Tell us something about PVP in EQN.

It wont be an afterthought. We are going to make PvP matter in an Everquest game or were going to die trying.

I actually have two questions
The thing that excites me most about ever quest next is the creation and destruction of cities. How open to our whims will the world truly be? Will we be open to build and modify anything or can we rampage across the countryside?
The reason i ask is the thing Im most excited for in EQN is players coalescing to form towns and their own societies, and other player groups deciding for whatever reason they dont want that player group to exist in that spot, and the political intrigue and eventual mass war it would take to fully level the original city.
I really hope there are PvP servers where everyone can create or destroy any terrain or house at any time. Perhaps something you can buy to place limited protection on a thing, but it would also need a way to be undone so the war isnt stalled by one childs home.
Creation and destruction is going to be the major selling point of this game. It has the glorious potential to be a medieval Eve Online in scope and scale of the player created content.

I agree completely and fear not.. this is the focus of PVP in EQN.

Question I have: I enjoyed playing Ultima Online back in the day, and in truth it was my first online mmo experience. I sense that in alot of ways EQN may follow along a similar path with regards to player experience, skill gain, etc (please god bring in a UO animal taming type system) which the thought of makes me very excited. question for what ive said above, should i get excited for EQN

If you like UO, youre going to love EQN. A whole lot.

Now, if they only understood the lore and immersion value of knowing that they care enough about pvp to allow for factions. My elf killing your elf is sadly un-epic, no matter how many programming goodies the game has. Had Tolkien had the imagination of most developers these days, the Hobbits would have never gotten out of the Shire, because they'd have join different guilds and would fight alongside orcs as they killed other Hobbit Orc teams.
I'm not expecting the brilliance of a 3 realm mmorpg build, very few folks understand why stalemates between 2 factions are game ending. But In EQN it would be nice to have actual lore where RPG matters. SO even 2 factions would be better than random gang bangery guild vs guild.
Sony historically doesn't understand this sort of thing, however. Shame, because I love what I've seen of EQN, but if you loved Dark Age of Camelot, you'll hate this. Now, were they to announce one 2-faction server (again, 3 factions is too much to ask for), and if they don't do the WoW thing and merge the factions together nearly immediately over quest-lines (games do this to avoid actually building a real culture and geography for a faction or race), then this could be a game worth keeping an eye on for those who want depth in their pvp and RPG.
Given that it is going to be a more dynamic game (supposedly) and involve the Combine races going out to re-conquer a largely wild continent, it would be nice if it provided the structure for us to create our own player factions. Have the sides in PvP defined by who you choose to ally with, a kind of fantasy wild west, rather than forcing us into pre-defined static factions.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
in EvE even if there are factions you can still attack anyone anywhere with various levels of guard interference depending on how close you are to the capital area right?
it seems Smedley is a huge fan of EvE and it will probably be like that.
I enjoyed DAoC and the 3 realm battles, but I also loved the 2 FFA servers before they died. Player driven alliances, conflict, and politics where very exciting.
Forcing people to choose sides based on race, god, or some other factional thing is fairly limiting.
I'm not a big Elder Scrolls fan, but it sounds like ESO 3 realm thing is a bit forced and fans don't like it because it doesn't make a lot of sense with the years of game lore. They are doing it just to do it (and because some of the team made DAoC).
Even in EQ, a Dark Elf could work up faction with a KOS faction over time. EQN is supposed to be the most "open" mmo yet, so I hope players are able to make their own decisions.
We've yet to see any "current" lore, but when the races are off regrouping for their return, we have no clue what has happened. There could be inner race conflict, cross-race alliance, who knows. I could be traitor to my kind, just because I choose X shouldn't force me into anything.
I think hard coded factions, be it 2, 3, or 10 just lead to issues down the line. Usually with imbalanced sides and complaints about balance and fairness. Toss that all out the window and let players run the show.
Sounds good
PvP always feels like an afterthought in MMO's. Even in supposedly PvP centric MMO's the PvP systems are underdeveloped and, well, bad.
