One year ago, I wrote a post about raising money for a zombie game and was bashed by almost everyone that visited the post.

One year later, I'am running my own game development company with a game soon to be released.

We are using proton for the multi-player.

What does that have to do with anything

You don't think it's relevant that last time you came here to talk about your game, your plan was to raise $5500 on indiegogo, and give that to someone who promised to deliver an entire game for that price?

What's your business plan this time, anyway?

My plan is to add the finishing touches and then release the game for $10.

Once again this guy says "My plan..."  Just admit you are doing this alone.  Hell I would go a great deal easier on you if you admitted it.

I won't argue with you. I've already mentioned that I work with a team.

First I'd like to applaud you for actually putting in the time to get YOUR project up & running, it is no small feat. Lots of people talk the talk, but have nothing to show. A lot of "arm chair quarterbacks" on this forum that know nothing about game development and insist graphics means everything.

I did not vote because all I saw was Unity screen shots of random scenes. No offense, but I can put together the same thing in 3 days. If your focus is on gameplay, then I will save my judgement for when I get to play the game itself.

A little bit of advice, please proofread what you put on steam, as well as the way you word your posts on forums when advocating for your product.

English is my second language, so I understand how difficult it can be at times to get your point across, but you must understand that you are the face of your product (from what I gather), and everything you say or do will now reflect on your product, just as your product will be a reflection of your work ethics.

    Good luck.

Says you're releasing the game on the 17th, 5 days from now.

But none of your screen show even a character model, let alone any gameplay.

I would expect, even for an indie developer, to see some actual gameplay for a game that is supposed to be released in less than a week.  Especially if you're going to be charging people $10 for it.

I apologize, but something seems very off here.

Any chance you'd care to explain why the steam page says the game releases in 5 days, and there's not video to even show gameplay for a game you said you'll be charging $10 for?

I'm curious about the squad based part of the game, where you'll have AI teammates to fight with.  How well is your AI, and can we see it in action?  I would have to assume that if the game is releasing on the 17th that this should be done by now.  I can only imagine the undertaking it is for your guy in charge of the AI, a lot of AAA studios seem to have a heck of a time getting this done well, and you appear to be leading a rather small team.

Do you have an official website one can go to?

How will people be purchasing the game come the 17th?

I'm not releasing the game. The feedback I got was mostly negative.

If you want to do game development, you just have to grow a thick skin.

People like to bash stuff on the internet. It is not personal.

And it is certainly true that game development is very competitive. You are essentially competing for people's time, attention & money. There are so many types of other entertainment that even if you can beat other zombie games, you have to also beat other types of games, tablets, and even tv. Now you don't have to win 100% to get enough to pay for your efforts, but it is very easy to get drown out in all the noise.

    Good luck!

I feel the same as a few others, we have seen so many zombie games that it is kind of a stale subject imo, a game that required you to defend an area from dragons, that is set in modern times would be much more interesting to the gaming masses.

Thanks for that. Game development is incredibly difficult, sometimes I don't think it's worth it. I do feel like giving up and closing the project.

One year ago people were crying out for photo's, then it'll be videos and once they finally play the game they'll still be complaining for more features.

I have most of it done but it's expensive to release and I don't it to flop. I do have a team but they consist of freelacers

  • UhwopUhwop Member UncommonPosts: 1,791

I personally don't have a problem with zombies, in fact I love zombies.  Nor do I think there's "to many" zombie games.  I've played a heck of a lot more high fantasy games than zombie games, and I don't see people complaining about "yet another fantasy game."

However, I have not seen very many good zombie games.

I would recommend having an actual game to show before asking for feedback.

Well I tip my hat to you OP for bringing your game's info here to MMORPG.com's forums for feedback.  I know some posters can be rough here but some of them really do make good points.  I wish I could give you good feedback but I'm only an animator  with Maya and Max under my belt and with some basic modeling and rigging skills.  I can say though that pictures or videos of gameplay will go a lot further than a game synopsis on Steam or environment stills.  However, good luck with the project.  I will be looking forward to seeing some zombie walk and idle animations in your trailer if you have them to showcase.  Can we also have some links to some character model turntables or walk/run cycles?  If no turntables or character models yet then I would recommend your artists post them to Polycount for some great feedback if they haven't already.

I'm reviewing all the models again. After the bashing I got for releasing pictures, and the game info , I'm having second thoughts.

On friday, I will be releasing a trailer, If I don't , then its right to assume that I closed the project.

