Guild Wars 2: Origins of Madness Goes Live Today

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

ArenaNet has announced that today marks the first Guild Wars 2 Live Story update for 2014. The story arc involving Scarlet Briar will be coming to a close as 2014 rolls along and Origins begins the end, in a manner of speaking. In Origins, players will begin to unravel Scarlet's plans for Tyria.

On one front, players must journey to the mountains of Lornar’s Pass where Scarlet is massing her armies to defeat the Twisted Marionette, Scarlet’s titanic new clockwork creation. It will require a coordinated assault by an army of players to challenge both the Marionette and Scarlet’s combined forces.

The other threat lies in Bloodtide Coast, where Scarlet has awoken something ancient and dangerous. The Great Jungle Wurm is a huge beast with three ravenous heads and an arsenal of attacks at its disposal. Only a determined effort by a large group of players has a chance at defeating this menace.

Find out more on the Guild Wars 2 site.

Finally managed to participate in this event. Duh... so it is essentially 2 boss mobs with tricks. How creative... NOT.

Sorry, but this was a mindless, absurd zerg fest! And easily one of THE most boring and useless events I have EVER had the dubious honor to witness. And given the last "Living Story" events I finished the achievements gave utter TRASH I skip this one. Seen it, and that was it for me.

Sorry, but that's just total humbug. Each new "living story" is more worthless now. So we get 2 new boss mobs to zerg down. Wow... yey... I can hardly contain my excitement!

A part of me wishes it was a mindless zerg fest. I have seen the event fail twice now because people rush in once the barrier opens, then they realize the zerg is gone and they die while fighting the champions inside the mini arenas.

How someone can die against the champions just cause the zerg is gone is beyond me.

My point is we lost because there are people who can't even bring a champion down in a team of 5.

Losing cause of such incompetent players leaves a bad aftertaste in my mouth.

Hmm... you sound like you didn't even log into the game. The Wurm is ridiculously far from being a zergfest. It requires coordination, people willing to perform tasks, etc. Marionette requires five groups of at least 25 in each lane spread front and back, some working siege, some on the hammers, etc. to hold on the oncoming foes while one at a time each lane goes in and gets split into groups of 5, each tasked with taking down a champion and destroying the generator in a set period of time.

Zerg down. Please, at least try to have a hint of fact to base your trolling on. You couldn't be further from the truth.

I logged in, read the mail, popped over to the zones where the mail said emergency help was needed. Stood around with a bunch of people for an hour, nothing happened. Logged out.

Hmm... you did it wrong. With the cycle right now, the bosses are spawning every two hours, alternating. You should have checked the other zone with the other boss from where you were.

I fought both yesterday.... failed at both.... despite having more than enough people for the marionette, people couldn't understand that when you port inside you have to get behind the wasps to kill them... though my team was successful,  we were the only ones.

The worm was ...well.. we didn't even really scratch our worm... and judging from the HP of the other worms... well,  they were barely scratched by the other teams as well.  Nobody understood what to do until it was too late... everyone was running barrels to the wrong places... nobody was coordinated.... and half the people were dying just because they were trying to do direct damage to the worm with no success.

So no, its not even remotely a zerg fest on those bosses...  zergs indicate that the only thing you need to do is have a lot of people whacking away at a monster to win... the more people the better... this isn't the case in either of these situations with the new bosses... unfortunately.     I'll probably try each boss once a day until enough people know what they're doing to achieve success.  Might take a week or so for it to be common to take these bosses down.

I must have missed the in game mail explaining that. My bad. I shall port back and forth next time every few mins and only wait 45 mins instead.

    1. Ok, take two. Logged in, afk'd, made lunch, watched a movie for about 40 mins until the wurm event started. Wait 5 mins for preperations, follow a npc, kill rats, get to a large wurm. Not sure what to do next. Quest text says 'kill wurm'. Notice on map theres a barrel icon. Go there, pick up a barrel, run to the wurm. Theres an glowing arrow hovering. Stand on arrow, explode barrel, nothing happens. THeres about 40 or so champs mobs spawning, so ill let others deal with the wurm and try and protect them. Fight mobs for about 15 mins, wurm health is down 1%. Apparently elsewhere on the map people are fighting other wurms, and have gotten them down about 5%. Timer runs out, fail.

    2.?????

    3. Fun

Well, in all honesty the most fun I get out of GW2 is from the tPvP and the fractals... the world bosses are more necessity than anything else...  achievements and dragonite ore....   I'd definitely like to say I've beaten each boss at least once, but I don't understand the draw that so many people have for spending their entire days focused on these boss monsters like Teq and now this worm and the marionette.

When I joined the marionette fight,  there were guys there who had been fighting that thing all day, and had been sitting in that spot for at least an hour or longer waiting for the spawn....  same thing happens with teq...  just for a kill people wait more than an hour.. and the rewards aren't even that good.

So no, it isn't fun waiting.. it isn't even that fun fighting and failing...  and its even less fun that you can't get into a map with your friends because everyone has been AFK'ing in that zone for hours for a chance to kill a monster.

just out of curiousity -what are the rewards these bosses drop?

i hope its well worth it.

    update:

i just went to gw2 site got the info..

have a chance for a wurm-themed rifle skin, a new ring or amulet, and even special ascended armor components like the Wurmslayer’s Masque, Shoulderguard, and Warfists. Create cyphers for Scarlet’s lockboxes and unlock them for a chance at a miniature mechanized Moa, new exotic recipes,

    not impressed.

    :-/

Well, you get a chance for some mini drops.. which are pretty worthless cosmetically in my opinion,  but people collect them,  and you can usually sell them for a lot of money.

You get some new cosmetic weapon items...  which might be worth it, though I haven't seen them...  and if they are anything like the teq fight,  you might get a chance for an ascended weapon drop.. or maybe a gear drop.. who knows.. which could be worth it to some people...

Other than that,  just performing various tasks on each of these bosses will increase your achievement points...  which gets you account stat bonuses which add up... and unlocks other rewards too..

You didn't get on TS, did you? If you did you'd have likely known that you need 20 people to drop barrels on the red arrow at nearly the same time to get the wurm to eat them. When he eats them he becomes vulnerable to attack. While one group is handling the barrels others need to be killing the eggs that the wurm spawns to prevent (or at least minimize) the champion mobs from spawning, and killing the ones that do spawn. You need to be organized in those fights. You can't go in as a mindless zerg or you will fail, period.

Wait a minute... killed rats? You sure you actually went in the game? On the path you have to protect the Asura npc from mobs of veteran and champion wurms that  hatch out of the groups of eggs on the path, but there are no rats. If any npc dies in the escort phase it's game over right off the bat.

He might be talking about trash mobs... when I escorted the vigil, I ended up killing crabs and skelk...

Yep, people standing around waiting yelling in global "Timer on (x)"?  Just like it is for the champion zerg trains you see going on.

He specifically mentioned the barrels... that's the path with the eggs that spawn wurms along the way. (I haven't tried the other two yet.)

Rats is slang for random enemies. And playing a part in a script has never been fun. Dynamic should be dynamic.

Take three, did the Marinette, That was more fun, though just as confusing, and we beat it first try, so I guess 100x easier than Wurm. The text said defend barrier, then run into barrier, and kill stuff.

Also tried a different wurm event, this time I guess youre supposed to kill some mob, get infected and then go to a giant hovering arrow. Not sure whats supposed to happen after that. Eventually the 3000 champ mobs killed everyone, and no one got their wurms down more than one hit. Will try final path and then log out till next update. Grinding achievements is not my bag, baby.
