MY view of EVE, 12 days after.(Long)

SramotaSramota Member Posts: 756

Now I made a trial account the day after RMR released.. Lucky me, eh?

Anyways, I have been trying EVE before from time to time.

At first it seemed ok, the next time I couldn't stand it.
Now, a year later, I got my retail account..

As said many, many, many times before, EVE isn't for everyone.
The community literaly consume all your joy if you aren't like them.
Thing is, I realized what that meant this week..
Being fitting for EVE is about being mature, generous, and able to stand for yourself.

Noone won't ever get away with OMGWTFBBQIPWNj00 talk in EVE, ever.
Neither wil lyou get away with yelling at people and losing your temper, because it WILL get back on you.

So, to me, being able to get into EVE and the peple, is all about maturity.
Just look at how the chats are..

WoW Barrens... "UOMGUSUXIKEELj00!" and different types of desert wanking and whatnot..

EVE newbie chat - How would perception change at different speeds around and over the speed of light.
Can ferrets learn to use machinery (Smart bastards btw)
and Is there actually a random factor in the RL universe?

See the difference?

---

So onto the gameplay.

EVE won't pamper you. Ever.
I compare to WoW as this was the most recent game and also the most popular...

In EVE it's you, your ship and the universe - go live your dream.

In WoW you do missions, instances, and missions.. (And BG)

Can't really say that it was easy to get into all this freedom..
It took me more than a year, but once you let go from the "Oh dear questgiver, what now?"
you will feel the rush of making your own choices.

---

Being in-game is such a blast,
everything is beautiful and HUGE, (though I'm still convinced that it's all fake)
and let's not go into the size of ships... From the size of the Eiffel tower to the, I don't know, 100 times that size? More?

Compared to the titans my ship is dirt. literaly.

The feeling is just mindblowing when you first see the bigger ships (No titan yet aand I'm happy about that for now)

---

Everyone knows that the traveltime is hell in EVE - however, I don't.
Traveling has given me so much time..

In WoW I had to babysit my char 24/7 to be sure I wasn't killed and stuff

Now in EVE I actually have time to do stuff.
I eat regularly now and I have time to plan my moves, I can care for my RL a bit now.

---

As for leveling.. Nothing beats EVE.
Not having ot, or even be able to, grind, takes away the hardcore gamers and gives everyone a fair chance.
Also, I don't have to play all the time every day. My leveling minds itself. My girlfriend thanks God for EVE every day now, which is quite nice.
With that said, skills aren't everything.
Tactics and planning ahead is.

In WoW i had to get to 60 asap to even be valid in PvP - also I had to grind the effing instances endlessly..

No more! ot in EVE!!

---

As for controlls, I agree that it's kinda bad tat you can't controll your ship.
Then again I ask myself, do I want to?

MMOs have lag, always had, always will.
Sure WoW fakes the non-lag quite good, but it's there, it always is.

EVE took that issue away with the controlls,
EVE can fit 100-400 ships against eachother and still be playable..
WoW can't.

---

What have I forgotten.. I don't know anything about crafting as I didn't bother, just not my cup of tea.

Graphics, stunning, faked, but stunning, just like all other games.
Not plastic or cartoonish tho, more, real.. Which IS my cup of tea..

That'll be all for now, questions allowed, ask away

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.

Ok, I have some questions since I am a new EVE player (I don't think I'm finished with the tutorial yet.. but it's a long tutorial isn't it!)

    - Is PvP required? How is the ganking/griefing aspect of the game?

    - For new players... is there a chance of building up your resources etc, or will you always be beaten down by more established players? What I mean is, for someone just starting out, do you have a big chance to become powerful or to have fun, or is all the "good stuff" taken?

    - Corporations... do new players need them? How do you find them? Do you WANT to be part of one?

    - What is the goal of the game? WoW's goal is levelling for example. Is EVE a PvP/RP/Level/Resources game?

    - A lot of people see EVE and find out you can't get out of your ship then they stop playing it. Do you think it hampers the game if you can't leave the ship? What's the point of making a character if you never leave your ship?

    - How does the setting affect the players? Do people care about their character's races if they aren't more than a resource-collecting ship?

    - Are there any events in the game? Wars, astronomical events, etc.

    - What is exploration like? Is it even possible or do you just point and click to travel to established mines and wait until you collect enough ore and then go to a refinery, rinse, repeat?

    - What steps should a brand new player take to get to know the game better?

    -Niksa

    Looking for a real game.

--- PvP is NOT required, as of fighting that is. You never have to go into low space,
however, with great risk comes great rewards.

--- Space is big, I mean, really big, infact it's huge. There's always room if you look for it.

--- Corporations are not in any way needed. A friend of mine is jumping between corporations selling his wares and make great money that way. You never have to. Your style is how you will play.

--- Not leaving the ship, sure it's kinda sucky that you can't go into bars and stuff.
But then again, there are ships bigger than planets, what could you ever do outside the ship that can have any impact on a thing like that anyways? ... Kinda like why a sailor should leave his boat if people come trade with him on the sea.. Why would he?

--- In EVE, everything is politics. And for some reason people tend to care for that RP part quite a bit. Sure it doesn't make much of a difference where you are from if you're not at war. But when the shit hits the fan (Read: Soon(TM)) I believe the races will make a difference, as it is now, the players know where they come from but also are allowed to set their own future.

--- I'm not aware of events actually, but there are said to be alot of them here and there.

--- In difference of popular belief, exploration is actually possible, there's alot of space, and alot of unseen places. However most players tend to stick to their waypoints as it makes it a whole lot easier (and takes ALOT less time :P)

--- A brand new player should visit the forums of EVE first of all, and second, never be afraid to ask any questions they have in the corporation or newbie help channel. The EVE players are always very friendly if you are friendly to them

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...

