I'm not much of a raider these days. Can you get decent gear through story mode? Or is the good stuff reserved for hard and nightmare? Or is there another way to get gear?

Since no one else has answered, I give it a whirl
Gear in personal story mode is generally blue items. Most of the solo stuff is green items. Green to purples will drop at random.
Blue is better, Purple is best. Best stuff though is orange with implanted purple enhancements since you never need to craft another piece of gear just the implants.
To get purple items is luck or crafting. Crafting downright sucks. Worse than EQ2 by a country mile. If you don't mind spending additional time in each zone do crafting of blue items until you get to the cap. Use your companions to run missions. Every time you get rare sell them on GTN instead of crafting them. You'll make a lot of credits that way. I made 5 to12 million credits a day at level 25 just selling purple items and rares.
Do research of you items and expand your recipies including purple gear in case you want a piece of equipment that is best or you want to get a lot of credits from others that twink their chars out. Keep your gear two levels over your current level and you'll waltz right through all solo content and even some group X2 stuff.
Problem is that the repetitive of doing this leads to extreme boredom and I folded up and left.
So can you get raid-level gear off of the market or through crafting? I guess I don't need it if I'm not raiding, but I don't want to feel like a total scrub.
I don't really want to raid much. I just want decent gear (doesn't have to be top end) to call my own. Can that be achieved without doing a lot of raiding? Or is the endgame all about raiding?

You should have gone through those comments. Anyways, i edited my post to show you the part i am talking about. It's possible although a bit hard.
And because i am an Alts guy, i haven't reached the endgame yet to tell you personally but you can ask it in the subreddit. They will help you definitely.

You will slowly but surely pick up not only a fair chunk of credits, but the items you seek as well (commendations are what your after, fleet has alot of dailies/weeklies, seek out the lvl 55 new planets as well as some of the older ones). Grindy, but isn't that what all MMO's are these days?
