So people- what has your interest piqued in this game? What potential developments worry you? What to you hope it avoids?
Me? The big one is the obvious one: One more MMO falling through the cracks as the studio doesn't get the backing (financial or otherwise) it needs. To be perfectly honest, I wont be surprised if this one gets scrapped- I just hope it doesn't.
I also really hope they expand on the off ship aspects, and lean towards a less realistic approach. Let's face it, constant ship combat can and will get stale, and some definate, attractive options on land will be needed.
Will this play out like an online variant of Sid Meier's Pirates? I certainly hope not. While it was a nice little retro refresher, I truly hope this becomes a thing all it's own. Done right, and with imagination, there is a lot of potential in this uncharted genre.
Will missions/npc/story interaction take a backseat to mindless ship sinking for the sake of comparing your gold to some other guy on your server? Will there be a strong motivation to keep playing, two months in? They have said this game lends itself to the "serious gamer"- tell me this doesnt mean spending twelve hours searching the seas every day for a month, farming a rare type of island trader who carries the specs for a particularly nasty cannon. Give me motivation!
All in all, I see a great shot at a great game, and an equally nasty chance to fail miserably at this game. I say, draw from the incredible market and scope of EVE Online, the story and interaction of CoH, WoW, EQ, and others, and alot of the sorely needed "Single player quality" and they've got me.
Comments
Depth could be a problem, but as long as the gameplay is interesting and strategic enough, it could last for quite some time. I have to admit, I share your fear of a shallow game full of mini-games like Sid Meier's.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Using a setting that actually was might prove difficult to weave a motivating story around. I suppose it depends, for me, on what degree of artistic license they take- I do hope I see a number of cleverly laid jokes!
Agreed, though I hope they actually put in some sort of motivational thing to make hunting others worthwhile long after you've reached the higher skill levels. Some sort of rewards system, I suppose.
What worries me most is if everyone and thier moms will choose choose pirates...
2nd might be if i'm gonna get a replacement of my geforce 2 mx 400 till' release
The game is just about to roll into alpha (and soon beta) and you think it might get scrapped? LOL>>> you haven't been following this one, have you?
My suggestion, and you can take it for what it's worth, is to wait until you're in beta and see for yourself whether it's 'got what it takes' to keep you playing and having fun. Even then, it's not like the game is going to be 'finished' when it's released. (No MMO is) They've talked about R1, R2, R3, since the very earliest days.
Hey, whatever, if it's not your game, it's not your game. You'll play something else if that's the case. Just know this -- this game WILL be released.
I say again, I hope it doesnt get scrapped.
MMOs have been scrapped after release, like say, E&B. Say all you like about the game, I think it was a great one- it just didnt have the post launch support it so badly needed.
I have my fingers tightly crossed that PotBS makes it to release simply because it is different.
The vast majority of the MMORPG market is Sword and Sorcery which is fine by me but a little variety has got to be good.
That is one of the reasons I like CoH so much. It is totally different to anything else on offer.
As for concerns I have quite a few but the main one would be addictive content. Just how much diversity and new content can be encounterd whilst sailing a ship ?
As I said - fingers crossed
I think there's actually a good number of ships. Sure, at first you might see half the people wanting the huge, bombarding ships, that is until people like me play "hunters" and quickly evade and sink them enmass with my group. Things will pan out, and with luck, they will become more and more customizable.
The key is forming a history with your ship- most captains wouldnt have commanded 50+ ships, I believe, and the famous ones are usually associated with one ship- make your trademark
Well first off, this game will come out. And about this quote above, the mission designers are VERY hard at work getting more and more missions into the game every day. check out burningsea.com, there are some places that they talk about this. The mission team rocks, Mr. John Tynes is a fantastic writer. I think there is a lot to look forward to!

I am worried that port conquest will not be exciting enough.
I have a vision unfort. will go ignored but it still fun to think of it:
I feel a port conquest shouldnt be just boats fighting eachother, but afterwards there should be a land conquest as well, obviously this may take part in an expansion, and it will not be in the initial release. But I just cant imagine just because a few ships are sunk that the port is controlled by another country. I imagine it would make it more challenging for a port to be contested and make it more like a siege then just a regular ship battle
Ive got two choices, run, or stay and fight...And I dont see no doors...
after SOE/LA's 1-2 punch. all i can hope for is for an overall great game with
addicting depth and fun play. balancing the professions will be an issue as mentioned
earlier and that will have a substantial impact upon the game whenever it is released.
the ultimate goal for this game should be the most realistic experience possible. every
action good or bad has a consequence. a game with a sense danger and risk would be welcomed
with open arms by us hardcore gamers. and as for any of you care bear hugging griefers out
there... PICK A DIFFERENT GAME!!!!! griefers and care bears have SWG now, so let us true
gamers have a game that is challenging and rewarding. Pirates of the Burning Sea has the
potential to be a great game as long as the dev's keep it as real as possible.
Arnott Nostromo - SWG/MBH dead because of SOE's NGE
Kreeping Death - City of Villians and is canceled due to a horrid lack of depth
Padan Fain - UO/TH still going strong (old habits are hard to break)
I remember very well, playing Uncharted Waters for SNES and though looking back I can see the limits on it because of the console but the game was the ONLY game that did a render of the entire world map. I hope POTBS doesn't get locked into the carribean and I hope it goes to the far east, economy and all.
Devs seem intent on keeping this a ship based game, the toon being a totem for the ship. That works for me, I like the idea you are what your crew and ship are. It works in Eve.
Concern being they come out early and get thier original design wrong and start messing with it. Other concern, it is coming on the scene when more glamourous games like Conan are due out and may struggle for customers because of this. It may need a few months of TLC from a good company willing to ride out fad buys.
