MMo with a strong pet system?

HulluckHulluck Member UncommonPosts: 839

I know that I'll probably be shunned for this but I really liked and loathed Rappelz pet system. I liked it because pets were a big part of the game. The higher  a tier you got, the stronger it was. They stood out, were powerful and felt decent all around. They were essentially like toting around another player as a tank or dd or crowd controller. I loathed it because the cash shop was basically based off of it.  People could spend $200 and end up with nothing to show for it. I also believe like a lot of people that the system was abused by the company. A lot of people felt this way and most would agree that to some extent it probably was.  I haven't played in sometime so I am not  100% sure how it is now.

I liked Anarchy Online same way with it's pet classes.  Pets were so-so up until the top tier then they became big.  They stood out. They were strong. Just all around felt good and fun.

Just curious if there are any mmo's with a pet system that I might have over looked out there (for whatever reason). Free or p2p.  I'm extremely bored lately. I haven't been able to find anything to play Including single player games. I've played most of the newer titles. I usually play TBS or RTS games when I get like this. Don't even hae the urge to play any of those either.

Didn't think it had a U.S. publisher yet?

I think Aion's Spiritmaster class has a pretty strong pet. Marvel Heroes has a few characters which can be quite strong pet-wise (Squirrel Girl being the most awesome, of course), and LOTRO has the Loremaster, though I know not how good the pets are.

If you're looking for non class-specific though, there's not much. Aura Kingdom heavily advertises theirs, so that might be worth checking out. It's another F2P game though, and Aeria is... well, they're Aeria, lol.

FFXIV has a fairly cool pet system where your chocobo can become a combat pet as well as a mount, with the ability to specialize it in DPS, healing, or tanking. You can also give it barding and such to affect its abilities & stats. If you can afford to pay, it's worth checking out, though you can't access it until level 30 (not long if you're not like me and focus on leveling your combat class, hah).

About all I can think of off the top of my head.

Thanks, I'll look into those.  I'm just in one of those gaming funks.  Been that way for a few weeks now. SIngle player, MMO.  doesn't matter. Trying to (wanting to) get out of it.

Dragons Prophet is pretty much completely pet based, granting all of the pets are dragons of course. But you can ride, fly, and fight with them. It's an ok game though it couldn't keep me interested for long. You might like it though. It's F2P as well.

I hear you. As my sig shows, I've been really big into both vintage and modern dungeon crawlers lately. I want Might and Magic X like you wouldn't believe, lol.

I will add that if you check out Marvel Heroes, look at Loki, Emma Frost, and Squirrel Girl, as they're the strongest pet classes. Sadly, none of them are free though. Rocket Raccoon can get a pet and turrets, and he's still a starter hero I believe. Plus Groot is awesome.

Holy crap.. I've been kind of keeping myself in a box lately it seems. Really wasn't expecting this many options.Even if I don't end up playing any of them you all have at least given me a lot of titles to look into. Maybe it will finally help me to get out of this funk that I am in. Really appreciate it.

Vanguard's Necro has a great pet. He levels as you level, and changes appearance as he levels,. You can also rip body parts out of the things you kill, and install them into the pet. Once you get high enough, the Necro can also raise dead bodies, so you can end up with a small group just of pets.

Really good pathing and AI too.

Then there  is Swtor not really called pets but companions every class gets 5 plus there are two you can get through missions.

You know... I'll be honest. I never even thought about SWTOR.  It got such a bad rep. everywhere.   I don't have any personal opinion one way or the other about it (never did). Though because of all the controversy, I just wrote it off sometime back. Funny thing, I did the same for WAR and didn't start playing it until later on after I happened to see 60 day gtc's for like $8 ish  on Amazon.  Enjoyed it in the end for what it was even with it's issues. Low pop was annoying though. huh..

Perfect World had a nice Pet-Class, SWTOR has Companions, Ultima is probably on of the best with this class that tames Animals and Monsters, SWG dead, Vanguard had a nice Necromancer-Class as Age of Conan does, Final Fantasy 14 has also a pet class.

    Are they that strong?

Imho there is a serious lack of a really good Pet-Class in the MMO world.

Well i enjoy Swtor.  They have come a long ways since launch the population represents that.    It's got a lot of good things going for it.  As for the companions they all have unique stories to tell and your relationship with them changed depending on your actions.  They also vary in their rolls, some are dps, some are a tank and some heal just depends on what you need.

Well it's free 2 play I'd recommend spending at least $5 so you become preferred if you do try it out.

