Star Wars: The Old Republic: Producer's 2014 Roadmap Published

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Star Wars: The Old Republic Producer Bruce Maclean has published the 2014 Roadmap on the official site to lay out how the game will be progressing throughout the next few months. Included is the news that the free digital expansion, Galactic Starfighter, will launch for all players on Tuesday, February 4th and that players can expect another significant update in April.

There’s a lot of stuff being worked on! The team that brought you 2013 is still here and working hard to bring you another action packed year. As I write this we are actively developing all of the above as well as PvP Seasons, new Flashpoints, new Operations, new gear, performance improvements, and changes coming to Classes. Expect to see two digital expansions in 2014 just like you did last year, with one similar to Galactic Starfighter in scope and one more closely resembling Rise of the Hutt Cartel. We reserve the right to adjust our plans based on bad reasons like Snow Days in Austin(!) or good reasons like your feedback, but our current plan is to deliver all of the above to you in 2014.

Lastly, Maclean reveals that the minor update schedule, originally slated for every two weeks, will be shifted to every three weeks to give the team more time for testing procedures prior to release.

You can read the entire letter on the Star Wars: The Old Republic site.

Seems like really good additions for a F2P game.

However, if you're a paid subscriber to TOR... I don't think you're getting your money's worth.

The outline shows their intentions for a 6 month period. (February - July)...

I think FFXIV is getting 2-3x the amount of content in the same amount of time.  Patch 2.2 in March and Patch 2.3 in July.  By that time, FFXIV will have added 6 dungeons, 4 primals, a new 4 boss raid (turns 6-9) and a new 24 person raid (CT+).

    My 2 cents.

    "
    • June 10th: Game Update 2.8
      • Nightmare Mode Dread Palace Operation
      • New ships and an entirely new Ship Role for Galactic Starfighter
      • And much more… this is going to be the biggest update up to this point - we will reveal more once we are a bit closer to June"
I'm very curious what they mean by that last line there.

Also very happy to see 3 new flashpoints being added in the next few months.

I think they have a very different sense of time at Bioware if they think they hit their eight week goals. I will say that the game has improved over the course of the last year though. I kind of laugh at releasing the Nightmare versions of the dungeons so far apart when they were released together initially. Seems like a lack of being able to build new content. I mini flying game isn't going to keep your raiding player base happy, and a lack of new blood and resubscribing players is making queueing for flashpoints and pvp irrelevant. Whats going to happen when ESO and Wildstar come out this spring if you don't have something ready to combat that besides a nightmare version of an already released raid your going to fail. Changing a few mechanics and uping the bosses HP isn't going to keep players around forever.

Wow so they added actual space combat now? Did they do away with the starfox knockoff?

They did hit their 8 week goal last year. Just go look at the patches page. The 8 weeks are for new content not NiMs only. I was very happy with the content they released last year in every patch. Imo, it was even better than GW2 because they released permanent new planets/areas, FPs and a complete new game mode (GSF) along with several seasonal events.

I commend any developer that can lay out a prolonged plan,it tells me there is some thought and trust put into the game. They did fall short in only planning ahead to June but hey it is a better start than MOST developers, without naming developers.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

    I am excited about:

"Expect to see two digital expansions in 2014 just like you did last year, with one similar to Galactic Starfighter in scope and one more closely resembling Rise of the Hutt Cartel."

I can't wait for more details.

    Edit:

One similar to Galactic Starfighter: Podracing????

One resembling Rise of the Hutt Cartel.... Two new Flashpoints on Tython and Korriban where the Empire and Republic confront each other directly, initiating a new storyline that will span updates across the entire year until its galaxy-shaking finale - I guess this shaking finale will be the new expansion!!!!

    Agree.

I was an early adopter and quit about 6 months in due to various reasons (my post history is clear on my disapointment with the game), but since I stopped raiding in wow, i went back to SWTOR a few months ago to see whats up. Like you said, I can't stop playing. The dungeons are challening, require you to do mechanincs or you wipe, CC mobs, and have boss enrage timers. The PVP isn't a huge CC fest like wow, macros haven't completely taken over gameplay/pvp like Rift. I am honeslty quite suprised by the 180 the game has taken in the last year.

From a game that launched without a /roll command, to seeing what is has become today, its almost as if they put more development work into 2013 than they did pre launch.

Very curious where it will go. I was fully expecting to try it out for a bit, then leave after i got bored, but I have been subbed since Aug with no end in sight.

This game didn't live up to the expectations for many people, including myself.  I enjoyed my six months playing it, but I do know that many people labelled it an outright failure.  I can appreciate that view.  But props to Bioware, and (gasp) even EA for not throwing in the towel.  They've worked to improve the game quite a bit since release and are continuing to put love into it.  May not be the improvements everyone wants, and it still will not be enough for most people, but I am pleased that Bioware has stuck with it and is busting their tail to continue adding content for the people who enjoy the game.

Good work, Bioware.  You may not be experts at developing a proper MMO, but it isn't because of lack of effort.

Yeah, it's good times now. Early players like myself are finally forgetting their ridiculously high expectations and can now enjoy the game we actually got.

I'll keep subscribing and never use the cartel market, hopefully that'll encourage them to make real content.

Great to see new content on the schedule for SWTOR but I would also like to see updates that focus on fixing current issues that have gone unresolved.

Funny thing is, I was going to subscribe to this game, but they do such an amazing job of screwing non-subscribers that I couldn't get any form of online help to explain why their website didn't want to take my money.

or it could possibly be pve side of things for GSF.  wouldnt that be a neat way to have a big end to the next chapter. some kind of space battle like the end of IV.  like a space FP or OP

I can only imagine it would lay the ground work for the eventual fall of the sith, they already hinted to the empire being in disarray in RotHC. I am also sure they are gonna add some connections to the upcoming films.

I haven't been this curious about the game since before it launched.

The game looks healthy for something that people called "dead" when it went F2P last year.

I'm loving this game again. It's improved so much. I think it has a chance to really take off again, especially when the new movie comes out next year.

When the game went F2P tbh i thought that was it, but they actually managed to turn things around, and the game is fun to play, its not my main game and i only play a couple of times a week at most, but it is fun, and despite everything im still subscribed to the game. And no matter what time it is when i log in (shift worker!) there are always people around, that seems to be pretty healthy to me! image

Indeed. I actually played SWTOR for a couple months last year, and it's not that bad (i didn't play the P2P version). For someone who have tried  most mediocre & shitty F2P mmorpgs out there, I can say that SWTOR is definitely not a failure.

Yeah same here, was very POed when the game came out, maxed level and quit, came back in sept and still subbed

I do find it very hard to find anything fun to do after you have capped on your weekly commendations, there is just no point in playing after that.

The macrobinocular/seeker droid quest were really enjoyable.

I so wish this game would have been a sandbox with an open world to explore, sensible crafting and real space simulation.

Sorry, that space part doesnt work for someone who grew up with X-Wing, Tie.fighter and SWGs space combat system.

Im still a subscriber, but find less and less to do.
