LoTRO or EQ2?

I had posed the exact same question to myself when I wanted to decide upon the two.

Both great games but I ended up playing lotro.

EQ 2 is very fantastical (not a bad thing just "it is what it is") whereas the world of lord of the rings is more "our world".

Though I loved my shadow knight (or whatever it was called) in EQ 2 I didn't like the combat animations and especially the running.

Not to say that lord of the rings is "better" (it's not) but it is different.

I suppose I never warmed up to EQ 2's world or the quests.

Out of the 2 choices I would say EQ2..I have played both and found LOTRO really stale. EQ2 has a pretty neat crafting system and tons of content. Although with that being said..If your just wanting a break from WoW for a couple of months and not serious about other mmo's I would personally go with DCUO. DCUO is really fast paced and really fun to play. Despite the fact its ran by SOE. It will be a fun ride for the short break you and your friend are wanting. Also Its a game you dont have to fully commit to to enjoy on like the 2 other titles you mentioned. Just my 2 cents though. As always have fun and good luck on you and your friends new adventure! :)

Nope. EQ2 released first, very different than WoW. Then WoW became huge. Then the managers of EQ2 said "nobody is playing our shitstorm game... lets atleast be a shitstorm copy of Warcraft so we get more players!!" and they bent and twisted and patched EQ2 into a WoW clone.

    true fuckin story.

Um nothing entirely fundamentally changed. They basically got rid of the death penalty and changed the beginning archtypes so you started as the class you wanted instead of the archtype.  True fuckin story 8)

EQ2 has tons of PVE, way more than LOTRO and has one of the best housing system imo! However, the engine is horrible. Your characters move like crap and their combat animations are even worse. It feels extremely clunky.

LOTRO is slightly better. However, character animations again are horrible. Compared to WOW, these two games run like Android 2.0 compared to iOS 7. They are just not smooth enough.

I would go for EQ2 simply because it has way more content and it has brilliant housing and dungeon crawling.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

I still can't get this "character animation" obsession of the last (almost) decade, but I can accept if it's important for some :) However, LotRO's main strength graphic-wise is the scenery (ok, and the cosmetic system too). Here's a snowy compilation from a couple days ago: http://youtu.be/P33aoWulJUY

Man, I miss Forochel... I'd love to play it through again, sadly I don't have any alts in the 40ish level range atm.

(for the record, I think even Akalabeth's character model was decent, I mean it's working for the hangman games and the crazy sticks animations just fine. Khm. /irony if it wasn't obvious :) )
