LoTRO or EQ2?

XssivXssiv Member UncommonPosts: 359

A buddy and I who play a lot of WoW are planning to take a break from it for a bit so we're looking for another MMO to jump into for a few months.

After much debate, we've decided that an MMO with a solid community would be a refreshing change for us so we've decided that our two best options at this point would be LoTRO or EQ2.

We both played LoTRO when it launched and popped in here and there for the first couple of years.  We understand that the game has seen a lot of changes recently with mixed reviews.   We always liked the lore and community in LoTRO but did not care much for the combat.

Regarding EQ2, neither of us have ever set foot in this game but understand the basics.  We've heard good things about the community but have no way to verify.

So I figured I'd throw this out there in hopes of receiving some guidance from the fine folks who frequent the MMORPG forums.

I like both games, one is very good for RP and immersion and the other has the most content of any mmo to date IMO, EQ2 is vast when it comes to things to do. Large amount of classes and character progression, housing and pve content.

Both are FTP so why not download EQ2 and see how you get on. If you want a total or more  PVP  then download Age Of Wushu/Wulin if you are playing from Europe.

EQ2 gets my vote.  Just a word of advice: be prepared to lose about a year of your life. LOL

EQ2 was so much like WoW that I went back to WoW instead. For a break from Wow with these two choices, I'd pick LOTRO. Different enough to be a real break and has a really awesome community, especially if you choose one of the RP servers. Enjoy!

LOTRO and EQ2 are both good games

    regarding EQ2 and WOW

yes they are similar but still different enough

    - collections / shinies

    - level scaling (self mentoring) -- can revisit earlier content and still be challenged

    - housing

    - a more robust crafting system

    If we're voting....:)

My vote would be try EQ2 first. If it doesn't do it for you, then try LOTRO.  I think for lotro you really need to like following stories to get into it. I hated it ...but I always hate reading mmo story quests. Everyone I know that loves it always seems to talk about that being the reason it's so great.

Well since you already played LoTRo I would suggest trying EQ2 out.

You are not losing any money, only time and can just go to LoTRo if EQ2 doesn't float your boat. Content wise, EQ2 will provide more. Its been out longer and has had a ton of expansions/updates. Its a deep game, lots of different classes/races and places to quest in.

Give it a spin since its free to join.

I have a gold account with eq2, I play it every day.  I did have 2 lifetime accounts for lotro for me and the wife.   Its been 1 year 8 months since I last logged into lotro.

EQ2 has way more to do and the store is not as intrusive.   I lost faith in the lotro devs a long time back when they released Mirkwood,  I have not bought any of the LOTRO expac since then.

I play both casually and they both have fantastic freeby models.

I love duoing heroics with my friend in EQ2 and I prefer soloing in LOTRO. IMO EQ2 has a lot more to offer than LOTRO (especially after the extreme dumbing down of the the class roles recently in LOTRO) but it takes a lot more work to get at the marrow of EQ2 - once you do though you will be amazed at how much little hidden secret stuff there is in every nook and cranny to the extent that LOTRO will seem trivial in comparison.

Didn't turbine lose the rights to Lord of the Rings soon? I would probably play EQ2 out of those two, LOTRO is very well done but it has a lot higher of an initial investment to get all of the content, while EQ2 the only thing you would need is MAYBE a couple of things when you get pretty far in (Mercenaries, the most recent expansion).

Combat in lotro like you said isnt very good. they changed it and took out a few skills so that it is easier.EQ2 has better combat but I dont think the world is exciting. It's a loose-loose situation. You chooese between famine or plague.

Since you'll be bringing a friend to play with Id say EQ2. With the 2 of you plus your mercenaries doing group content should be a problem.

Never played WoW so I dont know if its to similar to EQ2 for you, but I'd go with EQ2 any day. Played lotro subbed for about 3months, and as a big Tolkien fan since childhood I thought this would be a game for me. I was wrong though. The combat just didnt grab me and the whole "follow the fellowship" storyline didnt do it either. Tbh the thing I enjoyed most was downloading songs that I could play ingame. Not enough to make me miss the game now that I dont play anymore.

    EQ2 all day, every day.

LOTRO is an awesome game too, though.

Don't forget to try EQ1. Mercenaries make 2 man groups a blast and let you play any class you want.

EQ2.  Antonia Bayle or Freeport server.

Both are solid games, but going from the smoothness of WoW's combat to the sluggishness of LOTRO will be noticeable.

And WoW and EQ2 are not very similar.  They are both theme parks, but really arent too similar besides the genre staples.

Both games have a heavy wowish feel.....Both are heavily quest oriented so if you are burned out on quests at all I'd pass on both.....If yo uwant more of the same that you had with WoW than both games will give you that (Rift too)......

Was thinking the same thing as above.

I'd also put my vote on LotRO, especially if "We always liked the lore and community in LoTRO but did not care much for the combat.

Lore is still there, community as well, and for the combat... well, it's still not something worth much to care about :)

  • BelgaraathBelgaraath Member UncommonPosts: 3,205
I played both, but I think the 'lore' comments edges you closer to LOTRO. They are both ok games, but I felt the story in EQ2 was much weaker and I felt more immersed in LOTRO, especially for its RPG aspect and the more mature community on the Landroval server. I think the combat was arguable a little better on EQ2, but the world/zones felt much more open in that you could pretty much run to 90% of the world without a loading screen (entering building there are quick loading screens and places like Moria). For me it was about immersion and LOTRO wins IMO. EQ2 was good though too. If you don't care about story, neither is a bad choice.

    There Is Always Hope!

EQ2 released first, so.... Wow is eq'ish, not the other way around 8)

  • ReehayReehay Member Posts: 172

I strongly advise LOTRO over EQ2.

EQ2 is an awful and clumsy WoW clone. And even worse... EQ2 is actually more shallow and plays worse than WoW.   If you want a break from WoW, than EQ2 is not for you. All you'll do in EQ2 is hire henchmen and faceroll the most boring content in the existence of MMOs. So ya, if you love soloing boring content, go for EQ2.

EQ2 without a doubt to me. Get the AOD x pac, and you 2 with mercs can conquer a lot, the wife and I do.

Nope. EQ2 released first, very different than WoW. Then WoW became huge. Then the managers of EQ2 said "nobody is playing our shitstorm game... lets atleast be a shitstorm copy of Warcraft so we get more players!!" and they bent and twisted and patched EQ2 into a WoW clone.

    true fuckin story.

Neither.  If you have not played Vanguard you should give that a try before it goes away.  There are some games all MMO players should play, and Vanguard is one of them.  If you are only planning on taking a few month break from WoW than Vanguard is a perfect break.  One of the best games to duo in too.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