Definitely going to look at it.  I wrote off other titles because of the bad reps they or the company got. I really have.  Only reason I ended up checking WAR out awhile back was because Amazon had a bunch of 60 day GTC's stupidly cheap that I happened to see. Was looking at something else.  I honestly enjoyed the game. I griped about it's issues like the next person. It's in my post history. Though I also enjoyed the game. Huh. Thanks.

Yeah, I really miss my demon summoner. Mastermind was a great pet class.

Dragon's Prophet - Completely forgot about this, lol. Bought a founder's pack, got pissed they went into open beta months before they were supposed to (and long before the game was ready), and forgot about it. May have to check it out again myself.

I never played EQ 1 or 2 either. I don't know which ones specifically I will end up trying. Definitely going to try a few of the ones mentioned. I know that most gamers can relate  to going through the phases where nothing is appealing for whatever reason. Not my first time. Usually it doesn't last for more than a few days for me. This time it's been a lot longer. Really do appreciate the ideas.  Just got some downtime for awhile. Had to have some teeth pulled (5). Wisodoms plus one a wisdom was impacted into pretty badly. Army for whatever reason didn't pull them when I was in. Which is odd, they usually like yanking wisdom teeth out.

So I got a decent bit of downtime and some alright meds. I don't honestly need them, Shhh.  Taking them anyway. image  I don't drink or anything anymore, so it's been awhile.  Just sucks to be going through a funk while I actually have the free time.

In my opinion the Hunter class in World of Warcraft is the best pet driven class in any game I've ever played.

Play Annie from League of Legends

Get to 6 and get Tibbers

    Charge up to 3 stacks

    Cast Tibbers

Giggle like a schoolgirl as he tears the enemy a new one and stuns it at the same time.

In all seriousness though, good pet systems are few and far between.  Aion looks to have the best.

Of course, nothing compares to SWG :)

True, the "Creature Handler" was the best pet class ever. There will never be anything like that again.

My biggest thing about WoW is the "Buy in".  MoP with another new expansion about to hit.  Haven't play since Vanilla. Going to wait for the next expansion to drop and MoP to hopefully get put into the Battlechest. Would have probably picked it up during the winter sale if it wasn't for the new expansion.  Not sure how far off it is. Sounds like it's pretty close to dropping though.

Vanguard's Necromancer, one of the best.

Dark Age of Camelot too- Cabalist, Sorceror, Necromancer, Bonedancer, Hunter, theurgist, Animist (shudders) all vastly different pet systems, probably the most expansive and unique pet system in the genre.

Vanguard is shutting down, so I wouldn't bother starting it now.

I love playing pet-user classes.  ^_^  Here are some of the MMOs I've played with pets in; disclaimer, any of this information may have changed since I last played the game.

Perfect World has a pet system, but it has problems.  A huge problem is that only female characters can be Venomancers, which is the class similar to WoW's Hunters, except a mage instead of an archer.  They did add a dual-gender pet user class, but it has a much more restricted pet selection because it's like WoW's Warlock class instead.  Also, as a Venomancer you can capture most of the monsters in the game as pets, but the best tank pet is from the cash shop, and personally I think it's ugly. :/

Dofus has a summoner class, Osamodas, which is an interesting variant on a pet-user class.  You start with the ability to summon a chicken (tofu) and soon gain the ability to summon a sheep (gobbal).  At higher levels there are other summons, up to a dragon.  There are also all-class spider, skeleton, and carrot summons if you complete the quest to earn them, but they don't work like your regular summons.  The Sadida class is also sort of a summoner, but they create voodoo dolls instead.  In addition you can have ornamental pets that follow you around, and after level 60 you can have a dragoturkey mount, those are capturable and breedable, but the capturing/breeding system was really grindy and not fun.

MixMaster has an interesting merging system.  I found the combat boring though, as the pets just attack on their own.  And the pet storage harshly limited for someone like me who would prefer to collect all the different pets.

BrightShadow has shojo anime written all over it, but the pets were ok.  I didn't play it to even a medium level.

I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

The Ultima Online Tamer skill is a great build to play. You can tame certain creatures in the wild and work their skills up and make an obscene amount of money with them. On the server www.uoforever.com they have added brand new pets that werent even on the original OSI servers as well. I"d give it a look. otherwise maybe when swgemu gets finished can have fun with the creature handler profession in that one too. Everything else i've encountered in mmorpgs is pretty "tame" in comparison to these two games' pet system.

I recommend learning how to read Japanese if you are into deep pet games, yes I am being serious. Currently no plans at all for this game to be released in the west but there is nothing that will come remotely close to its pet system.
