Hello there, I don't usually look for help when deciding on computer hardware upgrades but i'm a ibt out of date when it comes to the new stuff.

Mainly I want to upgrade my graphics card (for improved visuals and fps) but i just cant deiced on a card. my Budget is between £200-£250. Based on my computer specs what would you reccomend and why?

  • Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3
  • CPU: AMD FX-4100
  • RAM: Corsair 8GB (2pc kit) CMZ8GX3M2A 1600C9
  • GPU: Radeon HD 5770 1GB
  • Cant remember my PSU power

Thank you for any advice given.

Let's see what power supply and case you have.  You don't want to stick in a high-powered card that promptly fries everything.

It would be very good to know and post your PSU to get any real advice.

Just shooting in the dark you would probably be fine with a 7790 or a 7850, the R9 270 also. Those are all in your price range on the low end. Before dropping in anything more I would for sure know what PSU. More than likely those cards would do fine, but thats not 100%.

Take that for what it is.

You could upgrade your CPU to a FX-63xx or FX-83xx.  The difference wouldn't be huge, but it is an option.  I think a video card upgrade would do more for you at this point.

Thanks guys for the help. I havent had a chance to look at my PSU. I know its nothing fancy more of a budget/mid range one and i think its a 700w.

    I've now got my eye on either a;

    £200 - HD 7970

    £230 - R9 280X

    £250 - GTX 770

From looking on benchmark charts the 280x and 7970 come in equally with the GTX 770 the clear winner just not sure if im going to notice a huge difference.

Well then find out.  If you have to open up the case and read the label, then do it.  There's no sense in buying a new video card with no idea whether or not it will fry the rest of your system.

Just open the case and look, should take literally 5 minutes to find out what PSU you have. It is your money and your PC to do with as you wish, but before you spend that kind of money I would find out.

If you replace a low end GPU with a 7970 and have no idea if your PSU can even handle the additional power draw then you will be gambling on it working, and if it does work how long it will do so.

A 7970 will probably pull over double what a 5770 does. If you have a decent 700w PSU then you would be OK. If its a cheap one then maybe not. Its a guess at this point.

Either way good luck to you =)

Just wanna say thank you to everyone that helped.

In the end i went and bought a Sapphire Vapor-X R9 280X OC edition . My PSU was 700w but was a bog standard cheap thing so I also bought a  XFX Pro750W Core Edition (Bronze) PSU.

All plugged in an working fine.

    Cheers peeps.
