How challenging will the combat of this game be?

I like a good challenge combined with a pennalty versus reward system.  Sadly the last game that really had such a system was probably good old EQ...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I'm not in beta, but AFAIK combat is a mix of GW2 and Neverwinter Online. So, take it as you will.

Actually Gw2 has one of best character animation even Skyrim suck in comparison I said animation but not how combat works. Bad thing in gw2 is that is not a real action and interact locational damage infliction  it's a hybrid. Where you can't void hits if you're in skill range.  It's laziest combat ever better that others but lazy because they didn't finished it as an fully action combat with sword interaction on object not simply on range. Perfect melee combat was only in 1 game close to perfect  in Vindictus online!

BEST combat for ESO I thing would be Gw2 character animation movment because it looks real neat and you feel that you have full control other your  character . And with Vindictus object interaction maximum realism possible here

Man, what. The animations in GW2 are pretty poor with the exception of the Asura who were obviously animated by someone who knew what they were doing. The Charr are not that bad either

    [mod edit]

  • Yeah, I also found the GW2 animations lacking overall, with a few exceptions. It reminds me of WAR where the dwarfs were really well animated but most other characters weren't.

I disagree, I think GW2 has some of the best animations in the genre.  Especially the 2-handed fighting melee weapons.  Dual-Wield is not up to par because you swing the weapons independently where I like the look of swinging both weapons together but that is a thematic preference for me but the animations doing so are still rock solid.

Neverwinter has the best combat for action because it feels responsive, tight and visceral.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

GW2 animations are medicore. they have some realy cool and goodd ones but at the same time several issues with other ones. Some of them bug out frequently (like Ele air-scepter).  Not that much different for the eso animations i have seen. Some of them look nice others horrible but the huge issue is that i think standard animations for running, combat stance, jumping, standard/heavy attack are the most horrible ones and all in all i did see more horrible animations than good ones.

The combat(gw2) is a decent mix of action and having a few skills at your disposal. Lack of realy great buffing, debuffing or cc system(point of view may vary as there are ways for buffing like stacking might but for me they are no alternative to real buff-strategy via group-/single-buffs). Combat tends to get boring because of limitations to usable skills and the amount of time the player actualy uses the same skills all the time and in some cases combat is nothing more than running circles around a mob while using the auto-attack skill.

Now ESO uses less than 1/2 of gw2 combat skills(5 for Eso and at least 10 weapon skills for gw2) and lacks the additional skill-slots like gw2(5 slots for utility skills). Depending on the gw2-class you choose to compare you're down to at least 1/3 the amount of skills while non of them(at least the ones that already got released to the public) is more complex than the gw2 skills. I would go as far as even say that the gw2 auto-attck skills are way more interesting than eso standard attack including the heavy attack. At the same time i don't consider eso's combat as more fluid or more action as gw2.  Basically we have a combat flow that is not better than gw2 but uses far less skill and even adds resource-limitations(stamina, magika). Add the lack of a combo-system and the combat ends up being extremly boring.

from your post I can tell you haven't played it.. but regardless.. none of that has anything to do with the combat being difficult or not. I personally believe its almost impossible to make mmo combat difficult. On the other hand it is action combat and by nature it is more difficult then standard mmo combat.

How did this turn into a discussion about the combat animations in GW2? The OP asked about how challenging the combat in ESO may or may not be.

and i would say that you haven't played it...but it probably comes down to personal taste. Maybe in a few weeks we are able to talk more openly about it.

At the same time it realy seems you haven't played several older mmo's if you realy belive action combat means higher difficulty. From my personal experience the mmo's with the best challenging encounters have been non-action ones.

If finesse and cross-class spell/ability combos will play an important role in endgame, then I guess it could prove quite challenging (if devs don't dumb things down for the masses of course).

Cause those that know about ESOs combat either can't or wont go into detail about it cause of the NDA. Alls I can say is that I assume that it will be like most MMOs, a lot of cake walking with a few areas of challenging combat.
