monitor question

r3volt21r3volt21 Member UncommonPosts: 97

I am looking at buying a new monitor to go with the pc u guys helped me build a while back.  I have come across one second hand that seems good was wondering if u guys knew anything about it its a 120hz led samsung 24inch model number is Ls24b550 posting a pic, I couldn't find much info by searching the model number.   I would be upgrading from a 24inch benq 60hz full hd.

Just want to make sure its a good monitor for gaming.

cheap and cheerful and should be okay.. not sure i would risk buying a second hand one though image

This Article should be helpful, r3volt21. I've bought second-hand in stores way back in the days of CRT monitors and all I really know is to look out for dead pixels.

not sure if that is the 1, it  has mobile control is a limited white version, reson for buying this second hand is due to it being a good price for a 120hz and it is guaranteed to be 100% working with no dead pixles and i can view it gaming before purchasing.

Searching online, only found reference to 23' monitors from samsung that are rated at 120hz, mostly related to 3d+glasses etc. But the model numbers are completely different. If your serious about getting 120hz monitor though, you might be better off getting a Benq one, it really depends on what you want the monitor for, as it sounds like unless your really set on 3d, or at least smoother graphics (assuming your GPU can handle the increase from 60/120hz without dropping from 1920x1080) that there is very little difference between one of those and the one you already have. I'm not a fan of 3d personally, so i'd be tempted to go for a bigger screen given the choice image

its is 23.6inch not 24 I was  told 24 in message and 23.6 in add lol, he assures me its 120hz and less then 12 months old. I think he has got the model number completely wrong, I am not interested in 3d just like the look and smoothness 120hz gives in gaming. I am currently running a 7970 vapor x with a i5 3570k (ivy bridge) g card is running just factory oc and cpu is at 4.2 runs tera at over 100fps if i do a frame unlock in the ini ( with settings cranked+ other configs aa etc).  I cant afford $500 ish on a new one just after christmas,  might have to just go and inspect and make sure its a 120hz before purchasing.

I bought a 120hz 32" Samsung tv from Costco for like 300 bucks and it works great as a monitor.

As long as you can take a look at it in action before you buy I dont see a problem with getting one used. I would be leery of just buying without trying tho.

I personally use a samsung monitor and have for years, no issues with mine. A friend actually bought one just like it after he saw mine because it looked so good lol. Not saying there arent some crappy samsung monitors, but overall my experience has been good with them.

OP, what no one has told you here is the fact there is no difference between "smoothness" when you look at 60 FPS and 120 FPS.

Higher Hz monitors usually have pretty bad colour reproduction  and yes, 120 hz is important when you do 3D, but you specifically said you don't - I'd advise you to get a really good 60 Hz monitor instead.

Bad colour reproduction is a pain. For example, if you look at the really dark areas ingame you can see blobs of "dark" and then slightly lighter "black".

It's possible that model is sold in Korea hence the number which no one can find. I've purchased TV's in in Korea and had the same issue. As was already mentioned if you can try before you buy I see no reason to worry honestly.

I had no idea about that, I will check it out possibly take my own tower to test a game and really check it out as i doubt his was even running it at 120hz, If i decide to get a new one what about something like

wouldn't be worth the extra $$

thanks for all the input turns out i dont know much about monitors.

If you do have $300 to spend you can already look at some cheaper IPS panels. They have better viewing angles and deeper black then TN or the VAs you linked to.

They are by far the superior technology, and I plan to buy one myself soon.

I was personally looking at this model:

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2412690,00.asp

Please mind that it's a good LCD panel but it's cheaper as the stand isn't adjustable and it doesn't have USB ports and all the other bling bling. Personally, I want my monitors to first and foremost be a great display, not a USB hub so I don't mind.
