Exhausted from MMO hunt.

I've literally been researching MMO's for about a month, from Google, to various MMO list, YouTube videos, video comments, forum comments, personal opinions, you name it. The point being, I really want to get into a MMO worth my time. I'm very picky about wasting time on an MMO that will only bring me temporary joy or fun. I want to experience an MMO that will take all my time and effort and in return provide me with the type of exciting gameplay that haunts your thoughts throughout your day as you itch to play.

With that being said. Here's some of the things I'm looking for in an MMO. Order of importance.

PVP: To me the most important aspect. What's a game if you can't test your hard work and skills on other players? Looking for pvp that not only brings great fun, but in SOME way rewards me, and doesn't feel pointless. No unrealistic expectations of 100% skill based, but at least some skill involved. Whether Open World, PvP System, or both.

Adventure: The type of gameplay that feels fresh, new, and really makes you feel at home. Decently planned quest and non sense activities when you feel like goofing off. Like kicking it in the local pub in WoW. I want to be able to really feel like I'm "questing" and not just completing simple task, with more NPC chat than participation.

Balance: Now we ALL know MMO's are never balanced. In terms of gear, I believe hard work pays off, and if you don't have the gear, then you can't complain. However, I do believe EVERY class should have a fair chance in pvp. Such as if every class had the same gear, it'd be a fair bout from there. Other than that, don't totally expect 100% balance. Pay2Win, OUT OF QUESTION.

Favored class: I love the occasional assassin classes that involve speed and weak power, with the one powerhouse skill, or so. I understand this class is a rare one in games, but IF it somehow pops up, let me know. Defiantly not required, I actually don't care much about classes, only this particular type. No classes at all is fine, however, I'm looking for more of an MMORPG, and not pure strategy like EVE, so that might not be possible.

Now those are, for the most part, my main areas of interest. Things like gender lock, harsh pay2win, and poor community/economy will be great if left out please. Graphics don't matter much to me. I really need help. Can't decide on any MMO and I'm tired of these boring days of finger fidgeting and social network drama.

One last thing. I realize having all these things in one MMO is daydreaming, which is why I've listed in order of importance, if needed, sacrifice one over the other.

Maybe a burglar in LOTRO?  It has unusual PvP in the player vs player monster style, is very atmospheric and has lots to do in your down-time as far as just hanging out, listening to player music and roleplaying, if you're into that.  I recommend Landroval server.  Great community.

I was on a long hunt for an MMO, and have finally settled in to Wakfu. The PvP is kind of lacking at the moment, but they are updating for guild vs guild and making meaningful PvP "soon".

It is F2P, but you basically have to sub if you want to get past lvl 40 or 50 effectively. Good news is that the sub is only something like 6$ a month.

There are quest lines that are pretty long, and engaging. There is a bit of a grind to the game, but it gives you a little sense of accomplishment when you actually level.

It is a sandboxy game. What I mean by that is you pick a class (15 to choose from), and then each class has 3 branches in it, with a set of specialties that you level up on their own. You aren't forced into going down one branch. You can pick any skills from the branches and specifically level those up.

There is a lot to go on about, but it is worth giving it a try.

I say roll a toon on the PVP server in TERA.  There's also battlegrounds at lvl 30+ which are pretty fun.

Many on these boards will disagree but I think EVE is the best fit for what you describe. The only real downside to EVE is you will have to find other people to play with, people you can trust, and that is not always easy. The pvp can be a ton of fun, but it can also be extremely infuriating. I can't think of any other game that has more rewarding PVP than EVE - you get a nice little killmail for the guy you killed and you get a chance at taking his loot. The only area where EVE won't be able to scratch that itch for you is probably the "kicking it in the local pub," aspect unless you want to hang out docked up in Jita and spew nonsense in local. "Questing," in EVE always has you potentially in the crosshairs of another player so the sense of adventure and excitement will be there, but mindless quest running is definitely NOT part of EVE.

Now I'll just put in some other ideas to cover more bases if you "dont want to be a space ship," as many (understandably) do not...

Planetside 2: Pure PVP so there won't be any quests, but it fits all of the rest of your criteria and the PVP is nonstop so there really isn't a situation where you will be bored and want to just relax. Plus it's free with a great f2p model. In game economy is non-existant. Community is pretty good, though (minus the whining).

The Secret World: The PVP isn't the best, but it is fun and can be complex. The questing is the best in the market and character builds are very open ended and unique. Lack of real "classes," and visible armor tends to put people off, as well as the rather lackluster endgame (though I've heard its gotten better since I last played).

FFXIV: Has everything you want, but I didnt make it my number 1 because I never personally tried the PVP (but I heard its good). Classes are pretty unique and fun, quests are enjoyable enough, dungeons are fun if rarely challenging. All in all FFXIV is one of the most solid MMO experiences I've ever had, and once some more end game content is put in i will definitely be back.

I'm playing this one right now.  The PvP is pretty awful right now, but that's because there's only 1 4vs4 Arena.  The PvE is pretty fun, and if you've played WoW then you know what to expect.

I'm simply not playing an MMO this Winter, even though it's really the only kind of game I want to play.  I decided to take a break since I am well aware of all the available games.  I'll dabble in one of the new games coming out this Spring, but for now I'm just playing Battlefield 4 and tinkering with my Oculus Rift.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

If you're not totally burned out on it yet, play WoW. It meets your criteria. Rift was an excellent game with loads of content, but I'm not sure how things are now. Also, SWTOR has some of the most fun themepark PVP I've played. More games need Huttball.

