS style PvP. Lineage 2 of course is no different than any other FFA PvP that has ever come out. You are highly restriced on character design overall, I guess those koreans like to keep things simple when it comes to games. But its pretty much cut and dry. Asheron's Call has been renowned for its pvp server for a long time. The open skill based system is fun and the fact when you fight magic/ranged vs melee, the melee can litterally dodge the magic or arrows. It has a large amount of player skill aside from the character that is required to be good. AC is made up into Clans/guilds and they pretty much rule specific areas it has its own underlined political battle going on. But nevertheless it is unrestricted pvp. Although a bit outdated on the graphic side but it is fun. just my 2c, hope it helps
Actually EQ2 has had PVP with some restrictions since august/september when the Dueling and DoF went live. The upcoming PVP adds are for a new PVP enabled server pair that they're putting live. The main game isn't changing.

This is why EQ2 will never mesh with an open PVP system. To have open PVP you have to have a system where anything can be PURCHASED without massive time investment. Otherwise open PVP with looting just won't work. If it takes too long or is too hard to get people won't be willing to risk it. Thus open pvp with looting fails. It's why they took looting off Rallos and Tallon Zek way back when in EQ1 as well.
Looting is only an option in a PVP game if the entire economy is built around affordable player crafted and sold rather than dropped gear.

Most people have handcrafted player made armour, but then again im poorer than most people i think

You my friend are what we call a l337 PKing kiddie.
So what if you can't kill a player 40 levels below you and take their stuff? Does it matter, really?

I am no ganker by any means, I just think WoW PvP is pointless, a no risk no reward system. Why would you not want to go on a alliane raid with your guild to lets say Terran Mill & win the raid turning it over to the alliance side until it is retaken. That would fit a warcraft game I would think.

Taking other Faction's territory would be fun, but for certain well defended places, (most of Teldrassil, Khaz Modan, some other Horde controlled places) it wouldn't work for the other faction to hold them for any length of time, but still, it would be fun.

personally, i think that if you get guild wars, you will have a lot of fun with pvp. if you have a guild, you can have guild battles (which are wildly fun imo) and you can make a pvp only character that starts at max lvl (20) and can compeat in many different competitive battles and minigames.

I agree that the pvp in WoW does seem pointless. That was one of the reasons I ended up taking a break, was because of the whole ranking system. Now they reward the people who play the most. I took a 1 month break and when I came back I went from A Stone Guard to a Scout.
But I thought the pvp was very good. It was fast paced, required skill. And it was the closest thing to Old UO I had played in terms of fast paced skilled pvp. But like you said there was basically no reason to pvp, unless you just wanted a nifty title. They dont let you interact by talking to the enemies, and its almost like your fighting and incredibly skilled NPC. Theres just no life to it, after playing a game like UO, where pvp was VERY Meaningful. I got the same feeling from Daoc, they dont let you communicate with the enemy at all, in all seems very watered down.
Ill give you and example, in the old days in Ultima Online, two people might get into and argument over loot, a woman????, someone sneaking in your pack. You could even talk with the person and ask them to stop it. You could say "Hey Stop it Or DIE!"... The guild wars in the game, where much more interesting, and after a battle many times, your enemy would resurrect you and you could talk about the battle. In these new games, this is impossible. And personally I think this is needed. I would like to know my enemies name, why he attacked me, or anything, rahter than "O theres and alliance kill them for I can get a few honor points"!!
Anyways I have never played and mmorpg unless it was pvp. Even when I played EQ I played on Rallos Zek. But I still think the non pvpers should have there own server. I would rather the people who dont want to pvp have the own server and the ones who do want to, to have the own instead of the no pvp zone's stuff that takes the immersion out of the game. WOW came very close to this on there pvp servers, if they would just add something to make the interaction of the enemy not to bland it would be alot more fun.
I think there's one relevant question you have to ask yourself. Do you want to play an mmorpg which was built for pvp in mind from the ground up or an mmorpg which has pvp as an afterthought, in the worst case scenario coming in a patch? For the former there are only two choices: Shadowbane and DAOC. For the latter just about any mmorpg but FF XI will do. Almost everyone who's played the old UO knows it was the best but AOS finally killed the pvp that was left after Trammel.
Originally posted by Popori DAoC has several balance problems to work out. The PvP there is quiet possibly the best ONLY if you have a group of friends/players to play with.If you're going at it alone, WoW. Its fun when you're not waiting in queues for hours on end, hehe.I can't comment on EQ2, for obvious reasons - the game itself was alright.Didn't like Guild Wars, the game nor the PvP. Sorry.
this is my opinion exactly, i play wow and i have fun with the pvp there. I'm not one that has to grief in order to have fun in a game so there doesn't have to be item looting or anything like that.

Lineage 2
Has Open PvP with guilds and alliances and castle seiges! Especially very intense once you join a guild/alliance.