From what the polls indicate, It seems that most people think the game is ok and more will be willing to buy if they see a video.Releasing the game itself is costly and if there is a good chance it will flop, then there really is no point.

The problem isn't "your game idea is bad".  Rather, the problem is "you look extremely unlikely to be able to create what you want".  You've got the passion needed to make a game.  But until you demonstrate that you can do something challenging that the off-the-shelf game engine and art assets don't handle for you, you haven't made meaningful progress.

Don't give up man....if YOU think the game is amazing then release the game...Let people play it then see what they really think....Don't screw people over...Don't Lie about Features.....Don't Lie to the Gamers who will be buying your games

Keeeep up the good work.....Don't Give up just because people criticize what your doing .....If it is a passion for you keep on going....If your just doing it to become a Millionaire.....Then give up haha

Making a Online game seems like it could be a Life Long  Job, as long as you have the funding to keep it going and the will power to never stop....whos to say it wont still be playable in 20 years. If you are keeping the game Updated All the time...Constantly evolving your game ALL THE TIME, Never stop adding Content and your game could be going for LONG ASS TIME

    GOOD LUCK

Not only that, you brought your idea here, where everyone is an armchair game developer, many of who think they know better than actual, successful developers how to build games. We really can be rude too. Try not to take it personal.

There are a few people here who are either in the "business", or are developers themselves. Raph Koster occasionally chimes in on topics, if you can believe it. If you stick around enough, you'll get to know who those people are. Their advice is generally something to listen to.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

    Whatever happens, don't get discouraged.

Sure, i may not even like the game, but you are not doing it for me, nor for the people here, but for yourself.

If you're brave enough to post on this site, you should be brave enough to see your project through.

How many entrepreneurs we're told that their idea/invention wasn't going to work, then imagine where our science/technology etc would be today if they had listened to the negative comments.

Sift through the feedback and use it to make improvements. Why give up on something you're passoionate about?????

    Thanks for the encouragement guys.

I really do feel like giving up, the journey that I went through to get funding was immense.

It's easy to say keep going and don't stop but when your financial future relies on it, then what?. I'll be in debt if this game fails.

I could've spent my teen years enjoying myself and having fun rather watching videos on game design and programming.

I need to think about it because honestly, there is more to life than this and I'm fed up failing.

It'll be awesome to succeed but If I don't , I'll join the list of failures who will never get their time back.

Is it really a risk you should take when you only have one life.

    Whatever happens , thanks...

The description on the Steam community page is intriguing. I like your ideas, despite the poor presentation. If you can make a quality game from those ideas, then I will give it a shot.

On the poll, I didn't vote because I didn't have sufficient information to form an opinion. I will reserve my vote for the day when gameplay footage and actual in-game graphics are presented. Until then, I remain cautiously optimistic and hope you can pull it off!

Good but not great.  And that's meant as a compliment.  Honestly it is.  I don't rate my own work anywhere near this high.

Terrain shaping looks rough and unfinished in some areas.  A couple obvious "boob hills" pulled up with a terrain tool but never randomized into a rugged terrain shape.  A few places where a flatten tool was used and never roughed up, leaving a table like surface with easily seen terrain mesh triangles.

I also noticed multiple shadow errors for unknown reasons.  Some trees shadow perfectly, others not at all.  A building on a cement slab throws no shadow on the slab, but the fence at the edge shadows perfectly.  Just inconsistencies seen from a high angle screenshot.  Nothing huge but should be looked into.

Models and textures, to me, look to be quite good quality.  Even if generic, they're quite good assuming they're stock art.

Engine seems to do a nice job on water.

Overall, great job.  Good-luck with it.

I don't think those freelancers earned their pay...

What killed it the most for me was it's presentation. I...(other comments that make me sound like an egotistical arm chair dev)

Even if the project does make it, doesn't mean you have to throw in the towel. If you take a step back and work on something smaller in scope/scale you could still find success. We certainly need more co-op games.

First congratulations for having a go at game developing tried myself and yeah it's hard. Internet goon squads these days don't help much either, but who are anyone to stand in the way of your goals.

If you have already put a lot of investment into this project and have minimal investment left to launch it may be worth pushing on and at least work to make some returns. Passion projects are a huge risk. I'm making a comic to be published at the moment and don't expect to get sales enough to ever get paid out..... but you know what if you don't put it out there you won't know.

Don't let the interwebs crush your dreams.
