I have never pre ordered a game before so not sure how this works. Do you download the game when you purchase it or do they send you a e-mail on the head start date. I would like to buy the download vision.
You buy the Game, from the Retailer of your choice. After that you will get an Email with the Headstart Key (PreOrderKey) which you have to apply at your Account. You will get an Information Mail (normally) as soon as the Client is available. At the Release Time, you will get the Key for the Full Version of the Key, which you have to apply also on the Accountpage.
You purchase the product early, at the price listed. You receive the product at launch (or pre-release)
In doing so you get a code to be entered within Zenimax's account page (or they usually flag the account if purchasing directly from the game's parent companies).
If you purchase from a bricks and mortar store they will often ask a deposit you will lose if you choose to cancel before the release date.
If you purchase digitally you may have stipulations regarding refunds if you later change your mind, generally making it a pain in the backside, if not impossible, to get a refund.
As said though early access can be hampered by server outages, if their severity is bad enough. Though early access is treated as a bonus of pre-ordering and if, due to issues with servers / internet, you cannot play during that time it is unlikely you will recieve or should expect any compensation.