    - Is PvP required? How is the ganking/griefing aspect of the game?
Schneppi: No. PvP is NO MUST. Stay within 0.6 to 1.0 Systems and always inspect Escrows before you claim them. So you wont be killed and so you cant be faked with a trade.
    - For new players... is there a chance of building up your resources etc, or will you always be beaten down by more established players? What I mean is, for someone just starting out, do you have a big chance to become powerful or to have fun, or is all the "good stuff" taken?
Schneppi: Everybody has the chance to be powerfull in EVE. It depends on your Character Skills and your Tactical Abillitys. If you collect enough resources you will be able to get all the "good stuff" you may dream of, because there is nothing which is absolutelly unique. Often "stuff" is "rare" but ayou will find always someone who sells this "stuff" in Escrow.
    - Corporations... do new players need them? How do you find them? Do you WANT to be part of one?
Schneppi: Hard to answer. It depends on your gaming style i would say. If you are in search of action and PvP a Crop. may be of good use because they can escort you and counsel you when you want to Fit your Ship for PvP. If you are more the Trader, Producer, Missioner, ... a Corp. seems to be less important. But it is always good to have friends in Space which can tell you Market Prices of different Regions for example.
For New Players i would say "Yes, you should Join a Corp." because they will help you to get into the Game and they will Guide you on your first Steps.
You can find them on the EVE-Online.Com Website in the Forum, in Corporation Chat Channels InGame and on each Station under Offices.
    - What is the goal of the game? WoW's goal is levelling for example. Is EVE a PvP/RP/Level/Resources game?
Schneppi: There is no particular goal in EVE. You can be anything you like. Do whatever you want.
Make your own goals. Become Famous, become rich, become a feared Pirate, become the Leader of a Megacorp or even an Alliance, become a Highly Specialized Asteriod Miner, Adventurer, Hunter, Pk or PKK, and so on...
    - A lot of people see EVE and find out you can't get out of your ship then they stop playing it. Do you think it hampers the game if you can't leave the ship? What's the point of making a character if you never leave your ship?
Schneppi: You can get out of your ship. You can board other ships. You can have as many ships as you like (or as you can afford) in as many Systems as you like. You cant walk on a Station or on a Planet, but why would you want to ? There's really no need to "walk around".
    - How does the setting affect the players? Do people care about their character's races if they aren't more than a resource-collecting ship?
Schneppi: Every Race has it's own Backdround Story in EVE. And every Race has different Starting Skill Levels. The Roleplaying Part in EVE is a very important Part of the Game and from this perspective, the Race you choose is also very important.
    - Are there any events in the game? Wars, astronomical events, etc.
Schneppi: Yes. The Political World changes permanently. Espionage and Competitions are always ongoing. Yesterday f.e. we had an Alliance PvP Competition, Last Weekend we had the EVE BIG Lottery, and on the www.eve-online.comHomepage you will faind many more Events.
    - What is exploration like? Is it even possible or do you just point and click to travel to established mines and wait until you collect enough ore and then go to a refinery, rinse, repeat?
Schneppi: You can explore the 0.0 Space f.e.. There are many constellations, complexes, Agents, Artifacts, Missions, and so on.
BTW: Mining in 0.0 Space is also very exiting because of the Strong NPC Ships and the PvP Pirates. image
    - What steps should a brand new player take to get to know the game better?
Schneppi: Follow the Tutorial (complete!) and fly some Missions for your Agents. Go into the InGame Chat Channels in your Language and enter the "Help" Channel.

    Fly Safe!

    i really don't get it.

why do people say that in WoW every single conversation is "wtfbbqpwn!" and then say eve is all about mature conversation?

i swear you people don't actually play any of these games. i've seen both types of conversation in both games.

    just stop it already, ok?

I've played WoW since second US beta push and all the way until last week. Trust me, I've seen the place over and over.

Also, I've seen the leetkids come to EVE, and leaving just as fast because people just laugh at them

It's pure facts and everyone knows it (Except for, like, you.)

The Barrens chat is known for serving the biggest bunch of tards through MMO history so..

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...

    Good post

I dissagree on the 400 ships thing though :) That would be nasty lag :) Nice post though.

However, I have met a fair number of pretty immature people who play EVE. I'd say the maturity of EVE players is a bit higher than in other games... but even EVE has it's fair share of jacktards.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.
    Sig image Pending
    Still in: A couple Betas

But remember all of these jacktards have to turn up and show how 'kewl' thier '1337' speech is, even though they get told to go away. They will always be there and they will always get in the way. That's why I have learnt to ignore anyone who uses '1337' or numbers inplace of letters in any chat.

Got to love the block feature of EVE chat client, thing-a-ma-jig. This feature helps with both the ignorant, childish, '1337' speech and the overly annoying beggers...

Though so I don't appear as a hypocrite because I use i3 to form the B in my name, it is because 95% of the time i have created an account to forget the password and having to make a new one.

Good review for a 12 day old player. Unfortunately 100-400 player battles arent possible at all anymore due to the insane lag, probably because of the increased player base. Hopefully this will be fixed with the server upgrades (which do sound promising).

I'm not sure what you mean by the faked stunning graphics though. Ofcourse its all fake, its a game.

Well.. .DUH ;) It'll be great.

What I mean with fake is that it's not 'true' rendering all the time but alot of cheating...
This is easily seen by the fact that you hardly need a GFX card due to the fact that most of the rendering is done through the CPU.. Genius design, and so much cheating for the puritans ;)