Considered this but currently I cannot play TERA due to certain circumstances of my computer. I could play if I sacrificed my brother's MMO, but since he's enjoying himself tons and I'm not a selfish person, I've decided to hold it out on that experience and let my brother continue his MMO. Thanks though, really appreciate it!

This has also been considered but due to mass confusion, I'm stuck. I understand Wushu is more North American fit, where as Wulin is EU. Since I've heard Wushu has horrible customer support, I've decided to go Wulin (If this is my choice of MMO), but I'm worried about the lag I'll encounter with other players. Is there a big enough NA playerbase on Wulin to shrug this issue off, or should I just put up with the customer support and complex download of Wushu (By "complex" I mean long, due to file inserting, opposed to a direct download) and play on there to be safe?

As for the rest of you, all I can say is "Wow". Great community, lovely people, didn't expect so much feedback in such little time. I really appreciate the input from everyone and I'm slowly being appealed to each MMO you speak of. As for WoW and EVE, yes great games indeed, but due to personal reasons (Going to spare this post of excessive chit chatter from me) I'm going to have to sit out on those as well. As for Final Fantasy and Wafku, I'll give those time to improve on the aspects you guys listed. Further input from anyone is much appreciated. So no end/close to this post please. THANK YOU people, simply amazing.

I'm on the same boat my friend. Over the past couple of weeks I've been researching and looking for that MMO that will grab my interest and keep me hooked. I'm very picky as well with the overall quality and "polished" feel of the games I play. The truth is most MMOs out there right now don't meet the high quality standards we would all like to have in our games. Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of good ones, but for every respectable MMO that comes out, another ten come along and that mediocre. Of course, everyone has different tastes and some will cater to them. But for me I look for someone better.

That last MMO I tried was Neverwinter. It is relatively new so I liked the idea of giving it a try since it looked interesting. At first I was better than expected, as far as controls, art and visual appeal goes. I thought "Hey this runs well and the gameplay is not too shabby." and when I saw the city it was a nice slight and lively with players. Then... I started questing. On the 3rd dungeon I suspect something was off. It did'n't feel right that by then I hadn't been given the chance to explore the outside open world. I googled the game and watched some videos and some reviews. It was then I learned the game is completely instanced... in every aspect. That was so disappointing, right then and there I logged off and don't plan on coming back. Some would argue about it being an MMO.

That's just one example of the let downs I've experienced looking for a game to dedicate my play time. Other games I tried were TERA. Nice graphics, but poorly optimized games. Luck of draw, people with medium hardware ran it okay, someone with high-end PC and it runs like crap on cities and where big structures are. I HATE poorly optimized games. Tried it for 2 days, tried to find a fix, then I read the plethora of complains about it from other people, and uninstalled it right there. Tried Guild Wars 2... boy what a let down. I enjoy a good balance of PvE and PvP. Usually PvE as an introductory experience in a game, gradually shifting towards PvP at end game. PvE was fantastic in that game. But PvP? What the hell was that WvWvW? A lot of the PvP aspect felt instanced. I don't mind some of this, but open world PvP is a major plus too. And the battlegrounds... In short... not the game I was sold on by my friends. I never played GW1, as I was hooked on other games back then, but I heard from fans of the first that they should've stuck with the old formula instead.

It's really a long list of games I've checked and why I didn't like them, but enough of that. I feel there's little hope that a game out right now can grab my interest. I may just have to wait to something on the horizon this year and hope it is everything they're hyping it to be. They're talking big about Wildstar, but the art style looks weird. I'll have to wait and see. That's another thing. These days MMOs get hyped so much, they talk about how many awesome features they're going to have, this and that. Only to realize after launch that they're not as good as they said it was, and most "innovative features" were gimmicks and wear out fast, and then you're left with the usual repetitive stuff.

I mean... maybe I am extremely picky. Sorry for the rant in your thread but I had to let it out. lol

DKnight, "on the same boat" is an understatement. Looks like you and I are together on this Titanic and we're approaching the dark depths of the sea fast. You described my situation perfectly, and damn, that Neverwinter sounds like a HUGE let down. As for the whole "catch my interest" aspect, seems impossible to me as well. I guess MMO's (really most games) these days are too caught up on epic complexity, outrageous gear, and cash items to even be somewhat enjoyable now these days. If possible I would love to play an MMO with you, if ever given the opportunity. With that being said, I'm really leaning towards Age Of Wushu. Not really my style of PvP, but I've grown fond of the whole "pay for every mistake" type of dueling. Seems like it takes just the right amount of strategy, and so far, it's the only game that's really caught my attention (Actually thought I'd never consider this game when I first came across it sometime last month). The entire system on the game seems fresh, unique, and new, so considering the endless free time I'm coming across lately, I'm going to give it a try. From what I've seen, the skills and combos can be improved a bit, last thing I want is to come across a "Spam 4 moves" type of PvP game. The kidnapping, schools, school wars, and infamy system seems to patch up and help me overlook that lack of fast paced, semi-complex, type of PvP. It defiantly doesn't 100% satisfy my picky taste, not even close, but that seems impossible at this point. All in all, this seems like the best choice for me so far. As bad as it sounds, I'm actually excited by the fact that I'm not the only one going through this dreadful "MMO hunt". So far I've just been playing MMOFPS or any instant action MMO to satisfy my gaming craves temporarily. Well, good luck to you DKnight, may you found an MMO that suits you, as I wish I do.
