I have been playing World of Warcraft since Vanilla and have played and beat all the content but have quite in between dry spells of content. I am pretty sure I am finally done though. So im looking for my next fix, something long term that will stick. Im fine with older or newer games. I think Raiding is the number one thing in an MMO so hopefully there is something out of
Here is all the games I played and what I liked and disliked about each. probably played more just cant think of them or just insignificant.
World of Warcraft -
Loved the raiding, this is why I played this game. The end content was hard and enjoyable to play. Teaming up with players helped bring a tight nitch of players. I enjoyed that it had tons of support, addons, guides, whatever you need. Tons of playerbase to allow for whatever it is you want.
Hated the grind, after awhile it got boring leveling up new characters until you got to the new content of the expansion which was more enjoyable since it was new and interesting to play.
Lord of the Rings Online -
Loved the story, quests were fun and enjoyable to sit down and read or watch. The community was very nice and inviting. Enjoyed feeling like my character was epic, this is lost of most games, you feel a connection with your character since he has a story you go through.
Hated the small population, pretty sure im on a small server but still. Hard to get into guilds that raid. Raids were fun but because of the lack of support there are no dps charts, healing charts, anything to let your team know who is being carried and not trying.
Star Wars The Old Republic -
I Loved that your character played through his own story you felt significant, even if it didnt alter your world really. I enjoyed the PVP aspect, not much of a pvp guy but it was fun and different.
I Hated the bugs in this game. It killed this game. They didnt expect people to hit cap so quick and raids were unfinished and not set up properly with tons of bugs. No addon support made this game the same as Lord of the Rings Online.
Dungeons and Dragons Online -
Wasnt much I enjoyed about this game, I played for free years ago and it seemed like you had to buy anything to even level up, leveling up took forever and wasnt enjoyable.
Neverwinter Nights Online -
I really enjoyed that anyone could make their own dungeon to allow people to run through. Fun concept .
I hated the short ability list you were able to utilize, didnt get too far so unsure how everything was.
Rift -
I enjoyed the ability to change your class to fit your play style. I think this is really unique. I think the random events kept you on your toes.
I hated the low population, I think they fixed this by merging many of the servers but it was dead and hard to find groups.
Guild Wars 2 -
I enjoyed how changing your weapon changed how you played. I enjoyed that each class felt unique.
For some reason I just couldnt get into this game, I think its because it just felt like a grind, quests were boring and random.

Well I must admit I am in the same exact boat as you. I will say that I quit playing wow during cataclysm cause I just got sick of it but I had been playing wow since closed beta, so it had been in my forefront for awhile. Some of the games you've played, I feel the same way, especially with GW2 and Rift.
I have been searching for a new long term mmo myself and must admit that I have been very unsuccessful. The best I have come across was returning to EQ1 for a couple months/year and it was enjoyable until you got to the newer content which turned into grinding dailies and just wasn't fun. I also had quite a good stint in Age of Wushu which is a martial arts sandbox mmo which I enjoyed quiet a bit. The game kept me happy for awhile but also the progression was also time based. You have skills that you lvl up and to lvl them up you have to "Cultivate" them which basically meant that they would lvl based on their current level and a timer. There were ways to speed it up but unless you put in real world money you couldn't speed it up to much. The pvp and open world was awesome though so if you like sandbox games I would suggest giving that a try. Also the crafting systems were great, a minigame put into it but you can only get a certain amount of XP into your craft per day. Although you can do just about every all the crafts except the main ones. Still a very fun game.
Since then I have been trying everything, I still have Neverwinter and GW2 installed but not really playing them much at all. Recently I have been playing APB:Reloaded and AoC (Age of Conan:Unchained). APB still has a lot of issue but if your looking for a mmofps it's pretty good, especially once they do their game engine upgrade. Server lag and hackers are the worst thing about APB though, although I have still been able to have a lot of fun. Best when you have a guild/clan/friends to play with though.
Age of Conan I have really been enjoying so far however I must admit I have only been playing it for like 4-5 days. So I am very much in my infancy in the game. It is a themepark game like wow, quests and what not but open world dungeons from what I have seen and it feels a lot more immersive I think cause of the quests. They actually have voice actors doing the quest giver voices and you have to choose your responses to what they say. Gives it a good RPG feel to it, which I have been enjoying. Not to mention it's a "Mature" MMO, so the npc's curse and you can literally walk around with no shirt on as a female and see everything. Makes it feel more like the conan world.
Anyway, I am still on the look out myself for the ever lasting mmo that will keep me playing for years again, but haven't found one so far. These are the ones I have tried and are trying and will definitely let ya know if I find something thats really great, but I hope I at least gave you some ideas.
This year in MMO's should be interesting, so new games coming out that look pretty good so keep your eyes pealed for hopefully we all can find that diamond in the rough that will allow us to play for years on end.
Yea I agree, I was looking forward to archage most of all but after today's post about what the 1.0 patch they just implemented did, I'm not sure I will even be trying that game at this point. Who knows what the game will be like when it gets to the west, but for now ESO is my new hope for an upcoming MMO other then EQ:N.
I really can't wait for EQ:N but still unsure how it will work out, I just wanna see more of it. There is still aways to go for EQ:N from what I can tell but hoping for a late 2014 or earlier 2015 release, but thats pure speculation on my part.
Wildstar is another game thats supposed to come out sometime this year, which seems like it will be very good, but seems like another pure themepark and not sure thats what I'm looking for but thats another one to keep an eye on. It seems it could be built very well and if thats the case could be one of the next good games.
For the long term though, Camelot Unchained and Pantheon are the two I am really waiting on, return to group based mmo's FTW.
Don't waste your time on the crap that is available right now. Most of them are on life support and try to shove microtransactions down your throat just to survive until the next day.
I'd suggest going to a different genre until something *probably* less crappy like star citizen or eqn gets released.
Or, just take one of the MMOs that doesn't follow the wow model, like world of tanks, war thunder, dayz, wurm online etc.
Standard themepark raiding games have low population for a reason - most of them were designed as quick cash grabs and struggle to keep people interested beyond the 3 month mark.
Elder Scrolls Online isnt going to have raiding so thats out for me. ArcheAge essentially sounds like it is falling apart at the seems right now so thats out.
I guess my search still continues.
