HaHa.. I never even considered.. questioning the premise of this thread... I would like to know as well.. cause if it isn't necessary.. I might purchase another copy as well.

I had a conversation with Customer Support this morning, so yes it is confirmed by the company.
Requiring two separate purchases, per platform, makes sense because the clients are different. It's like FFXIV or XI in that way. I had to purchase a separate copy of XIV for PS3, even though I already own the PC version, for the same reason.. two platforms, two different clients.
However, there's no reason they have to require a person to pay two subscriptions. Accounts do not have to be separated by platform. They can be linked together. SE does this with XIV; you can link your PS3 account to your PC account so they're both covered under a single account/subscription.
Frankly, I don't know what rationale Zeni has to do something like that, aside from "because they can". It's not very customer-friendly, to be sure.
ARR has console players and pc players on the same servers... ESO doesn't. It's an important distinction.
I consider it an important design flaw for an attempted "Next Gen" title. Maybe some of us have family/friends that cant afford a gaming rig, but can afford a console. I play ARR with my daughter, who is stationed in the Middle East. Military pay isnt going to make her rich, and she is much more comfortable on a console. ARR allows us to run together. Me on my Game rid and she on the PS3. There is a lot to be said for allowing customers freedom of choice when the line between console and rig has been so blurred.
Game rig FanBois are usually only in that camp because they do not understand the hardware within is essentially the same. Today the only distinction is whether you prefer a controller to a KB/mouse.
First thing first. ARR doesn't have PS4 version yet. Its Beta testing will start on February 22, 2014. So you can talk only about PS3 version, which is kind of different game at all.
Secondly, if you would try to read recent Q/A for console players before you let your fantasies run wild, you would know that separate servers for pc and console players is kind of a good thing (according to DEVs). It helps with disadvantages console players might be experiencing playing on the same servers (https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4850/kw/playstation account).

I own both the PS3 and the PC version of ARR, and th ecompany will have the PS4 version for free by end of year. I play on both PS3 and PC. I think I have a handle on that model.
Separating them is a good thing. Of course the dev's are saying that, they are selling snake oil. I hear they also have a bridge for sale. Sorry, my bad, company resources never sell marketing fluff...
Obama Care is the best thing for us. Our economy is doing great. We can all sit and play video games while eating burgers and fries and lose weight by simply taking a secret pill. I can send you a link to the site that sells it.

The same customer support that both confirmed you can get the imperial race through in game actions and that you can't get it through in game actions, the ones that also confirmed you could unlock the race restrictions after launch and that you can't? Those CS sure are reliable aren't they? /sarcasm
Sorry if I don't take the word of the people that haven't done anything but spread confusion and misinformation for the past 3 days, I will wait for an actual confirmation by people that actually know what they are talking about, I used to work as CS and they really don't have much more info than we do.

Only in terms of having to buy separate clients for PC and console.
There is no logistical reason they can't have a single account for a customer, with multiple registration codes, designated by platform.
Zeni is doing this "because they can", not because they have to. It's an "easy" way to get additional sub fees out of people, and they know it. And again, it's not very customer friendly.

I'll drink to that. In fact I believe I actually will.

I almost agreed.. until i realized that You can't play a single character on both versions... so effectively you would have two accounts... Has any sub game ever let a person pay 1 sub fee for more than 1 account?

No but one sub fee allows you to play on any and all servers of a game. Hence its no different than playing on a different server on the same account.
No need to insult people, especially when one doesn't have to be a "fan boy" to see that other companies have games on multiple platforms and you still require you to purchase each platform separately.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Meh, technically its a separate game. Both by having their own UPC and the fact that theyre going to be in separate servers. Im actually angrier at FFARR for double dipping. They have no excuse to charging for both versions of the same game seeing as how its the exact same account. I got it for PC and didnt bother with PS3 version until it was (A) confirmed that it'd transfer to PS4 license for free, and (B) it was dirt cheap, $10 for PS+ members. You dont see other MMO's try to double dip between PC and Mac versions do you?
ESO, however, has separate servers for each version. You'll probably even need 2 accounts to play in each. An even bigger mistake, IMO, but it does make the whole "charging twice" thing seem like less of an F-U.
Who cares if you can't play it on a crappy consol? Why do you have 2 game machines anyway?
The game can be still good if you can't play cross platform.
Sorry but what OP says is a valid point. For me I have a PC which I would like to play on as my primary, but when when my other half is other she does monopolize the computer so I typically play on the PS4. So for me, I would be happy to buy both a PC and a PS4 copy of ESO but I would not want to pay for two subs for two different accounts. I would rather have the one sub and play from multiple platforms much like how Final Fantasy 14 works.
This, in my opinion is a missed sale for them, instead of being exclusive they should try and be as inclusive as possible. So for now, yes i'll be getting ESO and ill play it just on my PC and i'll keep Final Fantasy 14 as my main MMO just because it suits my needs better and I enjoy that game.
I was very interested in this title, I have played everything associated with the universe, but now opting out. I chatted with customer support and found a key bit of info that has a bad smell to it. I have both a gaming rig and a PS4, I figured it would be nice to chose where I played. The following turns me off:
Must purchase both boxes, really? The box sale is a license purchase, digital download was a game changer.
Must pay two subscriptions, great plan, for them.
Cant cross platform, next gen? Final Fantasy Reborn allows me to play on both PS3 and PC on the same subscription.

to do that it would have to utilize cross platform servers, just to cater to a few people that want to play the same account on multiple platforms?
sure it would be nice if it was like that but i don't know how difficult that would be to do and i don't think its really necessary.

what cross-platform servers? wtf for? all it takes is to have one single database for logins with fields for username, password, access to PC version, access to PS4 version. The End. There is nothing mysterious or complicated about this.
time to wake up, its 2014 and hello, other games manage to do cross platform very well, try FF XIV;ARR which is cross platform and a very successful game, and with it being such a simple thing there is no reason why ESO should not be cross platform, its not FPS after all. While it might not be enough of a reason not to buy the game, it is however a very valid complaint.

Get it on PS4. See you in-game.
Who in their right might would be foolish enough to think if they buy the PC version they get the PS4 version for free, or vise versa.
This is really a non brainer. They are two completely different licensing platforms. Yes two Accounts and yes TWO subscriptions.
Most PC players will be foolish enough to think that. They are buying a program and subscribing to game. Why should the hardware running it matter?
Coming on internet forums to tell strangers you're not going to play a game, that you will probably end up playing anyway.
Priceless.

Aw well I'm gonna cancel my pre-order then, if you're not playing there is literally no point in anyone playing.
